22. OVERSEAS

OVERSEAS
Extracts from previous Newsletters. Issue 14 - July 1991
THE HARDES SAGA
In my article for Newsletter 10 I mooted the possibility-albeit remote-that the George Hardess referred to in the "Hardess Family History" (Newsletter 7) was a Hardes von Altstein, since his arrival in London in 1750 coincided with the demise of that aristocratic family in Germany. In Newsletter 11 I reported on my meeting with Martina Hardes who now lives in Munich but comes from Sauerland. She told me that several families by that name lived in the Sauerland area, so I decided to find out something about the local nobility's estates to see if there was a connection with the Hardes von Altstein. The name Hardes is not recorded in the register of noble estates, but Harde appears as the name of an old aristocratic family which, like the Hardes von Altstein, became extinct some time in the eighteenth century. There may be a connection between the two families, the "s" in the name being dropped (like, possibly, the "re" in Hardres.
The Harde family is recorded in 1562 as owner of a castle, Hulshoff, near Munster. The moated building dates from 1545, and a neo-Gothic chapel was added in 1870. The main building is of red brick decorated with lighter-coloured stone. The two wings lie at right angles, the parat overlooking the front garden being built of sandstone. There are two square defence towers, and a mill regulates the moat's water level, In 1789 the interior was renovated, probably at the time the estate was taken over by the local Droste family. This wealthy noble family played an important role in the local history. Annette von Droste-Hulshoff, one of Germany's most famous poets, was born there in 1797. Until her father's death in 1825 Annett lived at the castle, and she found the surrounding countryside a constant inspiration for her work.

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~gjdemko/deutsch.html
The Mystery Auf Deutsch The Art of the Mystery Story Life and Times of the Detective Story refers disdainfully to "continental [detective story] writers" as "quite inferior"! These "experts" have clearly not read German mysteries or are chauvinists of the worst sort! The earliest crime literature in the German lands were true crime reports published from 1730 to 1865 and popularly known as "Der Pitaval" after the French author of the original publications, F. Guyot de Pitaval . It is fascinating to note that a number of the early, classic German authors anticipated the genre in some of their work. The great Schiller in his 1786 novel, Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre (Verlag der Bremer Presse, Munich, 1922) created a crime story of a sort. Similarly the renowned E.T.A. Hoffmann story Mademoiselle von Scuderi, ( (John Calder, London, 1958) published in 1842 is a melodramatic story about a crime that solves itself with the commission of a suicide. German literature specialists argue that the first genuine German mystery was penned by Adolf Mullner in 1829 and entitled Der Kaliber- Caliber- Murder in the Rue Morgue In the early part of the 20 th Century there were a few interesting crime writers including Karl Rosner ( The King , London, 1922) Dietrich Theden, and Austrian Baldwin Groller who created Detective Dagobert ( Detektiv Dagobert Taten und Abenteuer Emil and the Detectives (Doubleday, N.Y., 1950) and continued with a number of follow-ons (see for example

I regularly offer a course in the Writing Program, "Views of Berlin," which can provide an introduction to interdisciplinary German Studies. In my film course on " Constructing the Other in German Cinema" I have had students use digitized video clips in their final projects. Research Interests and Activities: My research has focused on 20th-century drama theory and practice and 19th and 20th century German women writers (Fanny Lewald, Ingeborg Drewitz, Marie Luise Kaschnitz). I have been interested in the interaction between intent, content and form in political dramas. My work on Lewald goes beyond literary questions to her advocacy for the rights of women to education and work. I am interested in women's re-writing of Greek myths.
