Read Review of De Lint, Charles Review Summary About the Author
DeLint Ensnared Me...

Author's Product Rating
Pros
Original fantasy with believable characters.
Cons
I haven't FOUND any... Full Review I love good fantasy fiction. I devour it like Godiva Chocolate. And I've found a lot of very good authors who I will read whenever a new book comes out. I found Charles DeLint by means of a happy accident. I had picked up a BAG full of books in a used book store. Apparently, at some point, I had reached for one book, but wound up taking "Moonheart" instead. I didn't notice until I got home that I had this extra book. I set it aside and didn't give it much thought. Some time passed, and I was out of new reading material again. I spotted that book sitting on top of the bookcase and decided to give it a try. Little did I know that one of the best stories I have ever read was waiting in those pages. I was enchanted with the characters, enthralled by the suspense, and ensnared by the NEED to know what was on the next page! DeLint took elements of the old world and wove them around and through the modern world. He managed to combine elements of Native American lore, Celtic mysteries, and good old-fashioned MAGICK! He created believable characters in unbelievable circumstances. This book even triggered my first foray into Celtic music! Thank you, Mr. DeLint!

Penguin/ROC, paper, $9.95 (0-451-45651-3). Beagle is the class act of fantasy writing, the only contemporary to remind one of Tolkien and, in his darker moments, Dinesen. The title story here concerns a modest man who sets off on a perilous journey across high mountains and is rescued from fearsome rock-targs by a race of gentle giants. He lives among them, novel as Gulliver, for 18 years, learning of their curious funeral rite: eating their dead. In the long romance "The Last Song of Sirit Byar," a traveling bard works magic with his songs, saving his last and greatest song to bring an old love back from madness, dying as he sings it. In "The Magician of Karakosk," a country-bumpkin wizard foils an evil queen by leaving out just one step in the incantation he teaches her, so that she turns herself into nothing more than wind. One of these six stories, "Lal and Soukyan," uses characters from

It is suggested that reading Betsy Hearne's two-part article "Respect the Source" in School Library Journal 39 Nos 7-8 (July- August, 1993): 22-27, 33-37 will alert readers to the importance of sources. It is also anticipated that her study of "Beauty and the Beast" may prove helpful in providing a model for examining multiple versions of a tale: Hearne, Betsy. Beauty and the Beast: Visions and Revisions of an Old Tale. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press, 1989. It would also be useful to read: Tatar, Maria. The best definition I can come up with for my writing was in a review that described it fantasy for people who don’t normally read fantasy. I've taken to calling my writing "mythic fiction," because it's basically mainstream writing that incorporates elements of myth and folktale, rather than secondary world fantasy. I've written the latter, to be sure, but an overall view of my work will show that such stories are very much the exception, rather than the rule. (For those of you who are interested in reading reviewers' comments about my work, there is a link in the index below.) I’m delighted that the novels and stories are so well-received within the fantasy and science fiction field, but I’m also very pleased that so many other readers enjoy them as well. My fans have been incredibly loyal and supportive to me. If you are one of my readers, I'd like to say thank you for helping me make a living from what I love to do. Since there appears to be an interest in my work on the Net, I've realized that I should make this material available at my own website so that it will be all in one place and factually correct. (One site that was brought to my attention a few years ago listed me as deceased as of 1987, which is obviously not true.) I hope the information I'm providing here answers any questions you may have about me and my work. If you need to to contact me, you can write to me at: P.O.
