December 5 ~  See It My Way Play It As It Lays Writing is the a c t of saying "I," of imposing o n e s e l f upon other people, of saying, listen to m e see it m y way, change your m i n d ~ Joan Didion One of America's finest writers and astute observers, Joan Didion (1934-), was born on this date in Sacramento. Her father was an Army Air Corps officer and the family moved often. Didion wrote her first story at age five in a notebook from her mother. About her early years struggling with her muse at Berkeley, she explained, "All I knew was what I wasn’t, and it took me some years to discover what I was. Which was a writer." A journalist, screenwriter, and novelist, she is best known for capturing life in California with vivid details and sharp dialogue. Her critically-acclaimed novels include, Play It As It Lays A Book of Common Prayer (1977), and The Last Thing He Wanted About her craft, she has said, "The impulse for much writing is homesickness. You are trying to get back home, and in your writing you are invoking that home , so you are assuaging the homesickness."

Journalist and author, Joan Didion considers herself an extensive revisionist. As a journalist, she has become very critical of American politics and culture, writing essays for magazines, as is seen in the collection Slouching Towards Bethlehem . Didion describes her writing style as throwing a lot of ideas down on paper until they form some sort of reasonable pattern. As a writer she has published many books such as; Salvador Democracy: a novel Play It As It Lays A Book of Common Prayer and many others. She talks about meeting her husband John Gregory Dunne, and what it's like to live with another writer. They have not collaborated on a novel, but says that they have worked together on films. Didion talks to Don Swaim about this and more in the interview. Listen to the Joan Didion interview with Don Swaim (37 min. 41 sec.) Download Free RealPlayer

Didion, Joan
Didion, Joan (1934- ), American novelist, screenwriter, and journalist, who is noted for an intense, lean style that evokes a sense of disconnection and cultural despair. Many of her writings express concern about the disintegration of North American society.
Didion was born in Sacramento, California, and educated at the University of California, Berkeley. She was hired by Vogue magazine in 1956 after winning a contest for young writers and served as an associate editor and a movie reviewer for the magazine from 1956 to 1963. She contributed to Mademoiselle and The National Review, then left to work on a novel, Run River, which was published in 1963 and received critical acclaim. Her second novel, Play It as It Lays (1970), was nominated for a National Book Award and was a best-seller. Slouching Toward Bethlehem (1968) is a collection of her magazine pieces, and it focuses on the drug culture in California. Didion and her husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, collaborated on the screenplays for Panic in Needle Park (1971), a Cannes Film Festival prizewinner, and A Star Is Born (1976).
Didion's other novels include A Book of Common Prayer (1977), Democracy (1984), and The Last Thing He Wanted (1996), all of which comment on American cultural and political values by depicting individual Americans in such places as Southeast Asia or Central America during periods of political strife. Didion's nonfiction works include Salvador (1983), her account of the war in El Salvador, and Miami (1988), about Cuban exiles in Miami, Florida. The White Album (1979), which discusses Californian culture, and After Henry (1992) are compilations of her essays.

  • "Political Fictions" by Joan Didion This cool, devastating look at America's empty political spectacles takes apart everything from Reagan's delusions to Clinton's impeachment. By Charles Taylor A few weeks back, on the season premiere of "The Practice," the writers took their cue from the headlines. The story, about a politician's adulterous affair and the cover-up that follows a murder, was the show's version of the Gary Condit-Chandra Levy case. We've gotten used to seeing current events transmuted into TV drama. What was strange about this episode was that it seemed more real than the real-life drama it was riffing on. In the wake of Sept. 11, it's as if all of our recent political life can only be talked about as entertainment. The opening sections of Joan Didion's new collection of essays, "Political Fictions," veer close to a similar irrelevancy. Didion began doing reported political essays for the New York Review of Books in 1988, when the magazine's editor, Robert Silvers, asked her to cover the presidential election. The book is dedicated to Silvers and to Didion's husband, John Gregory Dunne, who, she says, "lived through my discovering what he already knew."

Contact Us October 15, 2002 5:30-7:30 p.m. Join us for a public conversation with author Joan Didion regarding her latest work, Political Fictions , a collection of essays exploring the growing "disconnect between America's "permanent professional political class" - politicians, pollsters, reporters, campaign advisors, fund raisers, major donors - and an electorate increasingly alienated from the political process. A native Californian, Didion began her writing career as a journalist and has continued to bring a strong moral sense and existential vision to her work, whether in her luxuriant fiction or her insightful essays. In Political Fictions , Ms. Didion combines highly personal commentary with an apocalyptic view of American politics and culture. Winner of this year's prestigious George Polk Journalism Award, the book has been hailed as "astonishingly original, luminous political reporting" (David Halberstam) and a "tour de force" ( The Washington Post ). This event will provide a unique opportunity to observe one of America's most perceptive and thought-provoking writers. Booksigning follows talk.

(Open City Books) $14 Published March 15. Recently, I was at home writing, but my mind was naggingly preoccupied by a series of low-grade worries: whether a check I had written would bounce, the corrosion on my car battery, the direction my life was taking. It was raining, with the kind of dense charcoal sky that seems about to envelop the worldand, like an idiot, I was listening to Nick Drake. The overall effect was one of fragmentary distress, a lack of focus more than merely annoying to someone who generally leads with her head; but I realized that all this ambient anxiety could be written into an essay, toward understanding (perhaps) the lie of the bohemian lifestyle, the kind of lie you have to believe in order to get from one day to the next. My emotional state, in short, could be funneled into a kind of literary grace. This is something Meghan Daum, in her collection
