Click to view enlargement About the painting: Diogenes of Sinope, d. c.320 BC, was a Greek philosopher, perhaps the most noted of the Cynics. He pursued the Cynic ideal of self-sufficiency, a life that was natural and not dependent upon the nonessential luxuries of civilization. A student of Antisthenes, he is credited with the development of the chreia (moral epigram), with a scandalous attack of convention entitled Republic (which influenced Zeno of Citium), and with tragedies illustrative of the human predicament. Because Diogenes believed that virtue was better revealed in action than in theory, he made his life a protest against what he thought of as a corrupt society. He is said to have lived in a large tub, rather than house, and to have gone about Athens with a lantern in the daytime, claiming to be looking for an honest manbut never finding one. In later art, Diogenes is often depicted in a torn cloak, with a dog, carrying a lantern. previous painting next painting list all paintings themes This painting has not been themed yet.

Illustration: Mary Evans Picture Library Diogenes was called Kynos, the Dog, which gives us the word cynicism, because he lived among dogs and had a snarling wit. There is no doubt that he was attracted to Athens because of its philosophy ("love of wisdom") and its democratic tradition, which meant that his determination to contradict everything around him had a context and a point to them. But by this time democracy was on the wane. One philosopher, hearing that Athens needed more horses for a war, suggested that Athenians just vote that asses are now horses.

Diogenes: reliable ORF-finding in short genomic sequences
About Diogenes
Diogenes is an ORF-finding code developed for use in high-throughput operations. It targets short genomic sequences, searching for and reporting likely protein-encoding regions. It does not attempt to replicate standard gene-finding software, but rather complements them in the cases they are the weakest: dealing with short sequences on the order of 300 to 800 bp. Software

How it works
Diogenes operates on your sequences in the following way:
  • It identifies ORF candidates in all six reading frames It assigns measures of coding potential to each candidate region and then A decision is made if the potential is high enough to report as a likely protein encoding region. If it is, a report is made.
Coding potential is measured using statistics gathered from organism-specific training sets.
A little more detail
Prediction of protein-encoding regions in Diogenes is a three-step procedure. In the first step, stretches of sequence without stop codons are located in all six reading frames; these become ORF candidates to investigate in the next step. In this second step, organism-specific hexamer statistics are used to identify a maximum likelihood estimate of the protein-encoding portion of the ORF candidate.

ZetaKon was founded in 1988. ZetaKon specializes in providing Software configuration and support for Customers using the Rosemount System III distributed control system and the currently obsolete Rosemount DIOGENES control system. ZetaKon has been chosen by Fisher Rosemount to provide continuing support for their discontinued DIOGENES control system. We support the DIOGENES control system with complete systems engineering, configuration and software support as well as limited on-site maintenance support. ZetaKon can work with you, within the limited resources of available obsolete parts, to provides replacement parts. We provide upgrade paths for DIOGENES users to migrate into new state of the art control systems. For example we have recently translated an existing DIOGENES CO2 plant installation to a Moore Apacs+ System with a WonderWare MMI. We are currently implementing a WonderWare MMI running under Windows 2000 to replace DIOGENES Video Display Stations (VDS).

    Early Greek Philosophy

Diogenes of Apollonia John Burnet 186. Date After discussing the three great representatives of the Milesian school, Theophrastus went on to say: And Diogenes of Apollonia, too, who was almost the latest of those who gave themselves up to these studies, wrote most of his work in an eclectic fashion, agreeing in some points with Anaxagoras and in others with Leucippus . He, too, says that the primary substance of the universe is Air infinite and eternal, from which by condensation, rarefaction, and change of state, the form of everything else arises. R. P. 206 a. This passage shows that the Apolloniate was somewhat later in date than the statement in Laertius Diogenes that he was contemporary with Anaxagoras would lead us to suppose, and the fact that his views are satirized in the Clouds of Aristophanes points in the same direction.
