Daphne Du Maurier (1907-1989)
English novelist, daughter of actor Sir Gerald Du Maurier and granddaughter of novelist George Du Maurier. Born in London, educated in Paris, she lived most of her life in Cornwall, whose climate and wild, natural beauty became the backdrop for her most successful novels. Best known for period romances and adventure stories, her works include "Jamaica Inn" (1936), "Rebecca" (1938). "Frenchman's Creek" (1942) and "My Cousin Rachel" (1951). Her short story, "The Birds," was made into a film in 1963 by Alfred Hitchcock, and is, likely, to be her greatest literary legacy. It's always the right time to return to your favorite book

Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us What's your favorite book? Has it been made into a movie? Was the movie as good as the book? My all-time favorite book is "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier , published in 1938. Two years later, it was made into a fabulous four-star movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock (his first American film) staring Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier, George Sanders and Judith Anderson. It won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Cinematography. It still represents, to me, the best and most faithful adaptation of a book to a movie. The haunting first lines in the movie, narrated by Fontaine, are taken straight from the book beginning with: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." The book continues: "It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter for the way was barred to me. There was a padlock and chain upon the gate. I called in my dream to the lodge-keeper, and had no answer, and peering closer through the rusted spokes of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited." I have my mother's copy of "Rebecca." Her girlish scrawl, written in faded blue ink from a fountain pen, reads "Barbara Redfield, Christmas, 1938." Beneath her name she pasted one of her father's bookplates on the page, which reads "Ex Libris, C. Truman Redfield." Knowing that my mother, who died when I was a teen-ager, read and loved this book pleases me enormously.

Daphne du Maurier
Writer England Born 13 May 1907
Died 19 Apr 1989
Daphne du Maurier was the second daughter of the famous actor and theatre manager-producer, Sir Gerald du Maurier. She was also granddaughter of George du Maurier, the much-loved Punch artist and author of 'Trilby' and 'Peter Ibbetson'. After being educated at home with her sisters, and then in Paris, she began writing short stories and articles in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, 'The Loving Spirit', was published. Two others followed. Her reputation was established with her frank biography of her father, 'Gerald: A Portrait', and her Cornish novel, 'Jamaica Inn'. When 'Rebecca' came out in 1938 she suddenly found herself, to her great surprise, one of the most popular authors of the day. The book went into 39 English impressions in the next 20 years and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
Daphne du Maurier was made a DBE in 1969. She was married to Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning KCVO DSO. Daphne du Maurier died at her home in Cornwall. Margaret Forster wrote in a tribute to her. 'No other popular novelist has so triumphantly defied classification as Daphne du Maurier. She satisfied all the questionable criteria of popular fiction and yet satisfied too the exacting requirements of 'real literature', something very few novelists ever do.'

Though best seen from the Air the V ditches, some still over 8 feet in height, are clearly visible when viewed from the ground. Believed to be, according to Arthurian Legend the site of the Castle of the Cornish King Mark. and thus associated also with the Legend of Tristram and Iseult. Also site of a battle in the Civil War. In Daphne du Maurier's The House on the Strand the central character Dick Young finds himself transported back to the 14th Century where he witnesses the life in Tywardreath Manor.
