We hope the following questions will stimulate discussion for reading groups and, for every reader, provide a deeper understanding of Fasting, Feasting and Diamond Dust: Stories
  • What kinds of freedom and what specific freedoms do the characters seek? In what ways is the "total freedom of anonymity" that Arun experiences in his university dormitory similar to the freedom that Uma seeks? What is the significance of Uma's experiences at, on, and in the sacred river? What does Desai mean when she writes of Uma's near-drowning (in chapter nine), "The saving was what made her shudder and cry ..."? What mysteries and "golden promises" does Uma seek within the convent school, with Mira-masi, and in her Christmas-card collection? In what ways does spirituality enter the novel? What characters have authentic spiritual leanings or capacities? Are Uma's seizures, for example, instances of spiritual possession or eruptions of suppressed frustration and rage?

"Fasting, Feasting" by Anita Desai Unhappy Indian families are unhappy in their own way, too, the author demonstrates in this Booker Prize finalist.
By Sylvia Brownrigg A nita Desai is a wonderfully subtle writer who achieves her powerful and poignant effects by stealth rather than by direct action. Her latest novel, "Fasting, Feasting," a finalist for last year's Booker Prize, tells the apparently spare story of one Indian family and the varying fates of its two daughters and single son; it is only on the novel's final, quiet page that Desai's intricate structure becomes clear and the complexity of her emotional insight makes itself felt. She opens her story with a busy domestic scene, as the parents who have such a fused authority that they are often referred to simply as MamaPapa fussily ask whether daughter Uma has given orders to the cook and prepared a package for son Arun, who is studying in America. In the novel's present tense, Uma is a gray-haired spinster living under MamaPapa's demanding rule. In flashbacks scattered through the novel's first part, we gradually see how Uma arrived at this imprisoned state.
Uma is an eager, thwarted character of genuine pathos: Clumsy, nearsighted, slow, she is treated with neglectful impatience by her parents and with some condescension by her smart and pretty younger sister, Aruna. Her greatest happinesses occur in moments of near oblivion, as when she succumbs to a fit in an ashram to which her pious Aunt Mira-Masi has taken her (the fit is interpreted as possession by the Lord), or when she nearly drowns in the Ganges during a religious ritual but is saved, much to her dismay, by scolding relatives.

Virginia Woolf and Anita Desai are both writers interested in tracing the inner lives of their protagonists in order to show the changing facets of their consciousness. THIRD WORLD VIEWS OF THE HOLOCAUST
Following her reading from Baumgartner’s Bombay Professor Desai entertained questions from the audience. Marvin Brahams : How did you happen to come to pick this theme for your book? Jean Cooper-Schmitt : It’s quite a while since I’ve read Baumgartner’s Bombay , but I seem to recall him as a defeated character.  As you say, he is passive.  As I recall, throughout the book he never seems to make decisions.  Events happen to him.  That’s why he’s in Bombay. Professor Samuel Bernstein : I had a long-running book club in Massachusetts.  We tried to select those books that we feel are most interesting, most influential, richest “literarily.”  I just want you to know that among the books we chose was Baumgartner’s Bombay .  I thank you very much. Professor Stephen Nathanson :  I’d like to relate your scene in which Baumgartner is in the internment camp, because he’s German, to the comment made earlier about the roles of Jews in South Africa.  One of the problems or issues that’s been involved in a lot of [our discussions here] has been the ways in which people are related to the groups that they belong to, or are thought to belong to, and the crudity of a lot of these judgments.  I applaud Professor Edmondson for making the point earlier that it would be wrong to think that because Israel – or Israel’s government, or parts of Israel’s government – had supported apartheid, Jews supported apartheid.  It is certainly not true.  Yet, inevitably, it seems that we have to treat each other as parts of groups.

Previous Home Next Fasting, Feasting - Anita Desai 09 October 1999 Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose! The more things change the more they remain the same. It doesn't matter where you live, how much you earn, what you do. The vacuousness and lack of purpose that can pervade our lives, will do so, irrespective. Neither in excess, nor in deprivation or denial, is there happiness or peace of mind. The first half of the book deals with life in a small, slow town in India, with rigid parents and well-drafted routines while the other half deals with "rule-less' life in suburban US. The more detailed, "Indian half" deals with an orthodox family in a small provincial town. A partly successful, proud father, who goes through life, with set patterns and no passion. A mother who goes along with her husband, doing what is supposedly right and expected of her, curbing and killing all her innate desires. Three children. The eldest, Uma, clumsy and "Forrest Gumpish". The middle daughter Aruna, pretty, ambitious and smart, but eventually also a victim of her choices. The last, a son, Arun, on whom the parents put all their dreams and energies. All of them along with members of their extended family go through some form of deprivation - of will, of fun, of passion and of love.

'Fasting, Feasting' by Anita Desai Desai's 'Fasting, Feasting 'is all feast, no famine Sunday, February 27, 2000 By Mary Rawson Fasting, Feasting By Anita Desai Houghton Mifflin
This two-part novel set in India and America is a delicate, moving tale of love and family. It tells the worlds-apart stories of a brother and sister separated by what their parents ordain and the world imposes. Originally published in Britain, the novel is published by Houghton Mifflin in an original American paperback in order to increase Desai’s U.S. readership. Part One is about Uma, a child woman growing old on the veranda with MamaPapa (her parents evolved into one controlling entity). She is pulled from the convent school in the early grades to help at home when the long-desired boy child Arun arrives. It is she who years later must box up the tea and shawl to warm her brother, studying in America. Plain and myopic, Uma hides behind her spectacles and boxes up her dreams as carefully as her collection of gilt-edged Christmas cards carefully keeping them both without quite knowing what to do with either.

    Elizabeth Ostberg
February 12, 2000. Notes on the Biography of Anita Desai Anita Desai was born in 1935 in Delhi to a German mother and a Bengali father. She grew up speaking German at home and Bengali, Urdu, Hindi and English at school and in the city streets. She has said that she grew up surrounded by Western literature and music, not realizing until she was older that this was an anomaly in her world where she also learned the Eastern culture and customs. She married a businessman at twenty-one and raised several children before becoming known for her writing. Her first book, Cry,the Peacock was published in England in 1963, and her better known novels include In Custody (1984) and Baumgartner's Bombay (1988). She once wrote: "I see India through my mother's eyes, as an outsider, but my feelings for India are my father's, of someone born here" (Griffiths).
She never considered trying to first publish in India because there was no publisher in India who would be interested in fiction by an Indian writer (Jussawalla) and it was first in England that her work became noticed. U.S. readers were slower to discover her, due, she believes to England's natural interest in India and the U.S.'s lack of comprehension regarding the foreignness of her subject.
But Desai only writes in English. This, she has repeatedly said, was a natural and unconscious choice for her: "I can state definitely that I did not choose English in a deliberate and conscious act and I'd say perhaps it was the language that chose me and I started writing stories in English at the age of seven, and have been doing so for thirty years now without stopping to think why "(Desai).
