Hooray for Dr. Seuss! A Favorite for Generations Children may not know his real name, but they know what they like. And what they like is Dr. Seuss. The story of Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Geisel , is an interesting one. The impact he had on books for children is an enduring one. On March 2, school children across United States and beyond will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, with skits, birthday cakes, and reading from his books. Theodor Geisel was born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925, but rather than earning a doctorate in literature at Oxford University as he originally intended, he returned to the United States in 1927. During the next two decades he worked for several magazines, worked in advertising, and served in the army during World War II. He was stationed in Hollywood and won Oscars for his work on war documentaries. By that time, Geisel (as Dr. Seuss) had already written several children's books, and he continued to do so. His first book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" was published in 1937. Dr. Seuss once said, "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." Dr. Seuss' books certainly provide that for children. His witty rhymes, engaging plots, and imaginative

87. Dr. Seuss Memorial Sculpture Garden
After all that fantasy, here's a little reality; dr. seuss at work at his drawingtable. Although it's a little strange to call a sculpture reality.

Photos of the Dr. Seuss Memorial
On June 7 2002 Arlene and I went to Springfield for the rubber stamp convention. After setting up, we headed into downtown Springfield to seek out the memorial to Dr. Seuss which had opened just a week earlier. Here are our pictures. Bear in mind, though, that it's sculpture and needs to be viewed in person. The feel of the open book underfoot and the scale of the whole thing are integral parts of the experience.
About the first thing I saw at the memorial was Sam-I-Am running towards me bearing a big plate of green eggs and ham. Here you see him from both sides.
Also running toward me were Thing One and Thing Two.
All of the above are part of Horton Court, which features a full-sized Horton the Elephant and Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose as well as several Cat In The Hat characters, all springing out of a giant walk-through book.
This kid seems to have the right idea.
After all that fantasy, here's a little reality; Dr. Seuss at work at his drawing table. Although it's a little strange to call a sculpture reality. It's a question of how many levels of fantasy you're dealing with at any time. That's the Cat in the Hat, his muse, standing behind him. You can see the whole thing in the background of the previous picture. Note the chair legs and what's in back of the chair. Maybe there's always a level of fantasy involved when you talk about Dr. Seuss.

89. Seuss! At The WRHS
With his whimsical rhymes and memorable characters, dr. seuss revolutionizedthe way children learn to read and experience literature. The seuss!
http://www.wrhs.org/current/seuss.htm
November 2 - April 27 (extended by popular demand!) The Western Reserve Historical Society is proud to share with families the fun of reading through its new exhibit Seuss! With his whimsical rhymes and memorable characters, Dr. Seuss revolutionized the way children learn to read and experience literature. The Seuss! exhibit celebrates Dr. Seuss's tradition of silliness and make-believe, while at the same time promoting literacy. Seuss! invites visitors to step into the pages of a Dr. Seuss book through life-size scenes from well-loved classics, including The Cat in the Hat Green Eggs and Ham There's A Wocket in My Pocket! and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish . Dynamic murals with quotes from these books emphasize the connection between the exhibit's playful activities and the written word. Oh, the places you'll go and the things you can think in Seuss! Explore the house where the Cat in the Hat visited, where Thing One and Thing Two look for rainy-day fun and the Cat's clean-up machine makes cleaning up at least as much fun as making a mess. Search for Jertains in the curtains and Nupboards in the cupboards, and cook up imaginary culinary creations in the Green Eggs and Ham kitchen. Then climb in and steer the Green Eggs and Ham boat. You can go "bump, bump," when you ride on the seven-hump Wump of Gump. And even the smallest visitor can pretend-swim in the One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish pond.

T heodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2nd, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925, and went on to Oxford University in England. He returned to the USA in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge , the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. The "Boids and Beasties," which he drew for a series of Judge stories, were precursors of the strangely shaped, silly animals that were to become the beloved Loraxes, Whos, and Zooks of later stories. In some of his works, he had made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" In 1936 on the way to a vaction in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with

About Dr. Seuss
Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, spent his lifetime dreaming about many different creatures and silly ways to name them. At first, his main goal was to make people laugh and then he turned his talents toward teaching preschoolers to read.
In 1936, Geisel decided to travel. On his trip, he was influenced to write his first book: AND TO THINK I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET. He presented it to 43 different publishers who all rejected it. Finally, in 1937, he got a friend to publish it for him. This was the first time he used his pen name, Dr. Seuss (Seuss was his mother's maiden name). During World War II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscars for HITLER LIVES and DESIGN FOR DEATH). He also created a cartoon called "Gerald McBoing-Boing" which also won him an Oscar. In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble learning to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important. The publisher asked Geisel to cut the list to 250 words (the publisher's idea of how many words at one time a first-grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him, published THE CAT IN THE HAT, which was an instant success.

Name: Email: If you have ever read Green Eggs and Ham The Cat In The Hat , or any of the dozens of other books written and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel, you may think you are familiar with the work of the man who delighted millions as "Dr. Seuss." But the wildly imaginative creations included in the Secret Art Collection show a previously unseen dimension of Geisel's art. These fantastic images have the inimitable style of Geisel's alter ego Dr. Seuss, frequently depicting outlandish creatures in otherworldly settings. The puckish Seuss humor is also in evidence, as well as the insight that often gave his stories deeper meaning. But these painting break new ground, using dazzling rainbow of hues not seen in the primary-color palette of Geisel's books for children.
