- A Secret History of Our Time by Paul Di Filippo - This article is an excerpt from a longer piece entitled "Science Fiction & Fantasy - The many guises of literary fantasy - from comic short stories to slip-stream fiction to mega-novels of alternative history." published in Washington Post Book World, December 15 2002 A Secret History of Our Time
How to summarize in a few hundred words or less a series of maximalist, encyclopedic novels replete with scores of major characters and totalling nearly 2,000 pages? An impossible task! All that can be done is to limn roughly the charms and flavors of Edward Whittemore's long-unavailable cult classics, and point you toward their new publisher, the ambitiously indefatigable Michael Walsh of Old Earth Books, who has republished them in paperback and gone the extra mile by assembling new introductions and biographical essays for this project of rediscovery.
Whittemore's grand themes - the mutability of identity, the tragicomic nature of life, the way pretense becomes reality, the war between faith and materialism, the nature of failure and redemption, the struggle either to fulfill or overcome one's heritage - ensure that his massive story, however baggy its pants, will still inspire strong frissons and catharsis, as well as many laughs. The tangled lineages of his characters - think Ross MacDonald squared - illustrate his desire to make the essential connections that alone confer meaning to life. And his intricate plots ultimately invalidate any of the small logics humans employ to make sense of creation, in favor of the heart's intuition under the light of the soul.

Paul and Emily
Paul Di Filippo's The Steampunk Trilogy (Four Walls Eight Windows, 1995) is perhaps a bit too clearly named. Di Filippo is one of those gifted authors whose writing defies categorization, sometimes jumping willy nilly between sub genres and styles. His immensely important book, Ribofunk , is on its face a sort of biotech collection, but also delves into and occasionally dissects the human condition, questioning the nature of what it is to be human, and what might lie beyond, or perhaps along side. Trilogy is a set of three novelettes, all roughly partaking of the conventions of the Steampunk genre, yet going beyond it to explore the strange world that is Di Filippoland. The first, Victoria , revolves around the substitution of a human/newt clone for the Queen. Very, very weird. The second, Hottentots , goes off the deep end completely, following the frantic hunt for the pickled private parts of the Venus of the Hottentots, a grisly artifact that is to be used as a nefarious magical fetish. The Usual Suspects of the Victorian adventure/melodrama appear, but normalcy is left far behind. Also very, very weird, and often bordering on obscene. But the third story...
Walt and Emily
And awakes on an endless sea of Grass (of course, with Whitman along) in the Land of the Dead. The expedition realizes that its Spiritualist Machines will not get them back to the world of the Living, and it becomes clear that it was Walt and Emily who supplied the metaphysical power that allowed the group the jump to the next Plane. For rising from the Leaves of Grass are the embodied souls of dead poets, the first two who are the modern shadows of our two intrepid poets, Allen Ginsberg ("a fine Hebraic" name, boomed Walt) and Sylvia Plath. The poets are journeying to the Great Sea, to be reabsorbed, as their final act as incarnated souls, and they take the folks from Amherst along with them on their trek. At the end of the journey, Walt and Emily confront a mountain-sized God of Poetry, who casts them back to their own world like twigs in a gale.

record writing reading features ... contact Paul DiFilippo Prolific short story writer, and judging by his vast publication of reviews a voracious reader. Di Filippo is widely regarded as a richly inventive writer capable of many styles, moved by diverse interests.
In particular, Di Filippo is known for his many comic works of science fiction, balanced out with a strong trend of near-future cyberpunk stuff, as well as steampunk variants. In one interview, he describes his goal: "to be some weird mix of Flaubert and Gandhi."
In what I consider to be a herculean feat that should garner wider reknown, Di Felippo wrote five novels and many stories on a Commodore 128. Let me repeat that: a Commodore 128. Sweet leaping Jesus.
He is also has a confirmed case of pronoia. Pronoia is the condition of believing that someone, somewhere it trying to do you some good.
Di Filippo regards himself as at least quasi-Buddhist. He leads a quiet life in Providence, Rhode Island with his partner, Deborah Newton and his dog Ginger.

by Paul Di Filippo He learned about pain and death from an ugly dying dog. It had been run over and lay by the side of the road, its chest crushed, bloody foam bubbling from its mouth. When he bent over it the dog gazed at him with glasslike eyes that already saw into the next world. To understand what the dog was saying he put his hand on its stumpy tail. "Who mandated this death for you?" he asked the dog. "What have you done?" Philip K. Dick, The Divine Invasion
Memories of the 37th M aybe he should get himself a dog. A doga pet, a constant companion, something to fuss overmight help. But then again, maybe not. It was so hard to know, to make up his mind. Considering his unique situation. His special troubles. His extra share of suffering. Adding any unknown factor to the sad equation of his life might disguise its solution, remove any answer forever beyond his powers of philosophical computation. (Assuming his lifeanyone's lifewas solvable at all.) But how could he know for sure without trying?

Reviews Amazon.com Paul Di Filippo is many things: author of The Steampunk Trilogy Ribofunk , and Lost Pages ; a two-time Nebula Award finalist; a leading practitioner of alternate history; one of the original steampunks; one of the original cyberpunks; and a modern master of satire. The 10 stories in Fractal Paisleys blend alternate history, hard SF, modern fantasy, noir-detective fiction, satire, and pop culture to varying degrees, creating what the author calls "trailer park science fiction," in which regular folks (middle-, working-, and nonworking-class) encounter great and terrible powers and technologies of human, alien, futuristic, and fantastic origin. In "Do You Believe in Magic?", the ultimate self-absorbed, '60s-obsessed Baby Boomer emerges from his New York apartment for the first time in 20 years and finds himself an icon and a joke, and his city fire-bombed and theme-parked. In "Flying the Flannel," one of the few Di Filippo stories to feature a female protagonist, an unknown garage-rock group is part of a cosmic battle of the bands, in which the fate of Earth itself is at stake. In the terrifying "Earth Shoes" (possibly the most unusual Philip K. Dick-inspired story ever written), a quantum-uncertainty-infected mood ring gives successive characters the power to remake reality according to their own often unacknowledged and dangerous desires. The remaining stories are as inventive, witty, entertaining, and well-written, making this another high-caliber collection from Paul Di Filippo.

Fractal Paisleys

Four Walls Eight Windows
I read Di Filippo's Ribofunk about a year ago, so I was looking forward to reading Fractal Paisleys , another collection of short fiction. It was somewhat of a pleasing shock to read another side of Di Filippo. While Ribofunk could be thought of as falling squarely in "cyberpunk" (I shudder it's the literary equivalent of "grunge"), Fractal Paisleys is a combination of sex, drugs, rock and roll, and white trash. And aliens, robots, illicit gene therapy, the last of the old-school critics...
Di Filippo is no idle borrower, either. He knows his stuff, and peppers his stories with plenty of legit musical references. The opening tale, "Master Blaster and the Whammer Jammer meet the Groove Thang" features Stevie Wonder and Peter Wolf (ex of J. Geils Band) as freelance trash men who stumble upon... well, the Groove Thang. The magical powers of John Lennon's glasses is interesting, as is the theory that Kurt Cobain's cardigan was actually a sort of fuzzy off-green Terminator, on a mission from the future. "Flying the Flannel" manages to reference just about every early-'90s band I listened to.
This is not to imply that Fractal Paisleys
