Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness Area Year Established: Size: 1,296,500 acres
Description: A river six inches deep and 50 miles wide flows with imperceptible slowness across southern Florida, a "river of grass" forming the heart of the Everglades. From its birth along the shores of Lake Okeechobee, the river drops only 15 feet on its long voyage to saltwater at Florida Bay. Upon the water of this river the life of southern Florida depends. Here you'll find a land of fragile lushness, of the ever-present alligator, of multitudes of colorful birds including flamingoes, roseate spoonbills, egrets and herons, pelicans, cranes and hawks, ibises, storks, frigatebirds, kites and skimmers . . . a land of indescribable wonder. Primarily a marsh of scattered tall grasses covering about 1.4 million acres, Everglades National Park contains only a part of the watery expanse called "everglades." Most of the park has been designated Wilderness, originally named Everglades Wilderness with a name change in 1997. Despite the refreshment its name implies, life in the Everglades hangs by a wet thread, the freshwater required to sustain the vast and varied species being drastically blocked by human intervention. Life in the Everglades comes nowhere near the abundance it once demonstrated. About one-third of the park is comprised of the shallow waters of Florida Bay with its tiny keys. Most of these small islands are nesting sites for birds. The saltwater teems with fish, porpoises, sea turtles, sharks and manatees.

  • Marjory Stoneman Douglas
  • Defender of the Everglades Marjory Stoneman Douglas: Born April 7, 1890 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, graduated from Wellesley with straight A's with the elected honor of "Class Orator." That title proved to be prophetic. In 1915, following a brief and calamitous marriage, she arrived in Miami, working for her father at the Miami Herald. She worked first as a society reporter, then as an editorial page columnist, and later established herself as a writer of note. Here she took on the fight for feminism, racial justice, and conservation long before these causes became popular. She was ahead of her time in recognizing her need for independence and solitude, yet never considered herself entirely a feminist, saying: "I'd like to hear less talk about men and women and more talk about citizens." Her book, The Everglades: River of Grass, published in 1947 the year Everglades National Park was established has become the definitive description of the natural treasure she fought so hard to protect. After several reprints, the revised edition was published in 1987, to draw attention to the continuing threats unresolved to "her river." In the 1950s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rose to the top of her list of enemies. In a major construction program, a complex system of canals, levees, dams, and pump stations was built to provide protection from seasonal flooding to former marsh land now being used for agriculture and real estate development. Long before scientists became alarmed about the effects on the natural ecosystems of south Florida, Mrs. Douglas was railing at officials for destroying wetlands, eliminating sheetflow of water, and upsetting the natural cycles upon which the entire system depends.

    Nine Florida Stories by
    Marjory Stoneman Douglas
Edited by Kevin McCarthy "A collection of tales boiling with real estate dealers, egret poachers, rumrunners, mango growers, sportsmen, land grubbers, murderers, and mosquitoes. First printed in The Saturday Evening Post during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, these stories constitute a rip-snorting glimpse back to a South Florida that now exists only in memory." Miami Herald "Reflects the same concerns found in her better-known nonfiction worka fascination with the beauty of Florida and a warning against its imminent destruction." Tallahassee Democrat The subjects that would fire Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s enthusiasm for the rest of her life first appeared in her short fiction published in the 1920s. Florida’s most celebrated environmentalist, the author of The Everglades: River of Grass, wrote even then about protecting South Florida’s fragile ecosystem and the state’s endangered species, about the dangers of shortsighted land development, and about Florida history. The nine stories in this first collection take place in a scattering of South Florida settingsMiami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, the Everglades—and reveal the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas A Message From Marjory Stoneman Douglas It is indeed a great honor to have the Marjory Stoneman Douglas/Biscayne Nature Center bear my name. The promise that the nature center brings to Dade County is exciting. The north end of Key Biscayne, with its mangroves, sand dunes, fossilized rock reef, ocean, and uplands, offers a unique opportunity to study the wonders of nature. The relationship of one natural system to another is a microcosm of South F1orida's coastal environment. In order to survive, its interdependence must not be obstructed by man. It is my hope that all who come to visit the nature center will leave with a better understanding and appreciation of this area. I wish great success for the MSD/Biscayne Nature Center and look forward to its opening. Sincerely,
Marjory Stoneman Douglas "Housed in a hot dog stand"
An open letter from Theodora Long, Executive Director

Since 1972, I've been going around making speeches on the Everglades. No matter how poor my eyes are I can still talk. I'll talk about the Everglades at the drop of a hat. Sometimes, I tell them more than they wanted to know.
    Marjory Stoneman Douglas
First Lady of the Everglades Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998)
Marjory Stoneman Douglas was an environmental activist before the term was even coined, and her name is synonymous with the Everglades , the vast subtropical wilderness preserve in South Florida. Marjory, who was born in Minneapolis, moved to Florida in 1915 and went to work for the Miami Herald newspaper. Starting out as a society reporter, Marjory quickly transitioned to weightier topics. By the 1920s, she was writing about feminism, racial justice, and conservation, calling for the Everglades' preservation as a national park. In 1947, after five years of research, Marjory published The Everglades: River of Grass Friends of the Everglades , a grassroots conservation organization, and served as its president for many years. The organization continues her work today. Marjory was born on April 7, 1890, and died on May 14, 1998, at the age of 108. Her ashes are scattered in the Everglades she worked so hard to preserve.
