    CHANCELLOR OF AVE MARIA

Only three months after the Jesuits’ reassignment of Rev. Joseph Fessio, S.J. sparked an outcry from Catholics nationwide, the Jesuits have allowed Fr. Fessio to accept a new assignment as chancellor of Ave Maria University (MI). His first task will be to establish a new Ave Maria campus in Naples, Florida. “What is being planned is so daunting, yet so crucial for the Church in the Americas, that we need the help of seasoned educators,” said Ave Maria president Nicholas Healy. “I asked the Society of Jesus if they would assign Father Fessio to us, and they graciously agreed.” Fr. Fessio’s reassignment in March to a hospital chaplaincy near Los Angeles was widely seen as retaliation for his defense of the St. Ignatius Institute, a successful Catholic “great books” program at the University of San Francisco (CA), after the university fired its directors and tightened control over it. Fr. Fessio subsequently helped found Campion College, a two-year program modeled after the St. Ignatius Institute with campuses in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Fr. Fessio’s provincial forbade him from any involvement in the new college, which was publicly opposed by USF. He was permitted to maintain a long-distance relationship as editor of Ignatius Press, based in San Francisco.

Culture is the achievement of human intelligence. It is forged in the crucible of that refinement for the human mind and heart known as education. Historically, the university is the final stage of that refinement. The forging of a Christian culture is especially dependent on the Catholic university. In our own day when even a "human" culture with basic human values of life and love is menaced by an ever growing "culture of death," the need for strong Catholic universities becomes almost self-evident. Beatrice and Benedick: Spurning
Eros, Preserving Self Much Ado about Nothing Though it has been suggested that Beatrice and Benedick progress throughout Much Ado about Nothing , Beatrice becomes more masculine and Benedick becomes more feminine (Fletcher 97), neither clearly defines themselves as masculine or feminine. Apart from the roles they have been cast in Benedick, a successful soldier; Beatrice a clever, attractive niece to the governor of Messina the two are almost indistinguishable in banter and positioning. Both, in fact, behave so similarly, that one could easily posit another familiar Shakespearean theme: twins split at birth or cross dressing/gender-crossing. Consider one of Beatrice’s many harsh rejoinders:
Benedick: You take pleasure then in the message?
Beatrice: Yea, just so much as you may take upon a knive’s point, and choke a daw withal. You have no stomach, signior, fare you well. (II.iii.253-256) And one of Benedick’s:
Don Pedro: I shall see thee, ere I die, look pale with love.
Benedick: With anger, with sickness, or with hunger, my lord, not with love. Prove that ever I lose more blood with love than I will get again with drinking, pick out mine eyes with a ballad-maker’s pen, and hang me up at the door of a brothel-house for the sign of a blind Cupid. (I.i.247-254)

Feedback U.S. LAW DEANS' LETTER ON LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS Introduction Letter Appendix The following letter, signed by 164 of the 180 deans of the US law schools accredited by the American Bar Association, has been sent to 93,000 potential law school applicants by the Law School Admissions Council. "Law School Rankings May Be Hazardous To Your Health!" It is easy to feel overwhelmed about the mass of material available to help you decide which law schools would best suit your needs, interests, and aspirations. You may be tempted to trim your research by resorting to some commercial ranking that purports to reduce to one easily digestible number from #1 to #180 how each ABA-accredited law school stacks up against the others. As deans of schools that range across the full spectrum of several such rating systems, we strongly urge you to minimize the influence of rankings on your own judgment. These rankings leave many important variables out of account, arbitrarily weight others, and are generally unreliable as a guide to those qualities of different schools that a candidate should consider when applying to law school. In the recent words of Newsweek editor Kenneth Auchincloss, "Rankings generate huge hype, which is far more likely to serve the publisher's purpose than the readers'. . . .Applicants need help in widening their knowledge of schools that may be right for them, not narrowing their choices according to a ranking system."
