Especially since it is a Beatles-related book. The first serious, music related book I read back in the ‘70s was Hunter Davies ‘official’ biography of the Beatles. For me it set the standard for all rock books that followed. Now, as I voraciously devour rock-related books, my garage and attic is filled with the overflow of read books. When I was first asked to review “The Quarrymen” by Hunter Davies I was skeptical. I thought the best account of this time period of the group that became the Beatles came out in 1983, “John Lennon-In My Life” by Pete Shotton and Nicholas Shaffner. What more could be said about the subject? Well, “The Quarrymen” was entertaining after all. It was great to get impressions from ALL the ex-members of the Quarry Men during the various times covered in the book. There are even a few contradictions of the standard Beatles myth. The beginnings of the group is covered, what the members did during the Beatle-years and finally the groups unexpected reunion and tour! I was a little put off by two (what I would call) “errors” in this book. Davies insists on spelling the groups name “Quarrymen” throughout the book. This despite the spelling “Quarry Men” on the band’s business cards (as well as their old painted drumhead)! And in the very first sentence of the book, Davis quotes the oft-retold legend of how John was born during a bombing raid in Liverpool. This has since been disproved.

Hunter Davies, The Quarrymen (Omnibus, 2001) I've been a Beatles fan from just about the beginning. I started collecting their albums at age 9 in early 1964, just after they first hit America. I'll forever regret that I didn't see their Ed Sullivan Show appearances. My parents didn't have anything against the Beatles, but they loathed Mr. Sullivan. In addition to buying their records, I also started reading books and magazine articles about the Beatles early on, although I didn't start collecting some of the major Beatles books until the 1990s, when my pocketbook finally allowed such extravagance. So I suppose I am a minor example of what Hunter Davies in The Quarrymen refers to as "Beatle Heads," those people around the world who know vast amounts of Beatles trivia. I knew long ago that their first band was called the Quarrymen, and that they also went through other incarnations such as Johnny and the Moondogs and the Silver Beatles, and had other members like Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Thus it was with keen anticipation that I approached this book by Davies, who wrote the Beatles' 1968 authorized biography. Perhaps my expectations were too high, because I found

The Beatles by Hunter Davies Second Revised Edition This biography about the Beatles by Hunter Davies is the only authorized biography about the group. The book was originally written in 1968, two years before the group officially disbanded. The strength in this book lies with the fact that Davies spent eighteen months with the group, observing them firsthand as well as interviewing all four members. Davies also spent time with others close to the group, such as George Martin, Neil Aspinall, Mal Evans, as well as friends and family members. Overall, Davies did well in researching for the book, but at times he relies too much on word-of-mouth. For example, many of the dates and details from early in the Beatles’ career are inaccurate, including the day that John and Paul met, and the time that George joined the group. One would think that word-of-mouth would have been good enough...after all, who would know the Beatles’ history better than the Beatles themselves? However, it is possible for one’s memory to have fallacies, and the Beatles were no exception. Many years later Mark Lewisohn would research these early dates in depth, pinpointing the exact day of the Woolton Village fete to July 6th, 1957, not June 15th, 1956 as Davies reports. However, despite a few inaccuracies, the laid-back approach to telling the Beatles’ story as opposed to the scholarly approach that others take makes this much more enjoyable than the typical biography of the group. The more recent bits of the story, from 1967-68 when Davies was writing it, make the reader feel right there in the room, listening to the conversations and observing what takes place. Especially enjoyable is the chapter entitled, “The Beatles and Their Music,” in which one gets a slice of what it was like to watch John and Paul write their songs.
