Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Dickey's urban Southern roots are clearly evident throughout his poetry. Dickey began his college education at Clemson University, but left at the outbreak of World War II to enlist in the United States Army Air Force. His experiences as a fighter pilot provided him with subject matter for some of his best known poems. Dickey subsequently completed both Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Vanderbilt University where among his teachers was the critic Monroe K. Spears who was influential in directing Dickey's interest toward poetry. James Dickey began writing poetry in 1947, but turned to writing full-time only in 1960 when his first book, Into the Stone, and Other Poems

James Dickey Position:
Head Coach
Experience: 9th Year at Tech James Dickey, whose fast-paced, exciting brand of basketball has resulted in almost 20 wins a season for Red Raider basketball, is in his ninth year as the head coach at Texas Tech University. Considered by many to be one of the up-and-coming stars in the coaching ranks, Dickey has indeed elevated the Red Raider program. In fact, the success of Dickey’s program has played a critical role in the construction of Texas Tech’s United Spirit Arena, the new home of Red Raider basketball for the 1999-2000 season. Five of his former players — Cory Carr, Tony Battie, Mark Davis, Darvin Ham and Jason Sasser — have played in the NBA since 1995-96. Battie became the first Red Raider to be selected as a lottery pick in June, 1997, when the All-America center was taken as the fifth pick by the Denver Nuggets. In the 1998 draft, two-time Big 12 Conference leading scorer Cory Carr was selected in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to the Chicago Bulls. Carr’s selection marked a school-record fourth consecutive year Texas Tech has had a player taken in the NBA draft. Dickey’s Texas Tech teams have amassed a 145-90 overall record. Considering the plight of the program before his arrival (35-79 in four years), the resurgence of the Raiders has been quite revealing. Before he became head coach, Tech endured through four-consecutive losing seasons and was mired in a 13-45 two-year slump.

James Dickey (1923-1997) - A Memory
Clark Powell
"There ain't nothin' to dyin', really. You just get tired. You kind of drift away." James Dickey was musing to friend about a recent near-death experience last year, when he flatlined at the doctor's. The poet was in his 73rd year, and had survived more than 100 night bombing missions in the Pacific during World War II and Korea, a lucrative stint in advertising, years of hunting and wilderness trekking, and the usual excesses of being a post-war American poet. Dickey was still something of a celebrity when I first met him in Tuscaloosa in 1978. He grew up in a generation when poets could still enjoy a modest fame, yet when all too many (Roethke, Berryman, Crane, Plath, Lowell, Sexton, Schwartz) went mad, killed themselves, or drank themselves into oblivion. If Ezra Pound (one of the craziest) was right in 1934 when he called artists and poets "the antennae of the race" (buggy image, to my mind), then it sure is spooky to look at the lives of major American poets of our century. No wonder Internationalists like Eliot and Pound insisted that art be judged on its own sake, without reference to the artist's personal biography! Born in Georgia in 1923, Dickey wrote his best poems from the 1950s to the 1970s, won a National Book Award for Poetry for

IN AND OUT OF CLASS WITH JAMES DICKEY
BY DAVID HAVIRD
James Dickey, April 1974 (Photo credit: Janet Lee Burnet) L The secretary, a middle-aged woman with blond hair, cracks open the front door. Has Dickey neglected to tell her of our appointment? Twice he postponed my visit. "I've never known you to be so inaccessibleat least to me," I finally said, and he promptly set a time for us to meet: today at noon. Out of sight of the doorway, he orders her to let me in. A ledge extending leftward from the slate-floored foyer connects the book-shelf-lined living room with the family room, and there sits Jim, surrounded by waist-high stacks of books, a tomb under construction. My father had died in the summer of 1995; now, a year later, I was in Columbia, where I grew up, to dispose of his personal effectsI had sold the condominium he'd purchased after my mother's death in 1984. "There's no reason for me to come back," I told Jim. Since my graduation from the University of South Carolina in 1976, I had at least telephoned him whenever I visited my family. "Yes, there is," he insisted. W hen I was fourteen and in the ninth grade, Dickey delivered the commencement address at the University of South Carolina. My father, a graduate of the Law School (as well as the College of Liberal Arts), took me to hear the poet. It was my father's custom to attend the commencements; he had no special feeling for poetry, boast though he did of winning a bet with a co-worker who insisted that there was to be "no mourning at the bar" when Tennyson "put out to sea." "No moaning, moaning," my father would repeat, "no moaning of the bar."

Pier Paolo Pasolini Novelist and agrarian Andrew Lytle (The Velvet Horn), an early encourager of James Dickey, was one of the advisory editors who selected him for the Sewanee Review fellowship that allowed the poet to spend part of 1954 and 1955 in France. In 1955 Dickey joined Lytle at the University of Florida, where Lytle directed the creative writing program and Dickey taught freshman composition. When a controversy resulted from Dickey's reading of his poem "The Father's Body " to a Tallahassee women's group, Lytle did not support him, and their close friendship terminated. Dickey abruptly quit the university to become an advertising copywriter. The letters below are reprinted without editorial changes. Matthew J. Bruccoli
