A LITERARY C H A M E L E O N
Carole Nelson Douglas
"Her fine Sherlockian novels and her Midnight Louie books have made her a genuine mystery star. Pick one up and see why." Ed Gorman, Mystery Scene
The author of 37 novelsmainstream, mystery fantasy science fiction and romance/women's fiction , Carole Nelson Douglas was an award-winning journalist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press until moving to Texas in 1984 to write fiction full time. In fact, she "found" Midnight Louie in the classified ads in 1973 and wrote a feature article on the real-life alley cat long before she began writing novels or Louie returned as a feline supersleuth with his own newsletter, Midnight Louie's Scratching Post-Intelligencer
Carole the child loved the Sherlock Holmes stories, but the adult found something missing: strong women. That literary lack drives her multi-genre odyssey: "I began Amberleigh, my first published novel, in college because I was fed up with the wimpy heroines of then-popular Gothics," she says. "Since then, I've merrily reformed the fiction genres, reinventing women as realistic protagonists. Of course, creating true women means creating true men as partners and co-protagonists. I like writing popular and genre fiction because it's so influential; it forms attitudes that shape society." Many Douglas novels have received awards and appeared on various bestseller lists; her mystery short fiction appears in numerous anthologies, including The Year's 25 Best Crime and Mystery Stories

    Carole Nelson Douglas

Not many people find their calling at four years of age. Of course, the very young Carole Nelson Douglas never guessed providing food and overnight shelter to stray animals would prove a necessary step towards writing bestsellers in mystery, fantasy and romance. She just wanted a cat. Eventually, she got her cat and much more. Talking to Crescent Blues , Douglas reflects on her many writing lives, her series, her satire, and a four-legged shamus named Louie. Crescent Blues: When you first started writing fiction, did you ever dream you'd be writing so much about a big, black tomcat? Carole Nelson Douglas: From my first novels, I made sure that animals were in my books because they play a large part in my life, and always have, and because I thought their presence, even if just as background figures, made fiction more realistic. In my very first novel

Ghastly crimes committed by a bloodthirsty fiend calling himself "Jack the Ripper" horrified Victorian London in the late 1880s. Despite their best efforts, Scotland Yard's finest never solved the murders of "Saucy Jack's" victims nine prostitutes from the stews of Whitechapel. Fast forward a few months to find a restless Irene Adler and her faithful companion Nell Huxleigh at home in the suburbs of Paris. Irene's beloved husband Godfrey Norton travels somewhere in Europe on business for the Baron de Rothschild. Distraction arrives in the form of two French gendarmes. Irene gladly accompanies them. Not about to be left behind, Nell (disapproving as usual) tags along. Nell soon wishes she hadn't. For the gendarmes escort Irene and Nell to a house of ill repute and worse, to a room in this maison de rendevous that more nearly resembles an abattoir than a scene for seduction. The savaged remains of two prostitutes lie scattered over the opulent room barely recognizable as human except for their shoes and bits of clothing.

CHAPEL NOIR by Carole Nelson Douglas
A NOVEL OF SUSPENSE FEATURING IRENE ADLER, SHERLOCK HOLMES, AND JACK THE RIPPER
Forge, October 2001 Irene Adler and her sidekick Nell Huxleigh are visiting Paris when Irene is called to Paris. Two young prostitutes have been murdered and the deaths risk implicating the Prince of Wales and the Baron Rothchildworse, the method of murder is highly reminiscent of the recent Jack the Ripper killings in London. Irene feels compelled to investigate using a combination of Holmes-like deduction and female intuition. What she finds is evidence that Jake the Ripper was not a solitary madman, but something more, something with purpose, and that Jack the Ripper certainly did not kill himself in London but survived to terrorize France. Sometimes working in conjunction with, and sometimes in partnership with the vain Sherlock Holmes himself, Irene and Nell, along with Irene's adopted second sidekick Pink, adopt any manner of disguises to discover the truth about the Ripper, including whether Holmes himself might have been the crazed killer. Huxleigh, the primary narrative voice, adopts a generally amusing air of condescension, conformance to society's (Victorian) rules, and British superiority while Adler represents the rule-breaking genius. Author Carole Nelson Douglas blends a nice mixture of female fashion, rules of convention, and exciting action in CHAPEL NOIR. The rivalry between Adler and Holmes is true to the original description of Adler in

    A MIDNIGHT LOUIE MYSTERY
FORGE, May 2002 Midnight Louie, a black cat and private detective, intends to help his 'roommate' find the killers who have littered Las Vegas with their victims. With the sometimes doubtful assistance of his 'daughter,' and with support from the big cats who work with a Vegas magician, Louie manages to track down some cluesbut will Temple Barr and her erstwhile lover Max Kinsella be able to put them together. And in the meantime, will ex-priest Matt Devine ever make a move on Temple, or any woman. And will cop C. R. Molina get off Max's case for long enough to determine what is really happening in Vegas? Author Carole Nelson Douglas's "Cat" stories ( see other BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by this author ) deliver a multivolume mystery with the loose ends in one story continuing on into the next. In CAT IN A MIDNIGHT CHOIR, some of the threads start to pull together. A mysterious 13th sign of the zodiac points the way at something more potent than high-school occult and the stripper-killer finally gets his come-uppance, but the deeper mysteries remain unsolved. Indeed, ex-terrorist and crazy woman Kathleen O'Connor (aka Kitty the Cutter) is more dangerous than ever in her attempts to make Matt abandon his most deeply felt beliefs. Fans of the Midnight Louie series will be overjoyed to see this addition to the corpusand CAT IN A MIDNIGHT CHOIR is a good one, moving forward the extended plot, providing its own nuggets of mystery, and presenting lots of Carole Nelson Douglas's quips and wry insights into humanity (only sometimes as seen from the cat's eye). For those not yet exposed to the series, it might make sense to start with the earlier novels as CHOIR is very much a (superior) middle book.

PW Talks with Carole Nelson Douglas by M.M. Hall 4/22/2002
    PW Forecasts > Fiction
PW: What inspired you to create Midnight Louie? CND: I wrote a story about the first real-life Louie [in the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota] and his rescue. He was remarkable, simply by being a motel cat [in Palo Alto, Calif.]. Stray animals in his situation usually starve and die quickly. He was doing so well, eating the motel's fancy koi that are worth $1,800 apiece. The motel management was going to send him to the pound to be killed, until a woman flew him home to save his life. Essentially he was going to be punished for being a good survivor. PW: In Cat in a Midnight Choir [see review p. 53], the love triangle of Temple, Matt and Max continues. Will Temple ever decide between them, or will she stick with Louie?
