Click on the Red text to hear the story. But the Grinch,Who lived just north of Who -ville, Did NOT! The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes too small. But,
Whatever the reason, His heart or his shoes, He stood there on Christmas Eve, hating the Whos Staring down from his cave with a sour, Grinchy frown At the warm lighted windows below in their town. For he knew every Who down in Who -ville beneath Was busy now, hanging a mistletoe wreath. "And they're hanging their stockings!" he snarled with a sneer, "Tomorrow is Christmas! -Dr. Seuss There was no time for play.
This was no time for fun.
This was no time for games.
There was work to be done. All that deep,
Deep, deep snow,
All that snow had to go. When our mother went Down to the town for the day, She said, "somebody has to Clean all this away. Somebody, SOMEBODY Has to, you see." Then she picked out two Somebodies. Sally and me. (The Cat in the Hat Comes Back) You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.... OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights. You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead. The Butter Battle Book

Review: In classic Dr. Seuss fashion, this cold war era book examines the mentality of the arms race and how minor differences between people can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This story of the Zooks and the Yooks will delight children of all ages, all the while exposing the darker side of human nature. From a man who started out as a political cartoonist, this book captures Dr. Seuss' views of the cold war and begs the question "do you eat your bread butter side up or down?".

    Dr. Seuss Trivia Game

In addition to normal trivia questions, this game includes questions related to various Dr. Seuss "themes." Any true fan of Dr. Seuss will love this game, and casual fans will walk away with more knowledge than they probably thought possible about Dr. Seuss. Including both easier and harder questions, this game will delight the entire family from its youngest member to Grandma and Grandpa.

LESSON PLANS FOR DR. SEUSS WEEK These plans are developed to be used in a second grade class. They will be used during the month of March when the school is preparing to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day. The standard that is being addressed is: Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process. To meet the benchmarks, second grade students will know basic sight words, demonstrate comprehension of simple stories, and demonstrate knowledge of story elements. This will also meet the criteria of balanced literacyreading to with and by students. This will be a week long activity that will cross several curricular areas. The teacher will do the initial reading to the class of several of Dr. Seuss books. Class discussion will ensue, the internet will be used, and graphing and word problem work will occur during math lessons. The beginning of the second week will be the celebration school wide of Dr. Seuss's birthday. All of the books that the teacher has read to the students or any Dr. Seuss books that she is not using as part of this plan will be available for the children to read during seat work time. Day 1. Teacher will initiate a discussion of Dr. Seuss. As a class the children will complete a KWLW chart with the students on what they know about Dr. Seuss. Discussion will continue with what books of Seuss's that they are familiar with and take a straw poll of their favorite book. The teacher will then read And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street. For seat work/computer time that day students will work in pairs (high ability reader with lower ability readers) to answer the questions on the scavenger hunt. The teacher will have the computer opened to the internet site http://www.randomhouse.com/seussville. See attachment for scavenger hunt.
