Contact us The subjects that would fire Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s enthusiasm for the rest of her life first appeared in her short fiction published in the 1920s. Florida’s most celebrated environmentalist, the author of The Everglades: River of Grass , wrote even then about protecting South Florida’s fragile ecosystem and the state’s endangered species, about the dangers of short-sighted land development, and about Florida history.
The nine stories in this first collection take place in a scattering of South Florida settingsMiami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, the Everglades—and reveal the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers.
Editor Kevin McCarthy relates each story to Douglas’s life and points out the autobiographical touches which surface frequently in her stories. He is the author of several books, including: Florida Stories Florida Lighthouses , and More Florida Stories

People: Marjory Stoneman Douglas: A Lifelong Passion For Preserving The Environment
By Colby Stong Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an environmentalist who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, was an honored guest at a ceremony last month to dedicate a bronze sculpture by Philadelphia artist Eric Berg at the entrance to the Everglades National Park Royal Palm Visitor's Center in Florida. The life-size statue, which depicts a Florida panther, also honors landscape architect Ernest F. Coe (1886-1951), who conceived the idea of an Everglades national park in 1928. It is estimated that fewer than 50 of the once-plentiful panthers now remain in the state. Douglas has devoted more than 60 years to conservationist causes such as protecting the panther and preserving the Everglades. In 1970, she founded the Friends of the Everglades, a grass-roots organization that she still serves as president. Friends of the Everglades, a group of research scientists, engineers, and concerned citizens, was founded with the goal of fostering coexistence between human and natural environmental systems. The group has helped to block construction of an airport in the marshland, force the closing of two drainage canals, and strengthen restrictions on real estate developers. Douglas got her first look at the Everglades around 1919. Born in 1890 in Minneapolis, she was raised in Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College in 1912. Three years later, she moved to Miami and began to work for a newspaper (the News-Record) edited by her father, Frank Stoneman.

A passionate, articulate, and tireless voice for the environment for most of her 108 years on this earth, Marjory Stoneman Douglas left behind a legacy unparalleled in the history of conservation: Everglades National Park. In the 1920s, Douglas wrote editorials urging Everglades protections, and in the 1930s and 1940s, she lobbied on the state and federal level for designation of the area as a national park. But it was the publication of her now-famous book, The Everglades: River of Grass , in 1947 that transformed the national consciousness. Later that year, she watched as an honored guest while President Truman dedicated Everglades National Park. Douglas founded the nonprofit group Friends of the Everglades in 1969, and spent many years traveling throughout the state, rallying support for the protection of the south Florida wetland and speaking out against people and industries that threatened it. Well beyond her 100th birthday, Douglas continued her grassroots effort to inform, outrage, and inspire others to action, becoming a beloved symbol of the Everglades she dedicated her life to protecting. In her declining years, she continued to raise awareness of the damage that misguided "replumbing" efforts and unwise development had wrought on the Everglades and challenged the nation to fix these mistakes and return the ecosystem to health. Her challenge has been taken up by the National Wildlife Federation and other groups working in support of an historic effort to protect and restore this unique American treasure.

Everyone who loves the Everglades recognizes the unique contribution that Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) made to the continuing effort to enhance the remains of what once was a near perfect jewel of a natural system. I first met the extraordinary Marjory in 1960 on my return to Florida from military service. She was on one of her then frequent forays up the east coast of Florida, spinning her tale of the Everglades as a system. She described the destruction that was being implemented by the Army Corps of Engineers as they proceeded with the congressionally-authorized Central and South Florida Control Plan. The Everglades was being walled in, its boundaries dramatically shrunk. It was being unnaturally drained; its lifeline of fresh, clean water was imperiled. At the time, I felt that Marjory had gone too far. But years later, having served 14 years on the South Florida Water Management District, I am convinced that Marjory was right. Sugar production in Florida has made for incredible wealth among a small group of investors and, in my opinion, is the cause of political influence that is being misused.

Environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas Dies at 108; She Led the
Fight To Preserve the Florida Everglades
MIAMI (AP) - Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the feisty, tireless grande dame of
the Florida Everglades who led the fight to preserve her "river of grass,"
died Thursday. She was 108.
Mrs. Douglas, slowed in recent years by blindness, hearing difficulties and
other problems, died at 6:15 a.m. EDT, said Phil Hubbart, whose wife Martha was personal secretary to Mrs. Douglas. Her cremated remains will be scattered over the portion of the Everglades National Park that bears her name, said William T. Muir, an attorney and family friend. "The years caught up with her," he said, when asked the cause of death. A "non-religious" memorial commemoration of her life's work will be held at the park at a time in the future, Muir said.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Collection
Marjory Stoneman Douglas has campaigned for the preservation and conservation of the Florida Everglades. Her book The Everglades River of Grass , published in 1947, is a landmark volume. Douglas founded the Friends of the Library and has close ties with the Friends of the Everglades, an organization working to promote public awareness and to gain state support toward the preservation of the Everglades. Florida named its Department of Natural Resources Building after Mrs. Douglas. Over the years Douglas has donated a number of materials to the Library including her personal papers. Most of the 19 maps in this collection are of Florida and cover various subjects. Among them are: "The Everglades Conservation Areas," by the South Florida Water Management District, 1977; "Vegetation map of Southern Florida," by John H. Davis Jr., 1943; "Map of Florida," by J. Lee Williams, New York, lithographed by Greene & McGowran, 1837; and "Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project," 1966 (D.O. file no. 400-24,979).

