"Poetry, like love, depends on a kind of recognition.
So often with Duffy does the reader say, 'Yes, that's it exactly,'
that she could well become the representative poet of the present day."

The Other Country Mean Time
The first four books by one of the UK's bestselling and best-loved poets feature such poems as "Warming Her Pearls", "Prayer" and "Valentine", representing the work that has made her reputation as one of our finest poets. Prayer Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer utters itself. So, a woman will lift her head from the sieve of her hands and stare at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift. Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth enters our hearts, that small familiar pain; then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth in the distant Latin chanting of a train. Pray for us now. Grade I piano scales console the lodger looking out across a Midlands town. Then dusk, and someone calls a child's name as though they named their loss. Darkness outside. Inside, the radio's prayer - Rockall. Malin. Dogger. Finisterre.

35. CAROL ANN DUFFY In Conversation With Erica Wagner
LONDON, MARCH 19th28th, 1999. carol ann duffy in conversation with Erica Wagner.at WATERSTONEÂ’S, Camden High Street, London NW1; 23rd March. By Adam Wilson.
http://www.skoob.com/webzine/DUFFY.htm
THE WORD /FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE LONDON, MARCH 19th-28th, 1999 CAROL ANN DUFFY in conversation with Erica Wagner at WATERSTONE’S, Camden High Street, London NW1; 23rd March. By Adam Wilson T HANKFULLY the WORD festival was pretty even-handed in its coverage of both prose literature and poetry. One of the highlights of the poetry on offer was a sold-out hour-or-so with Carol Ann Duffy, a poet(ess?) with an already established reputation recently complemented by the emergence of her witty re-interpretations of Classical myths from what some might call a ‘feminist’ viewpoint. In The World’s Wife and The Pamphlet , Duffy explores the worlds of Mrs Aesop, Mrs Faust and Queen Kong. As new work, the reading concentrated on these poems, with a liberal sprinkling of older personal favourites. Duffy’s award-winning work has a multiplicity of voices which are, ironically, all her own. Despite her latest work revolving around Classical and later myths - Icarus, Faust, and Tiresias - it is essentially autobiographical work, reflecting her personal feelings towards contemporary themes within the framework of the myth itself. The rhythm of the words is the rhythm of speech. Having been born in Scotland (1955) then moving south at the age of six, Duffy had to cope with a change in her mother tongue and its inherent changes in accent. One of the main points in Duffy’s philosophy behind poetry is its ‘inherent economy of narrative’. This ‘advantage’, absent from prose literature, is one unique to the poetic form. A carefully deliberated choice of words juxtaposed to form a stanza can convey the same amount, or more, information, thought or feeling, as a whole paragraph of prose or a lengthy sentence. In many instances, this economy is more satisfying to the reader (or listener) as it often dispenses with the convoluted traits prose may exhibit in its getting-to-the-point. According to Duffy, poetry can do ‘anything’ and enjoys an expressive freedom not available to prose or theatre. Having worked as a dramatist and a game-show and joke writer, Duffy must be in a position to assess which is the most appropriate vehicle for her self-expression.

I've thought of suggesting this one, Prayer, in the past, and, as with so many things, not got round to it. However, having been struck by the quiet restraint of the Whitman poem, and its relevance to post-September 11th emotions, I really feel that I should put it forward now. It's got the best of Duffy's direct simplicity, and it has an oblique angle on the theme of the sea as both symbol and backdrop. Prayer Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer utters itself.
