Winter 2000/2001 A Silent Interview with Samuel R. Delany by by Rudi Dornemann and Eric Lorberer AMUEL R. DELANY'S many books offer not only the beauty of well-turned phrases and the spark of provocative ideas, but an illumination won from the exacting exploration of self and society. In science fiction, literary criticism, comic books, memoir, or pornography, to read Delany is to discover. Showing us what we as readers didn't already know, he freshens our eyes for what we had always accepted as familiar. Delany's writing career began in the precincts of science fiction in the early '60searning him the highest awards in the genre before he was 30and has continued through further SF landmarks (e.g., Dhalgren and Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand Hogg and The Mad Man ), works of memoir and family history ( The Motion of Light in Water and Atlantis: Three Tales ), and numerous collections of essays and criticism. This year, he has added two books to his nonfiction column: (Wesleyan University Press, $22) and

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Entry: Samuel R. Delany
Delany, Samuel R(ay) (1942- ) US author and critic, one of the most influential and most discussed within the genre; he has taught at several universities from 1975, and from 1988 has been professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts. He has a somewhat mixed cultural background: he is Black, born and raised in Harlem, New York, and therefore familiar with the Black ghetto; but his father, a wealthy funeral-house proprietor, had the family brought up in privileged, upper-middle-class circumstances - SRD was educated at the prestigious Bronx High School of Science (although he left college after only one term). This double background is evident in all his writing. He became famous as one of the youthful prodigies of sf. Unusually, his first published sf was a novel, published when he was 20: The Jewels of Aptor dos; restored 1968; rev 1971 UK); the later versions restore the third of the book which had originally been excised at Ace Books. This was followed by the The Fall of the Towers trilogy: Captives of the Flame dos; rev vt

Samuel Delany: A Bibliography
Introduction
This document is the second version of my annotated bibliography for Samuel R Delany. Since the first version I've added a lot of new information (especially concerning the various editions of each work) and have reorganized the bibliography to make it easier to read. Comments on the new format are welcome, as are corrections and additions to the listings. I believe that the bibliography is now more or less complete. Its main omission is that it does not list Delany's numerous appearances in science fiction magazines, scholarly journals, and other periodicals. When I gain access to other, more detailed Delany bibliographies I will attempt to fill in this remaining hole in the bibliography. I am aware that many of the detail entries are still sparse. I appreciate the time that many of you have spent to send in jacket copy and comments on this bibliography. I'm hopeful that the evolving state of this document will make you feel as if your efforts have been rewarded.

Samuel R. Delaney
Samuel R. "Chip" Delaney is a noted science-fiction author. One of his most famous novels is " Dahlgren ," an apocalyptic tale which received rave reviews in 1975.. The bisexual theme of the novel clearly reflects its author's private life. He was born in New York City on April 1, 1942. His family owned a mortuary in Harlem. As a child, he was reportedly fascinated with math and science as well as books, theatre, and music. At age ten, he discovered his major sexual preference was homosexual. His mother's discovery of a binder of his masturbatory fantasies led to a round of psychotherapy. He attended the Bronx High School of Science but also wrote his first novel at age 13 and composed music (including a symphony).
In 1961, Delaney married the talented young poet Marilyn Hacker. They had to travel to Michigan to get married because of laws against miscegenation and different age of consent laws for men and women. Hacker knew of Delaney's homosexuality but they had become sexually intimate and she was impregnated. This is what led to the decision to marry. They divorced in 1980.
Delaney's first novel was The Jewels of Aptor . By age 26, he had won four Nebula Awards, though he made little money from any of these works. In 1967, he briefly explored a career as a musician and performed with the band
