odgson was a distinguished Mathematics Professor at Oxford University and the author of the immortal "Alice in Wonderland" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass". He was a gifted amateur photographer with a particularly original and natural approach to childrens' portraiture. He took the hobby up in 18565 when a friend explained the wet collodion process to him. Of all the photographers of the period he was the one who had the closest links with Pre- Raphaelitism. His friendship embraced all wings of the movement. He knew Holman Hunt, Woolner, Collins, Hughes, Millais, Rossetti and Ruskin. But the affinity was not only a matter of social acquaintance. Like Rossetti, Lewis Carroll was haunted by an Ideal which he was ever ready to clothe in female form; in Carroll's case the form was always that of a child. This links him to Arthur Hughes, whose female models, if not actually children, display the "childlike" qualities of innocence and fragility.
Carroll gave up photography in 1880, possibly because of the popularity of the dry-plate process, which he thought inartistic.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll): A Brief Biography
Karoline Leach [Kandmleach@aol.com]
Antecedents and Early Life
"Lewis Carroll," as he was to become known, was born on January 27 1832. His family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, Conservative, Anglican, High Church , upper middle class, and inclining towards the two good old upper middle class professions of the army and the Church. His great-grandfather, also Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become a bishop; his grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed most romantically in action in 1803 while his two sons were hardly more than babies. The elder of these yet another Charles - reverted to the other family business and took holy orders. He went to Westminster School, and thence to Oxford. He was mathematically brilliant and won an astonishing double first which could have been, but turned out not to be, the prelude to a brilliant career. Instead he married his cousin in 1827 and retired into obscurity as a country parson. Young Charles was born in the little parsonage of Daresbury in Cheshire, the oldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half year marriage. Eight more were to follow and, incredibly for the time, all of them - seven girls and four boys survived into adulthood. When Charles was 11 his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in north Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious Rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years. Dodgson senior made some progress through the ranks of the church: he published some sermons, translated Tertullian, became an Archdeacon of Ripon cathedral, and involved himself, sometimes influentially, in the intense religious disputes that were dividing the Anglican church. He was High Church, inclining to Anglo-Catholicism, an admirer of

(Charles Lutwidge Dodgson 1832-1889)
Almost everyone who has visited Ripon Cathedral will have been shown the carving of the Griffin chasing the rabbit down the rabbit hole, carved on the 15th century misericord under the Mayor's seat in the choir and will have been told the long-held opinion that, together with the underground, tunnelled crypt and other carvings, it could well have played a part in inspiring Alice in Wonderland . Ripon comes into the Dodgson story in 1852 when as a young man his father, also Charles, was appointed a canon of Ripon Cathedral, requiring thirteen weeks residence in Ripon each year which lasted for sixteen years. During vacations from Oxford young Charles joined the family in Ripon, where he worked not only on his mathematics but also wrote letters, poems and stories such as Ye Carpette Knyghte, and Legend of Scotland (for the Bishop 's children) as well as parts of Alice Through the Looking-Glass. His The Hunting of the Snark, the longest and arguably the most important humorous poem in the English language, has amongst its principal characters not only a Boots but also a Bellman, both well-known Ripon characters. A prodigious letter-writer, in Ripon Charles Dodgson began a register of the letters written and received which he kept till just before his death, eventually reaching number 98,721.

Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll, Pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), English author, mathematician, and logician, best known for his creation of the immortal fantasy Alice in Wonderland Carroll was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, on Jan. 27, 1832, and was educated at rugby and at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. From 1855 to 1881 he was a member of the faculty of mathematics at Oxford. He was the author of several mathematical treatises, including Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879). In 1865 he published under his pseudonym Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . Its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There , Appeared in 1872. These were followed by Phantasmagoria and Other Poems The Hunting of the Snark (1876), and a novel, Sylvie and Bruno (2 vol., 1889-93). He died at Guildford, Surrey, on Jan 14, 1898. Always a friend of children, particularly little girls, Carroll wrote thousands of letters to them, delightful flights of fantasy, many illustrated with little sketches. They have been collected and published as The Letters of Lewis Carroll (2 vol., 1979) by Morton N. Cohen and Roger L. Green. Carroll gained an additional measure of fame as an amateur photographer. The greater number of his camera portraits were of children in various costumes and poses, including nude studies; he also did portraits of adults, including the actress Ellen Terry and the poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Apparently because his posing of children was criticized, he abandoned photography in 1880.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop.
Lewis Carroll, from Alice in Wonderland Seven years and six months! Humpty Dumpty repeated thoughtfully. An uncomfortable sort of age. Now if you'd asked MY advice, I'd have said `Leave off at seven' - but it's too late now. I never ask advice about growing, Alice said indignantly. Too proud? the other enquired. Alice felt even more indignant at this suggestion. I mean, she said, that one can't help growing older. ONE can't, perhaps, said Humpty Dumpty; but TWO can. With proper assistance, you might have left off at seven. Contrariwise, continued Tweedledee, if it was so, it might be, and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic! -Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass "Where shall I begin, please your Majesty?" he asked. "Begin at the beginning," the King said, gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." -Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll "The Walrus and the Carpenter."

http://www.tombtown.com/bios/carroll.htm
CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODSON "LEWIS CARROLL" Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodson in Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Carroll went to Mr. Tate's school at Richmand at age 12; his father having educated him until then. Carroll excelled in his studies and became the champion of the weak and small. He earned the reputation of "a boy who knew how to use his fists in a righteous cause." After contributing a story to the school magazine, Dr. Tate wrote to Dr. Dodgson that Charles had "a very uncommon share of genius," and "you may fairly anticipate for him a bright career." From Richmond, Carroll went to Rugby to further his education, and then on to Christ Church College, University of Oxford, his father's college. According to the terms of the studentship, Carroll was to remain unmarried and proceed to holy orders. Several years later he was ordained a deacon, but he never proceeded to priest's orders. Throughout his education, Carroll consistantly distinguished himself with honors, congradulations, and respect from his peers and mentors alike. He wrote, "I am getting tired of being congratulated on various subjects; there seems to be no end of it."
