Little Doors
"Di Filippo is one of the most talented humorists in contemporary fantasy and science fiction." — Publishers Weekly "… Wildly inventive, warmly human, culturally relevant, and deeply funny. Paul Di Filippo does dazzling new tricks with English. And then he puts the wonderful language and the wild science together …" —Rudy Rucker "Di Filippo is the spin doctor of SF—and it's a powerful medicine he brews." —Brian Aldiss Little Doors An all-access pass to Di Filippo's whirlwind imagination, Little Doors makes clear why its author is one of the most respected science fiction writers around. The seventeen stories in this volume are a literary vaudeville peppered with sleazy professors, a cherubic Salvador Dali, over-the-hill mermaids, gender-swapping werewolves, and a Manhattan even stranger than our own. And what's a guy to do if he's born without a brain and wild animals conveniently decide to nest in his skull? Di Filippo has the answer for this and a myriad of other quandaries that are bit out of the ordinary. A Kafka for the digital age, Di Filippo sees into the heart of our times with a vision and creativity that simply won't quit. William Gibson called

Paul Di Filippo
Fractal Paisleys
"Funny, offbeat and ever-so-funky tales of losers and working-class people who come into contact with the decidedly weird. . . Although he has yet to achieve the popularity of a Terry Pratchett or a Douglas Adams, perhaps because he works almost entirely in the short story form, Di Filippo is one of the most talented humorists in contemporary fantasy and SF." Publishers Weekly Ten funky science fiction stories by the widely acclaimed author of The Steampunk Trilogy and Ribofunk . Irreverent, funny and sexy — samples of what Di Filippo terms "trailer park science fiction" — Fractal Paisleys explains the real reason for the disappearance of the dinosaurs, how John Lennon found inspiration, how the L'il Bear Bar in Providence, Rhode Island, ended up with a talking moose head on its wall, why Republicans ruled the U.S. for an unbroken twelve years, and many more secrets of life. The stories are united by Di Filippo's fascination with the infinite variety of alternate worlds: "what-if" scenarios that place an ordinary Joe or Jane in command of the forces that power the universe. Invariably, the results are … unexpected, to say the least. Combining Philip K. Dick's paranoia and Douglas Adams's whimsy, Di Filippo both parodies conventions of the SF genre and takes readers on an exhilarating ride to a fantasy realm where literally anything is possible. Fractal Paisleys includes two never-before-published tales: the other stories were published in such science fiction standbys as

SF Site Review:
Strange Trades ... The Steampunk Trilogy
A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement document.write(''); Strange Trades , Paul Di Filippo's fifth collection of short fiction, is one of the most satisfying SF single-author collections I have read in some time. As the title announces, the stories are concerned with people at work. Di Filippo explores a variety of science-fictional jobs, some strange due to technological advances, others due to marginal or experimental economics, others because they're set in unusual milieus. One of Di Filippo's favourite themes is people living on the edges of society, or in the cracks. In several stories in this book, he depicts, with sympathy, a cooperative economy built in those "cracks." One story, "Harlem Nova," mentions Levi-Strauss' term

Paul Di Filippo, Science Fiction Weekly , January 2002
The year is 1865, and five Union men are trapped in the
siege of the city of Richmond, Va. Cyrus Smith, master
engineer, and his Negro servant, Neb; Bonadventure
Pencroff, a hearty and bold sailor, in charge of a 15-year-old
orphan, Harbert Brown; and, lastly, an experienced and
adventuresome newspaper reporter, Gideon Spilett. Chafing
at their captivity, the men steal a war balloon for their escape,
being joined at the last minute by Top, Smith's dog. They take
flight under cover of a tremendous storm. But unfortunately
the storm does not abate, and the balloon is blown
southwestward for some 6,000 miles, into the uncharted South Pacific. By a stroke of immense luck, the balloon finally crash-lands on a lush, uninhabited island. The battered refugees catalog their material possessions: the clothes on their backs, one match, two watches, a notebook, Top's dog collar and a grain of wheat. From this unlikely stock, adding in hard labor and their wits, the five will, over the next four

Paul di Filippo "All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes: The Orientalization
of the Pynchonian Worldview in Ciphers " The author of Ciphers will detail his strategy in attempting to "update" and "reorient" the conspiratorial/paranoid/totalizing tactics of Thomas Pynchon's fictions (specifically, V The Crying of Lot 49 and Gravity's Rainbow ). A synopsis of the Pynchonian worldview will be followed by a behind-the-scenes account of the author's intentions and methods in constructing this homage/response to Pynchon.

Fast-paced, yet recursively digressive. Hilarious, but poignant. Intellectually stimulating, and generously fleshed out by kinky sex. Ciphers turns paranoia inside out, rewriting history on a grand scale. With Ciphers Paul Di Filippo has undertaken a "thematic sequel" to Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. (No explicit continuation of characters or plot elements, but very much an homage in many respects.) Conspiracy theorists will find much to ponder between these covers, as will herpetologists and economists, religio-historians and pornstar wannabes. Over 500 pages of sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll and information theory!
Praise for Ciphers
"... the sort of novel where it turns out that a 3,000-year-old Chinese hermaphrodite is ultimately responsible for everything from AIDS to the death of Sid Vicious ... an impressive accomplishment."
