by Edwin Denby In the presence of New York at the end of the thirties, the paranoia of surrealism looked parlor-sized or arch. But during the war Bill [Willem de Kooning] told me he had been walking uptown one afternoon and at the corner of 53rd and 7th he had noticed a man across the street who was making peculiar gestures in front of his face. It was Breton and he was fighting off a butterfly. A butterfly had attacked the Parisian poet in the middle of New York. So hospitable nature is to a man of genius. SOURCE : Denby, Edwin. DESCRIPTION:
Spanning 1944 to 1971, the Gerard Malanga Papers comprises correspondence, writings, and memorabilia of the American poet, photographer, and periodical editor (b. 1943). Illuminating both Malanga's professional career and personal life, the collection also reflects the creative energy of both the literary scene and the broader cultural milieu of the 1960s. Essays, interviews, notebooks, poetry, scripts, and editorial projects constitute Writings (Boxes 4-8). Incorporating book reviews, Essays also include Malanga's writings on film. Conversations with Edwin Denby, Steve Jonas, Paul Morrissey, and James Waring are recorded among the transcripts of Interviews. Lacking a readily identifiable sequence, although a few bear dates, the 35 Notebooks (ca. 1962-1970) containing diary entries, drafts of poems, and ideas for various projects have been assigned arbitrary numbers by which they are arranged. Divided into collections and individual titles, Poetry includes drafts and manuscripts arranged by title, followed by 30 folders of miscellaneous worksheets. Production records for the Wagner Literary Magazine, and manuscripts submitted for inclusion in Film Culture (#41) and the first two issues of Inter/view (together with the Intransit material among the Correspondence-Subject Files) represent Malanga's editorial projects. Memorabilia (Box 8) encompasses an address book, a 1971 appointment calendar, an unidentified manuscript, a painting, and printed material, which includes flyers for poetry readings and promotional items.

" Dance Criticism by Croce, Denby, and Siegel" by Julie Van Camp Dance Research Journal 24/2 (Fall 1992): 41-44 Page numbers from the original publication are indicated in the text as follows: /p. x Notes from the original publication are indicated in the text as follows: (x) SIGHT LINES, Arlene Croce. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1987. 364 pp. $19.95. DANCE WRITINGS , Edwin Denby, edited by Robert Cornfield and William MacKay. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1986. xi + 608 pp. $18.95. THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON: NEW DANCE, 1976-1982 , Marcia B. Siegel. Durham and London: Duke University Press, 1991. xvi + 204 pp., photographs. $14.95 (paper). Dance critics provide uniquely valuable documentation of the history of this elusive art form, a service no less important since the advent of videotape, film, and notations. But criticism is not a neutral description of events. Critics make choices about which works to describe and discuss and the properties on which they focus. Thus the weight given to their assessments must take into account the situation and perspective of the writer. Arlene Croce, Edwin Denby, and Marcia B. Siegel rank among the most insightful, articulate recorders of dance history. In these most recent collections of their criticism, each documents a period of dance history for future generations by capturing in words events and experiences lost in time. Or do they?

(Cage M
As early as 1939, when he was in residence at the Cornish School of Music in Seattle, John Cage investigated the application of electrical technology to music. His first (perhaps the first) electroacoustic composition was Imaginary Landscape No. 1, a six-minute radio piece for muted piano, cymbal, and two variable-speed record turntables, designed to accompany the production of Jean Cocteau's play Marriage at the Eiffel Tower . The piece was performed by Cage, his wife Xenia, and two friends in two separate studios, mixed in the control room, and beamed the short distance to the theatre. Imaginary Landscape No. 1 looks ahead to any number of Cage compositions involving radio, magnetic tape, and computer technologies. And yet the irony is that, having produced so many complex intermedia works using the most varied acoustic materials, by 1970 or so, Cage started to write a series of "mesostics," performance works that made use of only a single instrumentthe human voiceand a single medium language.
