ROBERTSON DAVIES: BIOGRAPHY With a vision that reflects the experiences of Canadians, Robertson Davies achieved international renown as one of Canada’s foremost men of letters. Born in Thamesville, Ontario, on August 28, 1813, Robertson Davies was the youngest of three sons of newspaper publisher and Liberal senator William Rupert Davies and his wife, Florence Sheppard McKay Davies. With parents who were theatre enthusiasts, Robertson Davies was drawn to the theatre early in his life and acted in school plays. At the age of five, Davies’ family moved to the small town of Renfrew in the Ottawa Valley; when he was twelve, Davies moved to the city of Kingston, where his father owned the local newspaper, the Whig-Standard . From 1928 to 1932, Robertson Davies attended Toronto’s Upper Canada College – the "Colborne College" of his novels Fifth Business, The Manticore, and What’s Bred in the Bone. Truly, these Ontarian towns shaped the geographical heart of Davies’ fictional works. At the Upper Canada College, young Davies was immersed in school dramatics and was the editor of the school paper. Admitted to Queen’s University in Kingston as a special student because he was "hopeless in mathematics," Robertson Davies excelled at the university from 1932 to 1935. He was active in the Drama Guild at Queen’s and continued to be involved in the student theatre at Balliol College in Oxford. Here, he received his B.Litt. in 1938 for a thesis he published the following year, entitled

(1913-1995). The distinguished Canadian novelist attended Queen's but was unable to graduate – not because he fell short in the humanities, but because he struggled with math. A native of Thamesville, Ontario, Davies was an undergraduate at Queen's between 1932 and 1935. He was active in university theatrics and at the Queen's Journal , where he became literary editor in his final year. Despite his success in the humanities, he failed to obtain the math credits which were then a prerequisite for graduation; he transferred to Oxford, which had no such requirement, and received his BLit from there in 1938. After a career as a minor stage actor and theatrical assistant in England, he returned to work as a journalist in Canada, serving as editor and later publisher of the Peterborough Examiner (1940-1965) and at the same time beginning his prolific career as a novelist, playwright and critic. Later he lectured in literature at the University of Toronto. In his first three novels, later known as the Salterton trilogy – Tempest Tost Leaven of Malice (1954), and

Posted: Dec 5 1995 12:21PM TITLE: The Cunning Man AUTHOR: Robertson Davies ISBN: 0670859117 It was already my plan to review this book here, simply because it is the last book I finished, and it is a significant book by one of my favorite authors. However, I learned some very sad news today: Robertson Davies died December 2, so this review will take on a somewhat valedictory tone. For me personally, the news of Davies` death is quite depressing, doubly so because now two of my three favorite non-SF writers have died within a few weeks of each other. (Kingsley Amis having died in late October.) My third favorite non-SF writer, Anthony Powell, is older than either Davies or Amis (Amis was 73, Davies 82, and I believe today is Powell`s 90th birthday. [Actually, Powell was born on 21 December 1905.]) Oh well, on to the book. Robertson Davies was a Canadian author, arguably the finest Canadian writer ever, who wrote plays and novels on generally Canadian subjects. The novels fit generally into trilogies: The Salterton Trilogy, The Deptford Trilogy

Robertson Davies
Robertson Davies (August 28, 1913 - December 2, 1995) was a Canadian author and a true Canadian born in a small Ontario town to immigrant parents, and proud of his Welsh background, he also helped defined the modern Canadian personality. Growing up, Davies was surrounded by language. His father was a newspaper man, and both his parents were voracious readers. He, in turn, read everything he could. While Davies spent his first twenty-three working years at various newspapers in small town Ontario, his first passion was for the theatre, which is where he met and married his wife, Brenda. He was a playwright and director for many years, in England and Canada. Davies later became the Master of Massey College at the University of Toronto (1961-1981). His greatest novel is probably Fifth Business (1970), a curious book which draws heavily on Davies's love of myth and knowledge of small-town mores. The narrator, like Davies, is of immigrant Canadian background, with a father who runs the town paper. In a book full of singular characters, the central character is a simple, mentally defective woman named Mary Dempster, who may or may not be a saint. [Adapted from Wikipedia Browse
