Norman Dubie will publish his Collected and New Poems in 2001. He is the author of numerous collections of poetry, including Radio Sky and Groom Falconer. "Gently Bent to Ease Us"
for Bill Knott
The rain makers are orange and yellow, drums
Drawn with human skin
And a bone trumpet piercing everything
These second growths
Of color above the high mustard fields of the peninsula.
A cold air in banners crying to the turquoise sky.
And the poets die blowing
Flame through a heap of red twigs. The magician's
Words like waterfall beyond the saltmarsh Making a bird nervously rise Out of its poor delight in wild autumn mustard. The red plane climbs through thunderheads Dropping now to a bright city and its plateau. The mud Of the Yucatan slowing the river. Back in the thick growth oxen are farting In gladness that the plane kicks its amethyst air Carrying letters, beans and dark bricks of tea Beyond the open abattoirs of sky burial To the dead who are sweeping Abstractions from the narrow twilight streets of the city.

Ai Interviewed by Lawrence Kearney and Michael Cuddihy First published in Ironwood 12 6, no. 2 (1978) Michael Cuddihy: Ai: Well, when I was fourteen we lived in L.A. and I went to Mount Vernon Junior High. One day I saw an ad up on the board that said "Poetry Contest." The poem had to be about a historical figure. But before I could enter the contest we moved back to Tucson. But I'd discovered that I could write poetry, and I've just continued from the age of fourteen, though there wasn't much in my family life that encouraged it. Lawrence Kearney : Some of the poems in Cruelty have that quality of "last letters" for me. Ai : Maybe they do, I don't know. Sometimes I can't even remember the poems in Cruelty . I guess I don't care about them as much anymore. Kearney: I'd like to ask you about Cruelty while we're on the subject. Ai Kearney : Which poems in the book do you feel closest to? Ai: The only one I really feel close to at all is "Cuba, 1962." For me, that's the beginning of my new work, my new interest. Kearney : In what sense?
