The Critical Thinking of Samuel R. Delany
Part One
Critical Apparatus: The Theoretical Writings of Samuel R. Delany
Our critical framework will be the theoretical writings of Samuel R. Delany, particularly the texts collected in Silent Interviews The Jewel-Hinged Jaw ; and Starboard Wine The conventional realist expectations from "mundane" fiction, render its preunderstood world an inconspicuous or ancillary setting to the actions and inner states of the characters inhabiting it. A science fiction text presents a world without the guarantees of familarity or ready intelligibility. The imaginative autonomy of SF, therefore, focuses narrative interest on the elements and organization of the world evoked. The divergent readings admitted of the sentence, "Her world blew up," are not merely the difference between the literal and the metaphorical. They indicate that mundane fiction presumes the subjectivity of either the characters or the narrator to be the locus of textual meaning; science fiction, contrarily, prioritizes the "object" (or world) over the subject.
These distinctions are not innocent. The interpretative constraints natural to mundane fiction support a more generalized epistemological prejudice: "In literature, the odder or more fantastical or surreal it is, the more it's assumed to be about mind or psychology" (Delany, "Semiology" 143). The subject orientation of mundane fiction, furthermore, is not simply one option among others, but has been for nearly a century a principal cultural value and a necessary condition for the "literary."4 Literary genres began to be defined in terms of "the priority of the subject" in the late nineteenth century, at the same time that "the awareness of the problems of representation coupled with the critical gestures that separated paraliterature from literature" (Delany, "Dichtung" 188).

Delany - They Fly at Ciron For the most part I enjoyed Delany's writing style in this novel, even if it is at times self-conscious. (Most of Delany's writing, and indeed most "New Wave" science fiction, strikes me that way. As important as the New Wave movement was to the development of SF, whenever I read even the best New Wave works I constantly sense the author looking over my shoulder as I read, saying, "Look at that! How 'bout that! Isn't that clever?") I couldn't help wondering, however, if this shouldn't have been left at its original shorter length. There is not that much depth to the characterization, and the story is quite simple. Still, Delany's ambiguous treatment of the characters and cultures in the book caught my interest. At first glance, the story pits one powerful and very evil group against two very good groups, but on closer inspection it's not so clear. Some of the Myetrans, especially Kire, are sympathetic to a degree, even though their rationalizations for their actions are obviously inadequate. Meanwhile, there is a dark edge to the angelic Winged Ones. Even the innocent villagers settle into the role of killers rather comfortably. The story raises the question whether killing in self-defense can ultimately be just as harmful as killing out of aggression.

Samuel R. Delany and Me
This isn't so much a story as a series of vignettes. They span from my early adolescence to mid-twenties. The author Samuel R. Delany keeps popping up every now and then in my life.
Early Adolescence
My first exposure to Delany's work was in the mid-'70s. I'd started reading science fiction by then. At the local bookstore, his novel Nova caught my eye, mostly for the evocative cover. It was an unusual SF novel; its language was very rich and dense. If your standard Asimov, Clarke, or Heinlein novel was a dress shirt, Nova was a full length robe, embroidered by hand, depicting a long forgotten battle where armored people rode mythical animals into battle against the Winds. The work was also different in that it was hard to grasp exactly what was going on. You didn't notice at first, but the robe had holes. Even after reading the book several times, its language and details, rather than plot, stay in my mind. The bookstore had another book for sale: a mammoth tome named Dhalgren . I figured if a short novel is good, then a big one must be better. I wasn't prepared for the incredible differences between the two works. If

City Paper [Washington, DC], June 10, 1988, p.3 Thanks for your review article "The Flight of Samuel R. Delany" by Jeff Riggenbach (May 20, 1988, p. 34-36). I completely agree that Delany's science-fiction status has hindered recognition by the snobbish and trivializing literary establishment. Delany may be the most philosophically profound novelist alive today. He has been on the intellectual cutting edge since his first novel The Jewels of Aptor in which even as a teenager he transcended the Teutonic Manichean feudalistic world view of J.R.R. Tolkein and his ilk. Contrary to Riggenbach, I find Dahlgren not his magnum opus but his least philosophically interesting work, although it is a magnificently detailed portrait of dead-end decadence. Many of Delany's 1960s works concentrated on problems of identity, the limits of human nature, and the impact on these by advanced technological society, often with surprising plot twists challenging stereotyped racial and sexual roles. Delany's questioning of the limits of myth was nascent even in The Jewels of Aptor (eg. the effect of worshipping a concrete God) but really took off in the underrated

UMass Professor Samuel R. Delany, Renowned Science Fiction Author, to Deliver Distinguished Faculty Lecture
AMHERST, Mass . - University of Massachusetts comparative literature professor and renowned science fiction writer Samuel R. Delany will deliver a Distinguished Faculty Lecture Wed. April 15 at 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The event concludes this year’s series of four Distinguished Faculty Lectures, and is free and open to the public. Following the lecture, Delany will be presented with the Chancellor’s Medal, the highest campus honor bestowed on individuals who have rendered exemplary and extraordinary service to the University. The lecture and presentation will be followed by a reception. A favorite of both science fiction fans and serious literary critics, Delany has been compared to experimental writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Pynchon, and James Joyce. Before joining the University in 1988, he had already established himself as one of the premiere writers of science fiction in the country, having published dozens of novels, the first when he was only 20 years old. He later went on to win the two most cherished awards in the science fiction genre, the Hugo (twice) and the Nebula (four times). He also has won the annual World Science Fiction Achievement Award for the best non-fiction book of the year and the best novella of the year.
