DI PRIMA MSS.
The Di Prima mss., 1956-1972, are the correspondence and writings of Diane Di Prima, 1934- , poet and editor. The letters are to her mother Emma (Mallozzi) Di Prima, (Mrs. Francis Di Prima), about the children, about moving, and her objections to a distasteful article; to her daughter Jeanne during a poetry reading tour of Casper, Wyoming, Tucson and Flagstaff, Arizona, and Gallup, New Mexico, in Jan.-Nov., 1971, and during the same tour to her son Alexander Marlowe and to Grant Fisher commenting on the reception of her work. Letters to Diane Di Prima come from John Wieners in Oct., 1963, and from Robert Creeley in Jan., 1968, about her work as an editor. Other letters in June-Sept., 1971, from Alan Brilliant, Patti Field, and Eric Smith of the Unicorn Press are concerned with publishing the Di Prima broadside XV Dedications. A letter of Jeanne Di Prima to Robert Alfred Jump Wilson, January 12, 1972, encloses the draft of a poem, dry heat of the tassajara, by Diane Di Prima, A.D.S., 1p., 28cm. Included in the collection are Songs by Peter Hartman, a poem Night Samba by John Wieners, and a photograph of Diane Di Prima by Alan Stephen Marlowe.

RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE AS A WOMAN (The New York Years)
a memoir by Diane di Prima
Putnam Viking 2001 $29.95 hardback Poetry lovers will find a lot to enjoy in this frank and artfully written memoir. A virtual who's who of the downtown New York art scene of the late fifties and early sixties is featured in Diane di Prima's splendid Recollections Of My Life As A Woman . Such luminaries as Frank O'Hara, Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Jim Dine, James Waring, Cecil Taylor, John Wieners, Audre Lourde, Yvonne Rainer, Philip Whalen, Yoko Ono, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jack Smith, Larry Rivers, Helen Adam, Robert Duncan, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and many others come and go as di Prima tells the story of her emergence as a poet during one of the most creative periods in New York City's history. Di Prima's comments on the creative process while telling the story about The Poets Theatre's production of Michael McClure's The Blossom, with set designs by assemblage artist George Herms, becomes a fascinating exposition on the subject of art as magic. This production included the airing of Antonin Artaud's To Have Done With The Judgment of God over the night sky above Bleeker Street. Grounded in the basic hard work of theatrical production, di Prima relays the chaos and madness and transforming power that occurs when art enters the realm of the divine. This is art as magick, she tells usnot art as entertainmentand it is this magickal path she chose in order to make her way in life.

WOODSTOCK ON DI PRIMA
Pray to Write Poetry
On Tuesday, April 25, at Columbia College, the legendary beat poet, Diane Di Prima, guest poet-in-residence, gave a lecture concerning The Spiritual Practice of Poetry , during which she had notes, quotes and anecdotes. The lecture was entertaining and light-hearted. She elicited laughs and chuckles from the audience of about fifty people, especially when she quoted her youngest child at age three:
"A person without any imagination has to tell the truth! And steal all their songs!'"
Diane Di Prima decided to become a writer at age fourteen. By college age she was on her own in New York City, but eventually left to live in California. During her appearance at Columbia, she revealed that the "Beats" came knocking on her door, after she submitted poetry to Ferlinghetti.
Diane Di Prima, at age 65, considers writing poetry a spiritual matter, like meditation or prayer. She believes writing poetry brings a person to the inner self, reveals compassion and connects the person with the unnamable forces of the universe.
Di Prima employs Buddhist words and beliefs in her writing and workshops. She recommends thinking and writing about "The Two Demons" known as Hope and Fear, also called "The Two Great Bandits."

I have just realized the stakes are myself
I have no other
ransom money, nothing to break or barter but life
my spirit measured out, in bits, spread over
the roulette table, I recoup what I can
nothing else to shove under the nose of the maitre de jeu
nothing to thrust out the window, no white flag
this flesh all I have to offer, to make the play with
this immediate head, what it comes up with, my move
as we slither over this Go board, stepping always
