Biography of Poet Priestess
Diane di Prima:
The first and most important woman writer of the Beat movement.
"The women of the Beat are the epitome of cool. They were the black-stockinged hipsters, renegade artists, intellectual muses, and gypsy poets who helped change our culture forever. They were feminists before the word was coined, and their work stands beside that of the men."-Brenda Knight Who is Diane di Prima? She is poet priestess, leader, activist, survivor, mother, publisher, feminist, Beat woman, Buddhist, traveler, teacher, student, and healer. Born on August 6, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, di Prima is a second generation Italian descendant. One of the most influential minds from age 3 to7 was her grandfather, Domenico Mallozi, who was very political and a freethinker in the close-minded Depression. In her poem "April Fool Birthday Poem for Grandpa", she says of Mallozi, "I want to/ thank you/ for telling me what to expect/ for pulling/ no punches/...for honestly weeping in time to innumerable heartbreaking/ italian operas for/ pulling my hair when I/ pulled the leaves off the trees so I'd/ know how it feels..." Since entering Hunter High School in Manhattan, NY at age 13, she has been writing constantly. After studying physics at Swarthmore College for two years, she dropped out to pursue her writing full time. In the early 50s she became friends with the "new bohemians" of New York, working in bookstores, modeling, and doing various jobs to make a living. In 1953, Diane met James Waring and began studying Zen and meditative composition and this interest in Buddhism continues to this day and is a major influence in her writings.

    Diane di Prima,
    Loba
    (Penguin, 1998)
A prolific writer generally associated with the Beat Generation, Diane di Prima deserves wider recognition. Loba , originally published in 1978 as a work in progress and hailed by many as the great female counterpart to Allen Ginsberg's Howl , appears in completed form with new material for the first time. For di Prima, the Loba , or "she-wolf" in Spanish, represents a fundamental female principal and a powerful force underlying female sexuality. In traditional mythology, the Loba is labeled as bone-gatherer and re-creator. The Loba's sole purpose is to collect and preserve, especially that which is in danger of being lost to the world. Di Prima seeks to fulfill this purpose by gathering together and recreating mythologies, especially those that connect to her own roles as woman and poet. In many ways, Loba can be read as an autobiographical account of di Prima's struggle to make her voice heard in a generation that was mostly male. But, in a larger sense, Loba also represents the voices of all women. Many of di Prima's poems are particularly concerned with women who have been stripped of their voices. She asks: "How was woman broken? / Falling out of attention. / Wiping gnarled fingers on a faded housedress. / Lying down in the puddle beside the broken jug. / Where was the slack, the loss / of early fierceness? How did we come to be contained / in rooms?"

Beat the Devil: Poet Diane di Prima published her life story at a corporate pressbut she did it her way. Beating the Odds Poet Diane di Prima tells what it was like to be a Beatand a woman By Jonah Raskin T HE DEVIL always gets his due in America, especially in big-time publishing. Jack Kerouac found that out, and he came to hate the fame that accompanied his career as a bestselling author. Allen Ginsberg felt the same way. "I feel like a prisoner of Allen Ginsberg," he once complained. Diane di Primaprobably the best-known woman writer of the Beat Generationhas always been wary of publishing with the Devil. But probably she'll survive her current skirmish with fame better than her Beat brothers, if only because she has never needed big-time literary attention. Recollections of My Life as a Woman (Viking; cloth; $29.95), di Prima's 34th book in the last 40 or so years, is her first work to appear under the imprint of a corporate publishing house. All her previous books, including Revolutionary Letters and This Kind of Bird Flies Backward a title that suggests her own cultural flight back in time to 19th-century bohemianismwere published by small, alternative presses like City Lights and Totem.

Diane di Prima, one of the premiere poets of the Beat Generation, stands out from the male dominated literary coterie boasting icons like Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Ferlinghetti. Raised by first generation Italian-American parents, Di Prima remembers writing at the age of seven, deciding to be a poet at thirteen. In her memoir, Recollections of My Life As a Woman: The New York Years Di Prima discusses her early fascination with the Romantic PoetsKeats, Shelley, Byrontheir "tone of passionate urgency I craved" (77). After leaving Swarthmore College, she moved to New York, becoming part of the avante-garde bohemian crowd, making a living modeling for artists and working in bookstores. Not content to be merely a muse to the men around her, Di Prima devoted time to her own work, even after she became a single mother in 1957. Despite the pressures, both financially and societally, Di Prima followed the birth of her child with the publication of her first volume of poetry This Kind of Bird Flies Backward.
