I love books. My vision of paradise includes a room filled wall to wall with books ... including a bunch by the following authors who like Stephen Donaldson have written some incredible fantasy-based works.
J.R.R. Tolkien . Okay, this is a gimme. Tolkien crafted the most loved, enduring fantasy stories in the English language. My personal favorite (or 'favourite' as the Professor might've said) is the Silmarillion , though I understand a lot of Tolkien fans don't like it compared to the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit
Clark Ashton Smith
. Possibly the best fantasy author you never heard of, he was a colleague of H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, August Derleth and other greats of the 20s and 30s. I chalk up his relative obscurity to the fact he didn't publish book-length stories and his imagination encompassed so many fantastique locales and characters they could only be imprecisely clumped together into categories like Xiccarph, Hyperborea and Zothique. His imagination soared to amazing heights and plunged to depraved depths; his monarchs are often petty and jaded, his sorcerors typically revel in necromancy and the wildlife flora and fauna both is usually predatory. To an even greater extent than Donaldson, the entirely self-educated Smith drenched his works with obscure, cryptic or polymorphed words and phrases to establish a mystical, ancient-feeling atmosphere. Like Robert E. Howard, Smith wrote powerful poetry. Fortunately a nice guy put together a web site called

Stephen R. Dolaldson: The Thomas Covenant Series
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson is simply the BEST fantasy fiction ever written!!! Donaldson received the prized HUGO award for it! The story is about Thomas Covenant, a simple man that has developed leprosy. To survive with this ailment, requires that he has aknowledged his impotence and his fraility. In the fantasy land he finds himself in, only he can save the inhabitants! They are depending on a man that can never permit himself the possible delusion of being powerful, hence his title "the Unbeliever!" For him to admit having power in the "Land" could very wll plunge him into the depts of dispair! To a leper, being powerful means being delusional means sure death! The crux of the delimma is: does he remain impotent and save himself and damn the Land, or does he accept the Land and damn himself!
The Series is enscribed in two seperate trilogys. They are all worthy of reading.
They first trilogy is as follows:

Stephen R. Donaldson:The Gap Into Vision: Forbidden Knowledge
The first book in the Gap series would have been almost perfect as a standalone. In fact, it was initially written as such. But having read the next book in the series, I can't regret that he decided to continue the story. The Gap series focuses around three charactersAngus Thermopyle, a pirate; Nick Succorso, another pirate; and Morn Hyland, a member of the United Mining Company Police. Neither Angus nor Nick is a really sympathetic character, but Donaldson uses his talent for making you sympathize with the unlikeliest of people. Angus is scum, with few morals and fewer scruples, but he has a tenacity that you can't help but respect. He takes an unfortunate background role in this book after his starring role in the last one. Much of the book is about Morn Hyland's self-corruption and deception of Nick Succorso. She plays the game about as far as she can before Nick finds her out, and even then is ultimately victorious. Nick is nowhere near as sympathetic as even Angus(despite his much better public reputation), and by the end of the book you will likely end up hating him as much as Morn does. In the middle of this are some highly interesting science-fictional ideas. Datacores(a form of write-once memory used to record

Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
Stephen R. Donaldson

Top 20
Non-stop, high-fantasy epic. The most hard to stop reading series I've encountered. From one fascinating environment to the next, unforgettable characters weave a dark psychological tale of struggle and apotheosis. Far from any namby-pamby, love-and-light, goody-goody adventure; this serious story evolves on both an external, environmental level as well as a personal, internal journey. At heart, it's the conflict between good and evil. But this is no simplistic, black-and-white simulation - ever-deepening layers of subtleties engage and puzzle. Some readers say this was too "dark" for them to read and that they couldn't get far into it. Indeed, a description of experiencing leprosy won't rank high on many people's escapist fiction list. And while Thomas Covenant's external struggles, although extremely difficult and vivid, won't disturb most people too much (with at least two exceptions); his inner wrestling with self-confidence and doubt may prove too familiar and challenging. David Pringle includes this in his list of "The Hundred Best Modern Fantasy Novels", but adds "It is odd that a work which is so difficult to read should have become so popular." But don't be dissuaded! Going through this soul-searching process with Thomas includes myriad jewels of insight and delight. Awe-exploding adventures keep fingers clinging to the book. Fireworks-color worlds ignite on the pages. Archetypal characters like the wise old man Lord Mohram, the best friend giant, Saltheart Foamfollower and the rock-like loyal Bannon blaze a place into our consciousness and remain friends for life.

77. An Interview With Stephen R. Donaldson
My first introduction to stephen R. donaldson came in the form of 'The Power ThatPreserves' the second book in the first of two Thomas Covenant trilogies.
http://www.hostultra.com/~penneysplace/donaldson/donaldson.htm
My first introduction to Stephen R. Donaldson came in the form of 'The Power That Preserves' the second book in the first of two Thomas Covenant trilogies. As a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, Donaldson's fantasy world immediately appealed to me. Greedy for more, I found 'Lord Foul's Bane', the first book in the series. After reading it, I was hooked. Over the next few years, I waited impatiently for each installment, and driving the people at 'A Change of Hobbit', my favorite bookstore, insane with my constant inquiries about upcoming books. Finally came the last installment of the second trilogy, 'White Gold Wielder'. I was shocked and disturbed that Donaldson kills off the character of Thomas Covenant, the protagonist of the two trilogies, at the end of the book. Though I have been an avid reader all of my life, for the first time I was inspired to take up a pen and write to an author. I thoroughly trounced poor Stephen, demanding to know why he had killed off the best hero to come down the pike since Aragorn and Frodo. Being the gentleman that he is, Stephen replied to my indignant letter, thanking me politely for the feedback. That started up a ten-year correspondence between us; in every letter I wrote, I asked the same question: Will there be a third Thomas Covenant trilogy. Stephen politely and unfailing avoided answering the question.

Was it always your intention to be a writer or did you do other jobs beforehand? It was an ambition I discovered very suddenly when I started college. As my first idea for a story crossed my mind I was pretty much committed to growing up to be a professional writer. Up until that moment it had never crossed my mind. It is easy to look back in retrospect and say that you can see the seeds of my being a writer everywhere in my early life, but I was completely unaware of this. It happened very suddenly when in the course of about an hour I got very excited about writing a particular story, and when I started writing it, it was actually a novella about eighty to eighty-five pages, I wrote the first four or five pages and started showing it to people and got so much encouragement right at the beginning that this vulnerable plant was allowed to take root, and by the time it had taken root I was hooked. I suppose that in the first three or four months that someone could have dissuaded me if they had worked hard enough at it, but after that it was too late. So did you have any jobs other than professional writer?
