Forum: Regarding Alex Katz
July 15 – September 10, Forum Gallery
The Walk by Alex Katz “When I walked in, I was sunstruck,” says Madeleine Grynsztejn of her first look at Alex Katz’s painting, Autumn, when she was planning the 1999/2000 Carnegie International. “I was struck not only emotionally by the beauty of the subject, and intellectually by his absolute sureness of method, but viscerally sunstruck by the painting. It was like being in front of nature itself.” With the recent acquisition of both Autumn and The Walk, Carnegie Museum of Art has become a principal center for works by this important artist. In response to the museum’s commitment, Katz himself donated six works, including a linocut of one of his best-known images of Ada, his wife and muse, Big Red Smile (1994), and an oil and aluminum cutout portrait of poet and critic (and Sewickley native) Edwin Denby, Edwin Edwin (1969). These recent additions enhance the holdings already in place, including an early landscape painting, Ive’s Field No. 1 (1953). The exhibition will also include portraits of Alex Katz by other artists. Katz was born in Brooklyn in 1924, and studied at the Cooper Union in New York, and at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. He now lives in Soho. Throughout his career, Katz displayed great artistic independence, painting figuratively when older artists told him “figuration is obsolete,” and synthesizing two of the major and seemingly irreconcilable tendencies in modern artrepresentation and abstraction.

Expansion Means Industrial Disaster
By Edwin C. Pierce
(Boston: New England Anti-Imperialist League, 1900). T he paramount political issue is Republic or Empire. It involves, however, not only liberty, but the prosperity of the United States. The question of Philippine independence is a question of justice to a people whose rights are as sacred as our own, and nothing can transcend this aspect of the Philippine question in the forum of conscience. The cause of Philippine independence is, moreover, the cause of constitutional republican liberty in America, and also with the success of Philippine independence will come a great deliverance for the people of the United States from the gravest dangers that have ever menaced the national prosperity. Tropical expansion means industrial disaster. The defeat of the colonial policy now proposed means the salvation of labor in the United States. Unanswerable as the argument for Philippine independence is, when the facts are understood, argued as a question of human rights and American constitutional liberty, the overwhelming defeat of Mr. McKinley should be made certain by bringing home to the people the simple and easily comprehended facts and reasons which show that the success of the Philippine adventure for which McKinley and Roosevelt stand involves industrial disaster to our people, and especially injury beyond computation to all classes of manual laborers in the United States. If the Philippines could be acquired in peace and in honor, if their people on bended knee implored us to annex them, we should firmly refuse. With equal firmness we should refuse to acquire Cuba and should refuse to hold Porto Rico.

4: Procedures
Excerpts Peter Gizzi ODE: SALUTE TO THE NEW YORK SCHOOL 1950-1970 (A LIBRETTO) A car roars over a conversation A dish of Irish setters A little horse trots up with a letter in its mouth, which is read with eagerness as we gallop into the flame. A man signs a shovel and so he digs. And the nerve-ends evolved to cope with instant danger do not know what to tell the brain so they think about it As if nobody believes what anybody tells them, gray in the cafe and the shiny rain Bloom, flare, blink open Born eaves clump bounce But do we really need anything more to be sorry about But Ned is lazy, the monkey has to do it all. By day I sleep, an obscurantist, lost in dreams of lists. Did you ever read the wet page of the earth? File prayer tines Glee a short road across my face. Goodbye, Father! Goodbye, pupils. Goodbye, my master and my dame. Have I worn out my distracting powers to doze witless into the scape of night, empty of detail and excuse He has banged into your wall of air, your hubris His substance utters a sun above the stoves of our discourse History, what did the Rose do?

The Crew of the USS YOSEMITE
by Miguel Hernandez
GENERAL:
The following contains info. on the crew of the USS YOSEMITE, an auxiliary cruiser manned by members of the Michigan Naval Brigade, a unit of the United States Naval Militia. The vessel saw action several times during the war.
THE CREW:
Forty-six members of the USS YOSEMITE were faculty, students or alumni of the University of Michigan and many of them also belonged to the elite Detroit Club of that city. Few other U.S. Naval ships had so many prominent and highly educated sailors on its crew list, though high education was typical of many of the United States Naval Militia units. Many of those who served on USS YOSEMITE went on to distinguish themselves in private business and public service. Two of her crew became Secretaries of the Navy; Lt. Truman H. Newbury and Chief Gunner's Mate Edwin Denby. Newbury also served as U.S. Senator and Denby as U.S. Congressman. The latter resigned from the Congress when theU.S. entered WWI and joined the Marine Corps as a private and was discharged with the rank of General. Chief Coxswain's Mate Henry B. Joy returned to the business world and became one of the principal organizers and president of the Packard Motor Company. Ordinary Seaman J. Walter Drake also entered the automobile manufacturing business after the war. He was president of the Hupp Motor Co.
Chief Gunner's Mate Edwin Denby One of the most distinguished Yosemite sailors was Landsman Albert H. Stanley. He was a public transportation specialist employed by the Detroit United Railway. After the war he served as Managing Director of the Public Service Corporation of NJ. Then he was called upon to reorganize the underground railway system of the Grand Omnibus Co. of London, England. For this achievement, he was knighted as Sir Albert by King George V. Chief Engineer Mortimer Cooley returned to his teaching duties at the University of Michigan and in 1903 he became Dean of the School of Engineering.
