This list was derived from an online user poll conducted on the Modern Library web site from July 20 to October 20, 1998, during which 217,520 votes were cast. **Note from Steph: Consider the first ten entries, and ask yourself if the internet culties weren't overloading the Modern Library online poll with votes. Damned Scientologists! And, really, who the hell is Charles De Lint, the guy with something like twelve books that made this list? After awhile I just stopped linking to his books. Rand, Ayn. Charles De Lint Sorry, but your browser does not have the necessary plug-in to play the midi. As you walk down the hallway, a door on your right opens and a man who looks like Charles De Lint, pops his head outside. "Hey, care to come and visit a lonely writer?" he asks. You nod your head. "Well then, come on in and we'll have dinner together." The offer sounds good, so you accept. Once inside, you hear a strange screeching sound. Looking around, you spot a large bird sitting on a wooden perch, who eyes you suspiciously. The evening is spent chatting while eating delicious roasted troglodite and boiled margot roots. OTHER STUFF CleverSoul.com Charles de Lint
Charles de Lint is a Canadian author of short stories and novels. His work is often referred to as "urban fantasy" because it takes place (at least partially) in the "real" world, as well as in the world of Faery. Many of his most popular works are set in the imaginary city of Newford (based on Ottawa, Ontario), and combine elements of Native American folklore and Celtic magic into a unique and compelling world all its own. The first de Lint book I read was his "The Ivory and The Horn" short story collection, and it was a very moving experience. Though each is a story in its own right, most are based on a common setting (the aforementioned Newford) and a common group of characters. His short stories remain my favorites.

Jack of Kinrowan is an omnibus volume containing Jack the Giant-Killer (Ace, 1987) and Drink Down the Moon (Ace, 1990). Tor has just released a trade paperback edition under its Orb imprint, and according to the Tor Web site: "Once a title becomes an Orb book, it's our intention to keep it in print as an Orb trade edition...." Certainly, this is good news for everyone. In the first book, Jack the Giant-Killer , the "Jack" of the title isn't quite what you'd expect. He's a she, a 19-year-old named Jacky Rowan, and there's nothing bold or brave about her. Distraught when her boyfriend leaves her for good, she wanders through the streets of Ottawa and runs smack into trouble. At first, she believes that she has witnessed a murder committed by a gang of bikers, and indeed she has. But this is no ordinary gang it's the Wild Hunt, and their victim was a hob, one of the fiaina or wild, solitary sidhe unaligned with either Seelie or Unseelie Courts. In a heartbeat, Jacky has crossed the line into the realm of Faerie. To her bemusement, she finds that she is now

Mr. de Lint's handling of ancient folklore to weave an entirely new pattern has never, to my knowledge, been equaled.
    - Andre Norton -
Originally from the town of Bussum in the Netherlands, Charles de Lint immigrated to Canada four months after he was born on December 22, 1951. Though born in a time when the "fantasy" wasn't even a genre, de Lint spent most of his earlier years immersing himself into the worlds of legend and myth. This fascination led him to read authors such as Andre Norton, Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Thomas Burnett Swann (one of his personal favorites even today). He also read retellings of old tales and their origins, looking into the heart of the mythic structure of legend. Though he wrote constantly, he never thought he would follow in the footsteps of his favorite authors. Instead, he wished to make a living as a musician. As luck would have it, de Lint would eventually make a living at doing both and the fantasy genre would be rewarded with an incredible new voice. The author of more than forty-three published books, in many ways Charles de Lint has helped to reinvent the fantasy genre. His unique tales incorporate the mundane world with myth and folklore, creating urban fantasies. No longer bound by the shackles of imaginary worlds, faeries and elves now sip coffee in cafes while forgotten gods beg for change on the street corner. Though the majority of his stories revolve around the fictional city of Newford, anyone can recognize the streets and alleyways of their hometown in the beautifully written prose.

    Charles de Lint: Spiritwalk
Unlike its predecessor, Moonheart Spiritwalk isn't a complete novel but a short story, a couple of novelettes, and a novella. I think this fragmentation works against it. You see, in Moonheart de Lint managed to bring disparate fantasy elements together, as he does so wellCeltic and Amerind mythology and magic(arguably his favourites), in this case. He also had a sizeable number of major and minor characters. He pulled it off because the novel was about 450 pages long. Spiritwalk is about 400 pages, but "Ghostwood", the novella, is just over 200and de Lint tries to get an incident on the same scale happening. He also tries to bring in all the(surviving)characters from Moonheart , plus a few new ones who were introduced in the novelettes. The result is somewhat cluttered and almost utterly lacking in tension. It doesn't help that the major villain does very little directly throughout the story, so that one never gets any real dread of him as one did for the equivalent in Moonheart The novelettes, "Ascian In Rose" and "Westlin Wind", introduce an interesting pair of characters, but don't develop them as well as they couldthat is left for "Ghostwood", where it just adds to the clutter. And the opening short story, "Merlin Dreams In The Mondream Wood", is nice but doesn't connect with the rest of the book except peripherally. If
