Face to Face
With Ray Davies
BY JOHN C. FALSTAFF Ray Davies. [Photograph: Kevin Reynolds] T he British pop explosion of the 1960s was driven by startlingly innovative people; pre-eminent among them were Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Pete Townshend and the Kinks' Raymond Douglas Davies . But while the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Who have always enjoyed a very high commercial profile, whether they still exist as entities or not, the Kinks have not sustained the stadium-filling status, which they briefly attained in the U.S. circa 1980, a full decade after their heyday. Perhaps surprisingly, the Kinks have yet to be honored by a boxset, but at least all of their early releases are finally out on CD, and Ray Davies still records and tours regularly, with and without the Kinks. This Sunday, May 17, he returns to the Variety Playhouse with his one-man, autobiographical show The Storyteller , promoting his just-released 74-minute album of the same name.

Bomar (returned POWs) REMARKS: 730218 RELEASED BY DRV SYNOPSIS: In order to protect American aircraft from increasingly sophisticated enemy radar controlled anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) guns and surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites, the Air Force deployed EB-66 aircraft to Vietnam. The Douglas EB-66C, Destroyer, was an unarmed, twin-engine jet with a crew of six: pilot, navigator, and four electronic warfare officers (EWOs). The EB-66C was an electronic intelligence (ELINT) platform and the crew's mission was to locate the North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile and antiaircraft artillery sites by monitoring the electronic emissions of the NVA's "Fan Song" and "Fire Can" radars. The EB-66E was an electronic countermeasures (ECM) platform with a crew of three (pilot, navigator and electronic warfare officer), whose mission was to jam the NVA's radar emissions to degrade the enemy anti-aircraft capabilities and help keep American air losses low. On 4 February 1967, Capt. John Fer, pilot; Major Jack W. Bomar, navigator; and electronic warfare officers (EWOs) Capt. Russell A. Poor, 1st Lt. John O. Davies, Capt. Herb Doby, and Major Woodrow H. Wilburn; comprised the crew of an EB-66C aircraft (serial #55-0387), call sign "Harpoon 01." The Destroyer departed Takhli Royal Thai Airbase at 1324 hours as the lead aircraft in a flight of two to conduct an active/passive electronic counter-measures mission in support of a strike against the Thai Nguyen Army Depot, which was located 32 miles northwest of the town of Thai Nguyen. The #2 aircraft in the flight, call sign "Harpoon 22," was also an EB-66C. Harpoon flight's fighter escort consisted of two F-4 Phantom II aircraft, call signs "Sword 01" and "Sword 02."

Presented by Sylvain Cazalet AVIES, JOHN In 1868, Dr. Davies took a trip to Europe, not on pleasure but on profit bent. He became a constant attendant at the "École de Médecine," and the "Hôtel Dieu," in Paris ; walked the hospitals of London, Edinburgh, and Heidelberg ; visited all the larger cities of Belgium, France, and Germany, and for some period daily attended the clinics and dispensaries in each. After having spent a year in the pursuit of his professional studies, and stored up a great amount of valuable knowledge, he returned to and resumed practice in Chicago. Dr. Davies was the first to start into life the Hahnemann Medical College of Chicago, and opened the first public free dispensary for the poor in that city, devoting himself therein more especially to the diseases of women and children. His clinic was largely attended. During the war, Dr. Davies was deputed to accompany Dr. Patton, the President of the Sanitary Commission, to Richmond, for the purpose of inspecting the hospitals at City Point, and rendering what aid was necessary. His able and exhaustive report was published in the

    JOHN DONNE
Writers and their Work, New Series Northcote House (in association with the British Council), Plymouth 1994 ... highly readable and rewardingly provocative.
This study covers the full range of Donne's poetry, from the early Satires and Elegies to the Songs and Sonets and Divine Poems, and includes analysis of parts of his memorable Sermons. Stevie Davies challenges the traditional assumptions relating biography with the author's work, emphasising the Renaissance scepticism which brought all belief, including the 'self', into doubt. However, her close, sensitive readings of individual poems allow for personal reactions to their profound emotion, whilst her exploration of the cultural, religious, and political circumstances which conditioned the poet's mind give bearings for study of his turbulent, brilliant intelligence. Dr Davies challenges the tradition of male criticism which congratulates Donne on the 'virility' of his writing: she exposes his misogyny and the emotional conflict and vulnerability to which it attaches. The reader will find here a powerfully written and accessible introduction to Donne's work.

    http://www.steviedavies.com/sd_nf_donne_review1.html
JOHN DONNE Criticism of John Donne has traditionally been male territory. Of the eighteen studies of the poet recommended by Stevie Davies in her bibliography, all are by men. Donne boasted of 'the masculine persuasive force' of his verse, and after his death he was commended in Thomas Carew's 'Elegy' for his 'line of masculine expression'. Among recent critics, John Carey celebrated Donne for his triumphant masculinity in his influential book John Donne: Life, Mind and Art . Stevie Davies marches onto this field like an Amazon determined to put the cohorts of Donne's male supporters to flight. She reminds the reader, particularly the male reader, what it is like to be a woman experiencing the aggressive thrust of Donne's poetry. From place after place in the so-called love poems she picks out examples of Donne's contempt for women, his cynical exploitation of their bodies and disregard of their minds, and his coarse delight in their weakness. He dehumanizes the mistress-figures:
'She becomes an edible commodity; usable goods which, when sampled, are rendered worthless; game to be flushed out and killed; a mindless piece of flesh without individuality, whose feelings are expressly not to be taken into account'.
