A prece jeden cestny clovek osvezi vzduch, zamoreny tisicovkou krivych podvodniku. Proto si cenim Lestera i dalsich cestnych lidi, ktere jsem poznal v ramci spolecenstvi science fiction i mimo ne.

http://www.msu.edu/~bursonst/response1.html
Response Paper #1-The Significance of Science Fiction In narrowing down the key element of change in science fiction, I can see how science fiction can be such a strongly political genre, encouraging humanity to think about the possibilities that are unlimited by different combinations of collective decisions in a society. I agree with Del Ray when he says that it science fiction is largely based on the question "[W]hat if…," although I am disappointed to see him ponder "[W]hat if men found a way to live forever? [W]hat if men suddenly met an alien race?" (Del Ray, 11). My only question after reading this blatantly sexist paragraph is "[W]hat about women's effect on change in society?" I believe that science fiction is important to read because of what humanity can learn and foreshadow from thinking about change and possibilities. My friend, Julie Brochert Finally, I think that it is significant for all of humanity to read science fiction because, as Del Ray argues, it "serves as a link between cultures" (Del Ray, 352). Whether it is between men and women, eastern and western ends of the worlds, or blacks and whites, science fiction unifies humanity as one reality facing an alternative future. Science fiction helps the world realize how everyone's actions will shape the future in both positive and negative ways. Questions: 1. Does the popularity of science fiction suffer because it encourages people to critically analyze their lives? 2. How do feminists view science fiction? In other words, do they think that its exploration of genderless beings and places is positive for the feminist movement? In turn, what do civil rights activists think of science fiction?

Isaac Asimov Presents The Great SF Stories 1 (1939), DAW books paperback, 1979. Edited by Isaac Asimov and Martin H. Greenberg. I came across this volume, the first in a series, by chance, whilst browsing www.alibris.com. Prior to the late 1950s, Year's Best type anthologies were fairly rare. Everett F. Bleiler and T.E. Dikty produced several, starting in 1949, and whilst Edmund Crispin's Best SF (1955) and subsequent volumes were well-regarded, they weren't annual collections. Judith Merril had a series which started in 1956 and ran through until the mid 1960s, when the likes of Aldiss/Harrison, Wollheim and Carr, and in the 1970s Del Rey and then Dozois kept the Years Best SF flag flying. All but the Bleiler/Ditky books are relatively commonplace in second-hand bookstores, which means that from the mid 1950s to date there is not too much of a problem locating good short SF. Prior to that date it is retrospective collections such as this which have to fill the gap. The book in hand contains some 19 stories, from names which are still well known today (Robert Bloch, Lester Del Ray, L. Sprague De Camp, A.E. Van Vogt, Isaac Asimov etc.) to the less well known nowadays (Eando Binder, Nelson Bond, Joseph E. Kelleam). Isaac Asimov provides an introduction to each story, and the book gives the reader an opportunity to travel back in time some sixty years. So what does this reader get from a collection of stories some twenty years older than he? In the order in which they appear:

The Truth Behind the Rejection Letter! Even Best Selling Authors know the pain of the "rejection letter". Anais Nin, Sinclair Lewis, even Stephen King have had manuscripts rejected many times by editors who either didn't bother to read their work or just didn't like it. When you submit your work to a conventional publisher or agent, your hopes and dreams of publication all depend on two factors. Oddly enough the quality of the work you submit is NOT among them! 1. Will your manuscript ever be read? It is a fact that most cover letters are never even read, never mind the manuscripts they are attached to.
Some time ago, I was speaking on the phone with Lester del Ray. I was a new writer who was trying to find a lead into Random House and by some stroke of luck, I chanced to reach the desk of Mr. del Ray himself. He was a wonderfully kind man who took over an hour from his busy day to talk to me about the Ins and Outs of the conventional publishing world. Here is a list of what he told me:
  • His division alone (Del Ray books) received so many submissions in just ONE day that he would need a staff of hundreds working around the clock to read just the outlines of them all. It was financially impractical for any unsolicited manuscripts to be read at all.

John Norman's Gor
December 1966, marked the beginning of a new science fiction subclass when the New York-based publishing house, Ballantine Books, released the fantasy novel Tarnsman of Gor . Written by John Norman, a young and promising new author, the book chronicled the strangely fascinating history of Counter-Earth through the saga of the Earth-born Tarl Cabot. Founded as a generalist publishing house in 1952 by Ian and Betty Ballantine, Ballantine Books carried a prestigious science fiction author list in both paperback and hardcover, which included already famous authors such as Paul Anderson, Arthur Clarke, Philip Farmer, Ray Bradbury, Robert Silverberg and Jack Vance. On the back cover of Tarnsman of Gor , the publishing house was unable to suppress its enthusiasm: BALLANTINE BOOKS is proud to publish, for the very first time, the original account of the adventures of Tarl Cabot, sometime minor lecturer of Earth, destined to become a fiery fighting Tarnsman on the planet Gor, known also as Counter-Earth.

    Ex-Gaijin writes:
I've been to Hiroshima and visited the memorial museums there. Some people who were in the city of Hiroshima and its immediate surroundings did survive the A-bomb blast. Many later died of conditions brought on by massive radiation exposure, but some did live for decades later. Some people did see the A-bomb blast and lived to tell the tale. The manga "Barefoot Gen" is a good example of this; it's a semi-autobiographical story told by a survivor.
I think the more relevant issue here is a feature of much Golden Age science fiction: a fascination with atomic power, coupled with a near-total ignorance of its true effects. The short story "Nerves" by Lester Del Ray demonstrates this duality perfectly, with its excellent story and shockingly bad (to modern eyes) physics and medicine.
