A Word on Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was a man of diverse interests - in mathematics, logic, photgraphy, art, theater, religion, medicine, and science. He was happiest in the company of children for whom he created puzzles, clever games, and charming letters. As all Carroll admirers know, his book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865), became an immediate success and has since been translated into more than eighty languages. The equally popular sequel "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There", was published in 1872. The "Alice" books are but one example of his wide ranging authorship. "The Hunting of the Snark", a classic nonsense epic (1876) and "Euclid and His Modern Rivals", a rare example of humorous work concerning mathematics, still entice and intrigue today's students. "Sylvie and Bruno", published toward the end of his life contains startling ideas including an 1889 description of weightlessness. The humor, sparkling wit and genius of this Victorian Englishman have lasted for more than a century. His books are among the most quoted works in the English language, and his influence (with that of his illustrator, Sir John Tenniel) can be seen everywhere, from the world of advertising to that of atomic physics.

The Beginning: 1832 to July 1862
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known to many by his pen-name, Lewis Carroll) was born on January 27th 1832 at the parsonage (photographed at right) at Daresbury in Cheshire. He was the eldest son and third child (out of eleven) of an Anglican clergyman Charles and Frances Dodgson (nee Lutwidge). Charles was eleven when his family moved to Croft in North Yorkshire and, at the age of twelve, was sent to Richmond School as a border. He was taught at Richmond by James Tate who formed a good idea of Charles' potential, especially in mathematics. On the 27th of January 1846 Charles was enrolled at Rugby and stayed for three years. It was during this time that he devised ways to entertain his brothers and sisters, in the form of magazines containing poems, stories and drawings. These magazines included "Useful and Instructive Poetry" (five issues), "The Rectory Magazine" (nine issues), and "The Rectory Umbrella". Charles matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1850. For the next five years he worked steadily until he attained a college Mastership (in October 1855). During these five years Dodgson continued to write and compiled a scrapbook of his best writings, called "Mischmasch". "Mischmasch" included a four line verse, entitled "Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry", that was to become the first verse of his later nonsense poem "Jabberwocky". In 1855 two important events took place that had a profound effect on the rest of Dodgson's life. Henry Liddell arrived as the new Dean at Christ Church and Dodgson was introduced to photography and the

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . By Lewis Carroll. With Forty-Two Illustrations by John Tenniel. New York: Appleton and Co., 1866. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, a clergyman, and a professional mathematician. It is not surprising, then, that this "juvenile"originally written for the three Liddell children, daughters of the Dean, but particularly for Alice Liddell (later Hargreaves)should have such a strong appeal for adults. Alice , as well as its equally famous sequel Through the Looking Glass , both of which were written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, abounds in sophisticated humor, satire, puns, and philosophical observations. When Dodgson decided to have Alice published, he had to pay for the printing of 2,000 copies himself. It was done at the Oxford University Press and was to be published by Macmillan on commission. The 1865 Oxford printingnow more familiarly known as "the 1865 Alice "proved unsatisfactory to both the author and the illustrator and Dodgson had all copies recalled after a few had been sold or distributed by presentation. He regained all but ten copies, kept two himself, and distributed the remaining recalled copies (thirty-six) to hospitals. A second edition of Alice , more to the author's standards, was published by Macmillan in 1866, printed by the firm of R. Clay.

Euclid, Boob ,V., proved, Algebraically (1874); Euclid, and his Modern Rivals (1879), the work on which his reputation as’ a mathematician largely rests; and Curiosa ‘Mathematica (1888). Throughout’ this dual existence Mr Dodgson pertinaciously refused to acquiesce in being publicly identified with “Lewis Carroll.” Though the fact of his’ authorship of the “Alice” books was well known, he invariably stated, when occasion called for such a pronouncement, that” Mr Dodgson neither claimed nor acknowledged any connexion with the books hot published pnder his name.” He died at Guildford, on the 14th of January 1898. His memory Is appropriately kept green by a cot in the Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street, London, which was endowed perpetually by a public subscription. ‘ See S. D. Collingwood, Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll (1898). The etymology of these names has been much discussed. That of the latter, which has generally been adopted by German and French authorities, seems to defy investigation, but the former has been shown by Prof. Schlegel (Versi. en Mededeel. X. Akad. Wetensch.. ii. pp. 2~5 et seq.) to be the homely name of the dabchick or little grebe (Podiceps minor), of which the Dutchmen were reminded by the round stern and tail diminished to a tuft that’ characterized the dodo. The same learned authority suggests that, ,dodo is a corruption of Dodaars, but, as will presently be seen, we herein think ‘him mistaken.
