HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Dostoevsky, Fyodor Mihailovich Russian novelist. Remarkable for their profound psychological insight, Dostoevsky's novels have greatly influenced Russian writers, and since the beginning of the 20th century have been increasingly influential abroad. In 1849 he was sentenced to four years' hard labour in Siberia, followed by army service, for printing socialist propaganda. The House of the Dead (1861) recalls his prison experiences, followed by his major works Crime and Punishment The Idiot (186869), and The Brothers Karamazov Born in Moscow, the son of a physician, Dostoevsky was for a short time an army officer. His first novel, Poor Folk , appeared in 1846. In 1849, during a period of intense tsarist censorship, he was arrested as a member of a free-thinking literary circle and sentenced to death. After a last-minute reprieve he was sent to the penal settlement at Omsk for four years, where the terrible conditions increased his epileptic tendency. Finally pardoned in 1859, he published the humorous

No other writer (save Leo Tolstoy) comes anywhere close to having the philosophical depth and all-around awesomeness as the great Dostoevsky. Dostoevsky was born at a hospital for the poor in Moscow in 1821. His mother dies in 1837, and he moved to St. Petersburg the same year in order to attend the Army engineering college. In 1839, his father diesmurdered by his own serfs. Dostoevsky graduated from the academy in 1843, but he resigned in 1844 to devote his life to writing. His first novel, Poor Folk , was published in 1846. This was a psychological study of its main character written in the form of a letter. It was a huge success. A few weeks later, his second novel

DOSTOEVSKY, Fyodor Mikhailovich (Alternate spellings: Fëdor, Fiodor, Dostoyevsky)
Born: November 11, 1821, in Moscow, Russia Died: February 9, 1881, in St. Petersburg, Russia Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevesky was born in Moscow to impoverished parents. While his father was descended from the Russian nobility and his mother was from a wealthy merchant family, the political upheaval in Russia had reduced them to the economic status of the working class. Dostoevesky's father worked at a hospital for the poor, and consequently the family, including Dostoevesky's four brothers and two sisters, lived on the hospital grounds. With sickness and death around him, Dostoevesky developed a familiarity with human suffering that may have prepared him for the tragedies he would experience throughout his life. In 1837, Dostoevesky enrolled at the St. Petersburg School for Military Engineering. While he was at school, his father was murdered by his servants for the mistreatment they had suffered. The loss of his father had not only an emotional impact on Dostoevesky, but seriously affected his financial stability. He was left with little money and few friends. Despite these hardships, Dostoevesky graduated as a Russian military engineer in 1841. Dostoevesky's first novel

80. Biography Of Dostoevsky
dostoevsky, fyodor. The Brothers Karamazov. Translated by Pevear, Richardand Volokhonsky, Larissa. dostoevsky, fyodor. The Brothers Karamazov.
http://community.middlebury.edu/~beyer/courses/previous/ru351/bio.shtml
Biography of Dostoevsky "Life is in ourselves and not in the external," writes Fyodor Dostoevsky in a letter to his brother dated December 22, 1849. "To be a human being among human beings, and remain one forever, no matter what misfortunes befall, not to become depressed, and not to falterthis is what life is, herein lies its task." ( The Brothers Karamazov , translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky, xii) This passage was written immediately after Dostoevsky underwent the traumatic experience that Tsar Nicholas I ordered for several prisoners condemned to death for supporting the expression of free thought within the Russian statea mock execution in Semyonovsky Square, a staged performance so terrifyingly real that it induced insanity within one of the author's fellow prisoners. ( The Brothers Karamazov , translated by Garnett, x) The quote is evidence of Dostoevsky's strength of character; his would be a difficult lifeliving in bleak poverty, he would helplessly watch as many of the people closest to him died from the ailments of the poor. It also exposes the significant flaw common to some of his characters and tragic heroesthrough despair, and weakness before the weight of misfortune, they falter, and commit barbaric acts that render them unfit to operate within the context of humanity. This is the case with both Baklushkin and Shishkov from The House of the Dead , as well as with Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment His sentence was commuted to four years in prison and four years of army service. His prison experiences, as well as his life after prison among the urban poor of Russia, would provide a vivid backdrop for much of his later work. Released from his imprisonment and service by 1858, he began a fourteen-year period of furious writing, in which he published many significant texts. Among these are:
