    John Donne
Although he later became an Anglican and died Dean of St. Paul's, John Donne (1572-1631) was born and reared a Catholic, and his training as a Catholic in religious polemicalong with the sort of scholastic training that formed the basis of the typical Renaissance university educationhelped determine the sharply analytical set of his mind. Donne's poetry marks sharp stylistic and thematic breaks from the sort of verse written by his predecessors and indeed most of his contemporaries. For example, while a good deal of Elizabethan poetry is flowery and decorativeat times laden with Petrarchan conceits and a song-like rhythmDonne focused his work around highly concentrated images which often involved a dramatic contrast or are notable for their hard intellectualism. When typical Petrarchan conceitsbleeding hearts, cheeks like roses, lips like cherriesappear in Donne, they are soundly mocked. Donne liked to twist and distort not only images and ideas, but also traditional rhythmic and stanzaic patterns. Characteristic of Donne's Poetry
    • It is sharply opposed to the rich mellifluousness

First of all, I must admit that I don't much care for John's poems. But he's important to knowafter all, he was the leader, so to speak, of the metaphysical school of poetry and by all accounts, a nice guy. He was described as a very charming and companionable person, even if he was raised Catholic . Though he attended the very prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge , he was unable to take a degree either place because his family objected on religious grounds to the oath of allegiance all graduates had to take. Undaunted, John began to study law in 1592, in hopes of landing a state job, or perhaps even a court position . He also frittered away some of his time messing about with some poetry. His introduction into the fast lane was rather slow in coming . It wasn't until 1597 that he finally got any kind of a job, and that was working as secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton. Sir Thomas was a great and impressive statesman, being Lord Keeper of the Great Seal and a real mover and shaker of the times . So naturally, if you were his secretary, eloping with his niece would be a bad thing to do. Unfortunately, our hero did just that, running off with and marrying Anne More, daughter of Sir George More and niece of Sir Thomas' second wife. To make matters worse, Anne was underage, so her irate father promptly had John arrested for marrying a minor without the consent of her guardians

John Donne author of metaphysical and love poetry that is among the greatest ever written
Donne's metaphysical poetry makes use of complex, shifting images which are remarkably convincing to the reader. The greatness of his poetry is the simplicity in the ideas expressed - despite the use of extensive techniques and varying images, a simple and complete argument is moulded in all of the poet's works.
At an early age, Donne entered the University of Oxford, and later had a short stint at Cambridge University. He did not receive a degree from either university; but subsequently studied law and worked as a lawyer.
He became a priest of the Anglican Church in 1615, after deserting the Catholic faith in which he was brought up. His collection of Holy Sermons, 160 Sermons is some of his most interesting work.
Donne's metaphysical poetry and the irregular techniques he employed which were so unique for his time had a profound influence on many authors.
