50. Du Maurier
The Mystery of daphne du maurier. Rummaging through an ensemble of used andunwanted books, I spotted a tattered Rebecca. Author daphne du maurier?
http://www.wildapple.co.uk/writers/icons/du Maurier.htm
The Mystery of Daphne Du Maurier Rummaging through an ensemble of used and unwanted books, I spotted a tattered Rebecca. "Is that the novel with the nameless narrator? Author Daphne du Maurier? Hmm… well, the title rings a bell." And out of the pile I bought it-this book I had once read and loved. Settling down with the book it became part of me once again. But this time I developed a curiosity for the author and my quest to discover Daphne du Maurier began. Over time, I would collect and read du Maurier's fiction, find the web site dedicated to her www.dumaurier.org and write about the Daphne du Maurier who I have sought to understand. And you have now happened upon this: my opportunity to write about the author who has held me spellbound. I first delved into the novel Rebecca at age twelve. With my mind's eye, I watched the inhabitants of the magnificent estate, Manderley-live their lives haunted by the late Madame of the house, Rebecca. What fascinated me then and now is the famed feature of Rebecca-that the new woman of the house, Maxim's second wife and the main character, bears no name-a du Maurier twist that sustains the novel's mystery even after its curtain has closed. I enjoy learning about the Du Maurier who seduces her readers into assuming fictional lives that they forget are not their own. In analyzing Daphne du Maurier, I have used the only lens available-writing. While I analyze her, I must also discuss her own life and sources of inspirations.

Introductory Notes
Daphne du Maurier was born in London on May 13, 1907. She was the daughter of Gerald (an actor) and Muriel (an actress) du Maurier. She married a military man, Maj. Frederick Arthur Browning – who was known as "Tommy" to his family and as "Boy" to his friends – on July 19, 1932. They had three children. The family moved several times as Browning was transferred to various military posts, but Daphne du Maurier lived in Cornwall for 40 years, 25 of them at the 17th century house Menabilly, which was the model for Manderley in duMaurier’s best known work, Rebecca . Daphne du Maurier died on April 19, 1989, in Cornwall.

Daphne Du Maurier(1907 - 1989) Daphne du Maurier, who was born in 1907, was the second daughter of the famous actor and theatre-manager and producer, Sir Gerald du Maurier, and the grand daughter of George du Maurier, author of Trilby and Peter Ibbetson Daphne was educated at home in London and then in Paris, where she began writing short stories and articles. Her first novel The Loving Spirit , was published in 1931. Two other novels followed. Daphne's reputation was established with her frank biography of her father, Gerald: A Portrait and her Cornish novel, Jamaica Inn. Daphne struck gold with Rebecca , which was published in 1938. The book went into thirty nine English impressions in the next twenty years and has been translated into more than twenty languages. Rebecca was also made into a highly successful film by none other than the famous 'master of suspense' Alfred Hitchcock and starred Sir Laurence Olivier in the role of Maxim de Winter. We wrote to Daphne du Maurier, who lived in the county. She was so impressed with the aims of our charity that she became our first Patron and was the first author to give permission for us to record all her works. Could it be that she felt an empathy with our listeners? In the foreword to her book, "Enchanted Cornwall" she wrote, "...I am thought of as a recluse, which suggests someone who is very lonely, but there is a difference between being lonely and being solitary"
...not everyone has that choice.

Friday 9th May - Sunday 18th May 2003
Yet another treat for us all in the area is the Daphne Du Maurier festival which takes place within the beautiful surroundings of Fowey playing host to multitude of stars. This coming year's festival, the seventh, will take place in May as usual beginning on Friday the 9th. Why not plan ahead and book your accommodation now for this prestigious event and enjoy a selection of programs and performances whilst you are down? Nearer the time we will post for you the proposed line up and a link to the official site where you will be able to book your tickets in advance and secure your chosen entertainment for your break! This year a glittering array of literary luminaries, sparkling celebrities and polished performers dazzled festival-goers with what was described as the best line-up so far. The festival took place in and around Fowey, with events in Polruan, St. Austell, Lostwithiel and Lanteglos. Each year, this community event, co-ordinated by Restormel Borough Council, increases in stature and popularity. Here is an example of those who entertained us this year: Another coup was an appearance by HELEN FIELDING, internationally renowned author of Bridget Jones Diary. This will be one of only two festival appearances this year and is bound to prove popular.
