INTERVIEW WITH ROBERTSON DAVIES
by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
TORONTO
9 JUNE 1992
Every time I passed through Toronto, I seemed fated to miss Robertson Davies whose commitments continue to keep him busy, even in so-called retirement. Finally, I gave up trying to fit him into my travel plans and asked for a time of his choosing. Thus came about our meeting on a fine June morning. I was shown to his office in Massey College of the University of Toronto, where he is a Professor Emeritus as well as one of Canada's foremost novelists, and he talked most genially about his Cornish trilogy.
There are no signs of Arthurian influence in the first novel, but references start to appear in What's Bred in the Bone (Toronto: Macmillan; New York: Viking Penguin, 1985), and the characters of The Lyre of Orpheus (Toronto: Macmillan; New York: Viking Penguin; Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1988) find themselves engaged, not only in mounting a performance of a long-lost Arthurian opera, but also in personally reenacting the Arthurian triangle in their own lives. The situation offers ample opportunity for the irony that Davies so richly relishes, and he was amused to hear that some scholars were even speculating whether the long-lost Arthurian opera (by E. T. A. Hoffmann) actually exists. It does not as far as he knows, but he would be the first to appreciate the irony were it ever to turn up!
RT: What attracted you to Arthurian legend as an ingredient in both

Robertson Davies Tempest-Tost "Children, don't speak so coarsely," said Mr Webster, who had a vague notion that some supervision should be exercised over his daughters' speech, and that a line should be drawn, but never knew quite when to draw it. He had allowed his daughters to use his library without restraint, and nothing is more fatal to maidenly delicacy of speech than the run of a good library. Robertson Davies Tempest-Tost But Freddy was not in a mood to be satisfied with herself, and as she put on her pyjamas and jumped into bed she wondered what Daddy would say if she suggested that in a year or two she should become a postulant in an Anglican nunnery. Somewhat illogically she broke off this train of reflection to read the large illustrated Rabelais which she had abstracted from the library. She found it very good fun, and made a mental list of several abusive terms to use in her next quarrel with Griselda. Robertson Davies Tempest-Tost In her latest speech she had scored a double; she had condemned Griselda's legs because they were beautiful, and sneered at poor Pearl Vambrace's because they were not. Mrs Bridgetower had indeed benefited from higher education.

NUMBER: QUOTATION: If I had my way books would not be written in English, but in an exceedingly difficult secret language that only skilled professional readers and story-tellers could interpret. Then people like you would have to go to public halls and pay good prices to hear the professionals decode and read the books aloud for you. This plan would have the advantage of scaring off all amateur authors, retired politicians, country doctors and I- Married-a-Midget writers who would not have the patience to learn the secret language.

    Robertson Davies
When Robertson Davies became Master of Massey College in the early 1960s, he was asked to find a suitable quotation to adorn the new institution's dining hall; the quotation that he chose serves as a foundation to understanding his life and works, as well as encapsulating what he hoped to achieve at the college:
Happiness is impossible, and even inconceivable, to a mind without scope, and without pause, a mind driven by craving, pleasure or fear. To be happy, you must be reasonable, or you must be tamed. You must have taken the measure of your powers, tasted the fruits of your passion, and learned your place in the world and what things in it can really serve you. To be happy you must be wise. (Santayana)
Another building, the chapel, was considered by Davies to embody the search for self-knowledge, a quest that he asserted always ran parallel to the quest for the divine.
