Edward Dorn - obituary The Philadelphia Inquirer , December 14, 1999
Edward Dorn; poet, 70, wrote 'Gunslinger'
ASSOCIATED PRESS BOULDER, Colo. - Edward Dorn, 70, a renowned poet who attended the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina, has died. Mr. Dorn, who died Friday, wrote the Western work "Gunslinger," which was described by poet Robert Duncan as "an American Canterbury Tales." Mr. Dorn was born in 1929 in Villa Grove, Ill. He once described himself in a biographical note as having been "educated at the University of Illinois, and somewhat corrected at Black Mountain College." At the height of the Depression, a disaffected band of teachers and students took refuge in the North Carolina mountains and opened the college with one rule: Be intelligent. That rule at Black Mountain College proved enough to guide minds that went on to become some of the most creative of the last half of the 20th century. Choreographer Merce Cunningham, film director Arthur Penn, contemporary artists Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg were there, as were avant-garde composer John Cage and poet Robert Creeley. They either taught or took classes during the school's 23-year run. The college closed because of financial problems in 1956.

Robert Creeley: On Burroughs
A few days after William S. Burroughs died, I sent poet Robert Creeley an email asking if he had any memories of Burroughs to share. He sent this back the next day. The photo of Burroughs' famous orgone box, inspired by the Orgone Energy Accumulator designed by alternative psychologist Wilhelm Reich, is by Lee Ranaldo. Levi Asher Thankfully I saw him again quite frequently over the years, and got past my school boy admiration (though never entirely). Anyhow we'd meet most frequently on the road and I liked his droll humor and clarity, call it, always. One time after a talk at Naropa wherein he had recounted his experiences with a device he'd assembled permitting one to track by thought "traces" or manifests of the physical entiry itself (he said he'd found one of his cats who'd got lost), he was bemused that none of the young had asked afterwards how to actually make the device, despite he had emphasized that all the necessary components could be got at any place like Radio Shack. Where's their curiousity, was the question. Another time, when mutual friends were sitting around him in sad depression over fact of an impending death much affecting him, as I came in, I am convinced he looked up and winked at me certainly a communication, like they say. I've always thought of him as a literalist, as I think I was saying what he felt, understood, recognized, respected, abhorred, in very literal terms, including the fantasies. Thinking of an early common interest in Korzybski, the non-Aristotelian sense of "meaning" and syntax, his use of cut-up was very practical and effective. It broke the classic "order" or narative as simply a "cause and effect,""historically" ordered sequence. I'd already connected with Celine, for example, and Burroughs was the solid next step.

Juvenile Justice; A Measured Look Inside the Wasteland
Sunday, March 24, 1996, Los Angeles Times;
Section: Book Review; Page: 1 By: Elston Carr; Elston Carr is a graduate student in the African America studies department at UCLA
Take a trip in my mind
beast, not a human being ...
not much I can do,
screams have no voice no matter how loud I shout ... I could be called a in juvenile hall headed for the penitentiary. Armed with a court order, which gave him unprecedented and unrestricted access to juvenile court, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Edward Humes guides us through this world in which mediocrity, incompetence, pervasive frustration and apathy are often hidden behind the convenient cloak of juvenile confidentiality. Now a contributing editor to Buzz Magazine, Humes won the Pulitzer in 1989 for his reporting in the Orange County Register (where he was on staff from 1984 to 1989). In this book, he brings his exemplary skills as an investigative journalist to bear, dispelling stereotypes of teens committing drive-bys and other mayhem that routinely make the evening news. Should I care about you

DESCRIPTION:
Spanning 1944 to 1971, the Gerard Malanga Papers comprises correspondence, writings, and memorabilia of the American poet, photographer, and periodical editor (b. 1943). Illuminating both Malanga's professional career and personal life, the collection also reflects the creative energy of both the literary scene and the broader cultural milieu of the 1960s. Essays, interviews, notebooks, poetry, scripts, and editorial projects constitute Writings (Boxes 4-8). Incorporating book reviews, Essays also include Malanga's writings on film. Conversations with Edwin Denby, Steve Jonas, Paul Morrissey, and James Waring are recorded among the transcripts of Interviews. Lacking a readily identifiable sequence, although a few bear dates, the 35 Notebooks (ca. 1962-1970) containing diary entries, drafts of poems, and ideas for various projects have been assigned arbitrary numbers by which they are arranged. Divided into collections and individual titles, Poetry includes drafts and manuscripts arranged by title, followed by 30 folders of miscellaneous worksheets. Production records for the Wagner Literary Magazine, and manuscripts submitted for inclusion in Film Culture (#41) and the first two issues of Inter/view (together with the Intransit material among the Correspondence-Subject Files) represent Malanga's editorial projects. Memorabilia (Box 8) encompasses an address book, a 1971 appointment calendar, an unidentified manuscript, a painting, and printed material, which includes flyers for poetry readings and promotional items.
