45. John Donne: The Love Poetry Of John Donne. English Literature Essay, Contributio

Donne's Songs and Sonnets do not describe a single unchanging view of love; they express a wide variety of emotions and attitudes, as if Donne himself were trying to define his experience of love through his poetry. Love can be an experience of the body, the soul, or both; it can be a religious experience, or merely a sexual one, and it can give rise to emotions ranging from ecstasy to despair. Taking any one poem in isolation will give us a limited view of Donne's attitude to love, but treating each poem as part of a totality of experience, represented by all the Songs and Sonnets , it gives us an insight into the complex range of experiences that can be grouped under the single heading 'Love'.
In To his Mistris Going to Bed we see how highly Donne can praise erotic pleasure. He addresses the woman as:

Only the calenture together draws
Dear friends, which meet dead in great fishes' jaws,
And on the hatches, as on alters, lies
Each one, his own priest, and own sacrifice. (23-26) Here the speaker makes the grim claim that the only way to reunite oneself with loved ones is through death, and a ghastly one at that, being driven mad by the sense of isolation and hopelessness caused by the raging waves of the sea, and casting oneself into the jaws of "great fishes." One could even argue the point of sacrilege against Catholicism from these lines, using as evidence the images of sacrificing oneself at the "alter" of the sea, as well as the concept of one being "his own priest," both of which directly conflict with the sacred Catholic house of worship and the need for tutelage and confession for acheivement in religion (25-26). These lines also suggest that Catholicism has become decentralized, even isolating, and, ultimately, a futile effort in weathering "the calme."
Fate grudges us all, and doth subtly lay

Welcome to the John Donne Society Welcome to the John Donne Society Home Page. The John Donne Society was organized in 1985, inspired in part by scholarly meetings of the editors of The Variorum Edition of the Poetry of John Donne , the multi-volume edition now in process of publication by Indiana University Press. Love, all alike, no season knowes, nor clyme,
Nor houres, dayes, moneths, which are the rags of time
The first annual conference of the John Donne Society was held in February 1986 at the Gulf Park Conference Center of the University of Southern Mississippi. Every February since then, the Society has met at this propitious site in Gulfport, MS, an hour east of New Orleans on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. No man is an Island , entire of it self Each year several dozen scholars and students of Donne gather at Gulfport to explore and discuss Donne's life and writing. Participants come from throughout the United States and Canada, with significant participation from international scholars as well. They range from promising graduate students to distinguished scholars, some presenting 20-minute papers in panel/discussion format, some giving lengthier invited talks, and all united by their interest in discussing Donne's writings and their multiple contexts.

Donne, John
John Donne (rhymes with "sun") was born in 1573 (his father died in 1576) into a Roman Catholic family, and from 1584 to 1594 was educated at Oxford and Cambridge and Lincoln's Inn (this last a highly regarded law school). He became an Anglican (probably around 1594) and aimed at a career in government. He joined with Raleigh and Essex in raids on Cadiz and the Azores, and became private secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton. But in 1601 he secretly married Anne More, the 16-year-old niece of Egerton, and her enraged father had Donne imprisoned. The years following were years of poverty, debt, illness, and frustration. In 1615 he was ordained, perhaps largely because he had given up hope of a career in Parliament. His poetry, mostly written before his ordination, includes poems both sacred and secular, full of wit, puns, paradoxes, and obscure allusions at whose meanings we can sometimes only guess, presenting amorous experience in religious terms and devotional experience in erotic terms. After his ordination, his reputation as a preacher grew steadily. From 1622 until his death in 1631 he was Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and drew huge crowds to hear him, both at the Cathedral and at Paul's Cross, an outdoor pulpit nearby. His prose style is in some ways outdated, but his theme continues to fascinate: "the paradoxical and complex predicament of man as he both seeks and yet draws away from the inescapable claim of God on him."