Description This collection of interviews, conducted by the Office of Student Affairs in 1986, was used to produce Sixty Years of Achievement , a documentary film celebrating the University of Miami's 60th Anniversary. The tapes contain over sixty hours of footage that do not appear in the documentary, and cover topics as disparate as the founding of the university, campus life during the 1920s, WWII, and student activism during the turbulent 1960s and early 70s. Many of the interviews move beyond campus concerns, using the University as a window to understanding South Florida's history more broadly. Dennis Gaffney, a former University of Miami Office of Student Affairs employee, conducted most of the interviews. List of Interviews Below is a finding aid for the University of Miami 60th Anniversary Collection. Each entry is listed by tape number and by interviewee name. Many of the interviews are long and consist of multiple tapes. Descriptions of each tape are also provided, often listing important people, institutions, dates, and events that are mentioned in the interview. Also included in the interview descriptions are the interview lengths, the formats in which the interviews exist, and whether or not the library has a release forms for specific interviews.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, grand dame of the Everglades, dead at 108
By ERIC STAATS, Staff Writer It was hard to say no to Marjory Stoneman Douglas. At least it was for longtime Golden Gate resident Franklin Adams when the pioneer of Everglades preservation asked him to be the first chairman of the Collier County chapter of her Friends of the Everglades in 1971. By that time, Adams and Douglas had known each other for more than a decade, having started an association that would last until her death Thursday at her Coconut Grove home. She was 108. Southwest Florida environment advocates added their accolades Thursday for the woman whose legacy they say stretches beyond the wilderness she championed. Adams remembered her more simply. "I was just a friend of Marjory's, and we're going to miss her," he said. Adams, a former chairman of the Florida Wildlife Federation, met Douglas when he was enrolled in a course on Florida natural history she was teaching at Miami Dade Junior College in 1958. They discovered their families had mutual friends, he said. He learned more from her than natural history, though.

Environmental Legacy
The untiring efforts of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a writer and environmentalist who fell in love with the Everglades in the early 1900's, were instrumental to protecting the Everglades existence.
As an assistant editor of The Miami Herald, Douglas wrote editorials urging protection of Florida's unique regional character in the face of rapid commercial development. After leaving the paper in 1923, she devoted herself to her literary career, writing extensively about south Florida conservation. In 1947, Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass as part of The Rivers of America Series. This book, a guide and a natural/political history, not only raised awareness regarding the Everglades but also helped to diminish the national misperception of wetlands as swamps. Still in print, Everglades: River of Grass sells more than 10,000 copies a year.

'Mother of the Everglades' dead at 108
Marjory Stoneman Douglas May 14, 1998 Web posted at: 12:57 p.m. EDT (1657 GMT) MIAMI (CNN) Before World War I began, Marjory Stoneman Douglas began a life-long fight that would keep South Florida at the center of political and environmental controversy for most of this century: the battle to save the Everglades Douglas dedicated her life to urging people to stop thinking of the Everglades as a wasteland to be conquered; to think of the "River of Grass" instead as a paradise to be preserved. The embattled wetland lost its "Mother" early Thursday when Douglas died in her sleep at age 108. Her body will be cremated and her ashes spread over the portion of Everglades National Park that bears her name, said Douglas' attorney and friend, William T. Muir.
"It's not too late or we wouldn't be working. We simply cannot let everything be destroyed. We can't do that, not if we want water. We've got to take care of what we have."
"The years caught up with her," Muir said.

The book, one of The Rivers of America Series , continues to be in print, selling more than 10,000 copies a year. Since this title emerged, the area has been popularly known as the "River of Grass" although many new residents do not even know where the name originated. Also, in 1947, Mrs. Douglas helped lead the campaign to have the central core of the Everglades preserved as Everglades National Park. In 1969, Mrs. Douglas spearheaded The Friends of the Everglades, a conservation organization of 5,000 members, a testament to the importance of the Everglades. Membership still costs only one dollar a year. The biggest honor the physically small woman received during her lifetime was this: in December 1997, a 1.3 million-acre wilderness area in the Everglades was dedicated in her name on the Park's fiftieth anniversary.
