Author Duff's brainchild combats 'booklessness' in New Zealand's underclass
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (July 5, 1998 10:15 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com ) Maori author Alan
Duff, whose novel about the violent and alcohol-drenched lives of an urban Maori underclass
stunned New Zealand, is bringing books to underprivileged children in an effort to fight social
problems. In a project called Books In Homes, begun in 1992, the author of "Once Were Warriors" has
distributed more than half a million books free to around 45,000 children in homes where there
aren't many, or possibly any books. The program aims to break the cycle of "booklessness" and in doing so, try to prevent the social
problems which Duff believes result from it. "Kids who can't read become adults who can't communicate and that's a serious disadvantage in
a world that operates on the written word," Duff said. "Once Were Warriors," which depicted the dismal plight of New Zealand's indigenous Maori
population, exploded the stereotype of the happy, haka (war dance) performing people who greet
tourists.

OUT OF THE MIST STEAM. by alan duff. reviewed by Mike Crowl. Two thingsused to strike me about alan duff's weekly newspaper column.
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/4657/book/duff.html
by Alan Duff reviewed by Mike Crowl Two things used to strike me about Alan Duff's weekly newspaper column. First, though he was passionate about his subject matter, his style lacked the sort of edge that makes the reader take notice. He seemed to write as he'd speak, without much reshaping of the words. Secondly, he was passionate week after week on the same topic: the need for the Maori people to pull themselves up out of the dust rather than waiting for anyone else to do it for them. Duff's new book is in the same vein. Though the writing is generally better than it was in the columns - there are some vivid passages, particularly in the earlier part of the book - he sometimes drifts into a shapeless mode, presenting details that made me want to skip paragraphs at a time. Do we really need to know who all the neighbours were in his childhood street? That might be of interest if they played some further part in the story. But when they're given a few sentences and then forgotten, it's like the introduction of extraneous characters into a novel. Duff is excellent in his delineation of his mother and father, a couple so contrasted that it's a puzzle to the reader as to why they ever came together. The early part of the book is worth reading for the picture he paints of his family life. We have a sense of completeness regarding the portrait of his father, but the mother, after she moves out of the family home, moves out of the book too, and we're left with little comment as to what further part she played in Duff's life. According to a photograph reproduced in this book, she was on hand when Once Were Warriors was published, but the one mention of her in the latter part of the text is when she wrote Duff a letter while he was in an English prison.

http://www.booksinhomes.org.nz/foundation.htm
The Books in Homes Programme was inspired by Alan Duff who, with the help of Christine Fernyhough, developed the idea after realising that failures in adult life often stem from childhoods spent in bookless homes. The philosophy behind the programme is simple - to break the cycle of 'booklessness'. Kids who can't read become adults who can't communicate and that's a serious disadvantage in a world that operates on the written word. The schools are selected from areas where the children are most likely to come from bookless homes. The Ministry of Education allocates schools a decile rating of between 1 and 10, according to the socio-economic status of the community in which a school is based. Books in Homes focuses on lower decile schools. Why? Because over half the parents in decile 1 catchments are without a school qualification. Furthermore, 42 percent of parents in decile 1 catchments received income support in the year preceding the 1996 Census, compared to just 7 percent for decile 10 catchment areas. Quite simply, the children from these schools are most likely to come from bookless homes. Alan's self-help philosophy is reflected by the fact that each school joins in a financial partnership with their sponsors to fund their books. The books are selected by the children themselves and are theirs to take home and keep. Each book has a sticky label which has the child's name in it as well as the name of the school and sponsor who have given the book.
