Donaldson Links Biography Born in Cleveland in 1947, Donaldson spent his youth (from four till sixteen) living in India, where his father worked with lepers. He has a B.A. from the College of Wooster (Ohio) and an M.A. in English from Kent State University. During the Vietnam War he was a conscientious objector and spent two years doing hospital work in Akron, Ohio. His publishing debut was in 1977 with the first Thomas Covenant trilogy. He received the prestigious John W. Campbell award as the best new science fiction writer of 1978. Back To Authors Page Home Top Writing Style In my opinion, Donaldson is the only fantasy writer that I have read who surpasses J. R. R. Tolkien. The Thomas Covenant books are based on a rich, solidly developed mythology. The setting for these novels is not overly complex, which makes it easy to keep track of the myths that drive the people of "The Land." Donaldson writes in a formal style, but less formal than Tolkien. While I would not rate his books an easy afternoon read, they are thoroughly enjoyable. His character development is rich and deep. Although I have not read the Gap series, I understand that it is also very well written. Digger has read the Mordant's Need books and recommends them. But beware...the main characters of Donaldson's novels are anti-heroes. They are dark, flawed human beings that are difficult to love. This does not mean they aren't fascinating to read about. It just means it is difficult to develop empathy for them. Donaldson explores many dark and depressing themes (like leprosy and rape) in his novels. But if you can get past the depressing subject matter, his books are thoroughly enjoyable because they are so well crafted. His plots are well thought out and don't contain holes that require a reader to fill in the blanks.

Stephen R. Donaldson Authors Book Titles Home Reave the Just and Other Tales by Stephen R. Donaldson Buy This Book Hardcover Paperback Make no mistake about it Donaldson is a dark, dark writer. In this collection of eight short stories, he covers topics ranging from demonic possession to unjust imprisonment to soulless machinery. Some of these stories have been published before, mostly in other science fiction anthologies. Most of them are set in the realm of fantasy; only one can truly be called science fiction. Despite their dark and sometimes disturbing themes, I thought these stories were interesting. This may have been due, in part, to the fact that they were not each a full-length novel. Extended doom and gloom may have been too much, but in short bursts, I found Donaldson to be manageable. Quite a few of these stories have an Arabian Nights-type of feeling to them. Many are set in Mid-Eastern or medieval styled countries. I especially enjoyed "The Djinn Who Watches Over the Accursed" and "Penance." Few of Donaldson’s stories seem to have unqualified happy endings, but there is usually a lesson to be learned or a point to be made so the ending is usually appropriate, if not always the one the reader might wish for. Donaldson is definitely not the kind of writer who throws his main character into all sorts of trouble and then waves a magic wand to rescue him or her and make things completely better. Instead, there are issues to be worked through and flaws to be dealt with. The main character in Donaldson’s tales generally walks away a different person from the individual s/he was initially.

This is truly a landmark series in the genre, as much so as was "Lord of the Rings" in my opinion. If my review doesn't convince you to read it, then read the review again and reconsider. This series had a big impact on my whole view of SF/F. The way I see it...there are two basic rules to Strongly Recommended works (books or movies): Everyone has one. Virtually everyone it is recommended to is disappointed. Well, "Covenant" is my cross to bear. As for my most recommended movie, it's a tossup between "Caddyshack" and "Raising Arizona" I suppose, but then there's "Tron" and "Excalibur" and "Running on Empty" and ... hmmm, maybe I need to write another reviews page. Series: Mordant's Need The Mirror of Her Dreams (8 r) A Man Rides Through (8 r) Another great work by Donaldson, but not close to the magnitude of his achievement with Covenant. This tells the story of another anti-hero, Terisa, who is drawn from the "real world" into a world of magic and mirrors, politics and death. It's an engrossing story, and I definitely recommend it, but read Covenant first.

Knowing that with an unsympathetic protagonist and an unusual prose style it would be hard to get published, he decided to submit it to every potential publisher in America, in alphabetical order. Forty-seven rejection slips later, it had been rejected by every fiction publisher in the USA. So, he went back to the top of the list. It was accepted by Ballantine books in 1976, and quickly became a word-of-mouth bestseller. This article concentrates on "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant", but also describes Stephen R. Donaldson's other books. Minor spoilers included. Introduction Stephen R. Donaldson is one of the more controversial SF and Fantasy authors. His books are full of unsympathetic characters who generally experience great suffering. Some readers find the violence, suffering and degradation intolerable. Others are put off by his willful toying with genre conventions and his portentous writing. With other fans, Donaldson is an overwhelming favourite. In genres that are frequently accused of escapism, his books are dark and morally complex. Even when grotesquely unlikable, his characters are starkly memorable. Donaldson is also highly skilled at pacing and creating tension: his books can be hard to put down.
