Can you explain how your poems come into being. Do you have a typical routine to the writing process?
Which of your poems would you have chosen to be in the GCSE anthology?
Many of your poems, particularly in 'Mean Time', seem to draw on auto-biographical experience and have a distinctly private and 'confessional' feel to them. Does this self-revealing ever make you feel vulnerable?
Some of your poems in 'Mean Time', such as 'The Windows', create the effect of a voice locked out of normal life. Is it this sense of being different, of being able to see life as if removed from it that makes poetry possible?
Why does poetry matter?
And what is its future?
Thank you very much Carol Ann Duffy

Carol Ann Duffy
Widely considered the leading poet in England, Duffy has already lived a very full life. She was born in Glasgow but soon immigrated with her family to Stafford, England, where she grew up. Her father and grandfather were both involved in politics, and her father stood for parliament as a Labour candidate during the Thatcher era. Raised Catholic, Duffy attended a convent school where, at sixteen, she met the poet Adrian Henri. Despite the fact that he was 23 years her senior, she began a relationship with him that took her to the University of Liverpool and a degree in philosophy (although she nearly missed gaining entrance to college by mistaking the time of her A-Level English exam). After leaving school Duffy moved to London, where she decided to make her living as a professional poet. Her first book, Standing Female Nude , was published in 1985. A tireless round of readings and a willingness to go into schools and teach led to her growing popularity among many people not previously considered poetry fans. Duffy gained a reputation as a 'people's poet' that was only increased by controversy in later years. The early nineties brought the height of her success with the publication of Mean Time , poems about a bad breakup that are now required reading for those same English A-levels she almost flunked.

C arol Ann Duffy 'War Photographer' In his darkroom he is finally alone with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows. The only light is red and softly glows, as though this were a church and he a priest preparing to intone a mass. Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh. All flesh is grass. He has a job to do. Solutions slop in trays beneath his hands which did not tremble then though seem to now. Rural England. Home again to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel, to fields which don't explode beneath the feet of running children in a nightmare heat. Something is happening. A stranger's features faintly start to twist before his eyes, a half formed ghost. He remembers the cries of this man's wife, how he sought approval without words to do what someone must and how the blood stained into foreign dust. A hundred agonies in black-and-white from which his editor will pick out five or six for Sunday's supplement. The reader's eyeballs prick with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers. From the aeroplane he stares impassively at where he earns his living and they do not care.

The soundtrack then was a litany - candlewick
bedspread three piece suite display cabinet -
and stiff-haired wives balanced their red smiles,
passing the catalogue. Pyrex. A tiny ladder
ran up Mrs Barr's American Tan leg, sly
like a rumour. Language embarrassed them. The terrible marriages crackled, cellophane
round polyester shirts, and then The Lounge
would seem to bristle with eyes, hard
as the bright stones in engagement rings,
and sharp hands poised over biscuits as a word
was spelled out. An embarrassing word, broken to bits, which tensed the air like an accident. This was the code I learnt at my mother's knee, pretending to read, where no-one had cancer, or sex, or debts, and certainly not leukaemia, which no-one could spell. This year a mass grave of wasps bobbed in a jam-jar; a butterfly stammered itself in my curious hands. a boy in the playground, I said, told me to fuck off; and a thrilled, malicious pause salted my tongue like an imminent storm. Then uproar. I'm sorry, Mrs Barr, Mrs Hunt, Mrs Emery
