J illy Coppercorn is a young artist who paints fairies, pixies, gargoyles and other fantasy figures in everyday setting. With tangled hair and paint spattered jeans and a perceptual smile on her lips, she seems to believe in everything but there is a dark secret from the past which she struggles to forget. She is one of the three 'small fierce women', a group of women who albeit not blood-related are sisters to each other. People come and go from this group but the three core members, Jilly, Sophie and Wendy, always remain.
The book is really Jilly's story, starting after the aftermath of the accident. Jilly has appeared in previous 'Newford' novels (Newford, for those who are unfamiliar is a fictional town in North America or maybe even Canada) starting with the book 'Memory And Dream' and as explained by De Lint at the start of the book he says, 'I didn't have the heart to recast the events for the book simply to say it in new words. Jilly goes through enough already with what happens to her in this novel.' This is his explanation for the short story, 'In the House of My Enemy', from the collection of short stories 'Dreams Underfoot' being reprinted in entirety.

Check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk W hen you open this book, you could be forgiven for thinking that you have accidentally stumbled into someone else's life, as the detail is so rich and convincing. Although dealing with mythological concepts, it is a work firmly set in our modern world. It discusses many prominent issues, such as homelessness, the impacts of war, urban development and life on US Indian reservations. Kellygnow, the artistic commune where most of the pivotal actions occurs, is an idyll with studios and cabins offering total freedom for creative people to explore their potential - a place poetically introduced through the eyes of the central character, Bettina.
"She was given one of the nooks to make her own - a small space under a staircase that opened up into a hidden room twice the size of her bedroom at home. There was a recessed window looking out on the backyard, overhung with ivy on the outside and with just room enough for her to sit on its sill if she pulled her knees up to her chin. There was also a single brass bed with shiny, knobbed posts and a cedar chest at its foot that lent the room a resonant scent. A small pine armoire. A worn, black leather reading chair with a tall glass-shaded lamp beside it, both 'borrowed' from the library at some point, she was sure, since they matched its furnishings.

Charles de Lint

I'm both grateful to Tolkien and almost wish he'd never been published. Grateful because, without the success of his books we wouldn't have had so many subsequent books, written by those inspired by his work, nor would so many wonderful classic novels have been brought back into print without the existence of a fantasy genre. My irritation has nothing to do with either Tolkien or his work, but rather the fact that because The Lord of the Rings was initially published as a trilogy when it came out in paperback in NA, it begat (in the minds of publishers, writers and readers) the idea that fantasy works best as a trilogy, or as a series, which has resulted in far too many bloated stories that would have been better served in one book. It also resulted in far too many imitations, which in turn spawned their own imitations, so that now the stores are filled with third and fourth generation bad Tolkien. But the man himself, and his writing: pure magic. Charles de Lint

Paperback - Gollancz (2002) The Onion Girl
Newford: where magic lights dark streets, where myths walk in modern shapes, where humans and older beings must work to keep the whole world turning.
At the centre of the entwined lives of all the Newford tales stands a young artist named Jilly Coppercorn, whose paintings capture tile hidden beings that dwell in Newford’s shadows. With her tangled hair, her paint-splattered jeans, a smile perpetually on her lips, she’s darted in and out of the Newford tales. Now, at last, we have Jilly’s own story. Behind the painter’s fey charm there’s a dark secret, and a past she’s laboured to forget. That past is coming to claim her now, threatening all she loves.
`I’m the onion girl,’ Jilly Coppercorn says. `Pull back the layers of my life, and you won’t find anything at the core. Just a broken child. A hollow girl.’ She’s run from the past and the truth for so long. She’s very, very good at running. But life has just forced Jilly to stop.
‘Charles de Lint is one of Canada’s best-kept literary secrets. To read de Lint is to fall under the spell of a master storyteller, to be reminded of the greatness of life, of the beauty and majesty lurking in shadows and empty doorways’ Quill and Quire

Unrelated
Svaha Inside each of us is a tune, a rhyme, a phrase, an image, or something that has haunted us since our childhood, but something whose name we do not know. Perhaps it makes us laugh or cry, cringe in fear or swell with love. Reading The Little Country Morris players and other traditional musicians may be interested in the original fiddle tunes transcribed in the appendix. ^_^
Newford
The classic book to begin your Newford experience is Dreams Underfoot the best) short story collections I have ever read. What would you do if you woke up one morning and no one knew who you were? No, Trader isn't one of those stories that looks at what the world would be like if you'd never lived in it. Or, not exactly, although it does explore what we live for and how we choose to use what gifts we've been given. Max Trader wakes up one morning to discover he's in someone else's body, and he's not at all pleased. In the process of figuring out just what happened, and how to put things back the way they were, he meets some of the more unusual residents of town (I love Bones, aka Crazy Dog, the Kickaha fortune-teller in the park who may or may not be as crazy as he appears) and finds out just what's important in life. This is one of the books which draws on some of De Lint's repeating characters found in Dreams Underfoot and other stories of Newford, although they're supporting rather than starring roles in this case. While you don't need to have read those first, you might get a kick out of their presence if you've already met them.
