Latest News Archive CAROL ANN DUFFY A shopaholic becomes a shopping-mall; a dieting woman dwindles until she is blown away by a breeze - these are a couple of the strange transformations you'll find in Carol Ann Duffy's new collection Feminine Gospels. Dubbed a 'Superstar' poet, Carol Ann Duffy is launching Beverley's first Literature Festival at a preview event on Friday, October 4th at Beverley Art Gallery. Continuing her exploration of hidden female voices begun in her previous best-selling collection The World's Wife, Carol Ann rewrites the myths that shape our attitudes towards femininity. She does it with characteristic, sensuality, wit and artistry, in poetry that is both accessible to everyone and profoundly intelligent. Beverley's first literature festival featues over 40 events and will be running from Wednesday, October 9th through until Sunday, October 20th. Carol Ann will be reading, signing and answering questions at:

Stunningly original, haunting and memorable, the voices of Mrs Midas, Queen Kong, Mrs Lazarus, the Kray Sisters, and a huge cast of others startle with their wit, imagination, lyrical intuition and incisiveness. Carol Ann Duffy is a master at drawing on myth and history and subverting them in a wholly unexpected and surprising way. These poems have the pull of the past and the crack of the contemporary. Poems for a new century - vivid, funny, outrageous and entertaining - they will dazzle you, the wives of the past, the present, the future. Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955. She grew up in Stafford and then attended the University of Liverpool, where she received an honours degree in Philosophy in 1977. Her poetry publications have received many awards, including both the Forward Prize and the Whitbread Prize for Mean Time (Anvil, 1993). Her Selected Poems are published by Penguin and her poems for children by Faber, who have recently published Meeting Midnight. Carol Ann Duffy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She currently lives in Manchester, where she lectures in poetry for The Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University. Publisher Picador

‘Knowing Who We Are, and Finding a Way to Tell Ourselves’ carol AnnDuffy's Revision of Masculinist Representations of Female Identity. .

" ‘Knowing W ho W e A re, a nd F inding a W ay to T ell O urselves’: Carol Ann Duffy's R evision of M asculinist R epresentations of F emale I dentity. " Claire McEwen, University of Aberdeen 'In the world of British poetry', writes Katharine Viner, 'Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar.' She is certainly one of the most celebrated and widely read poets in Britain today. She is studied in Scottish and English schools and has received numerous accolades including the Whitbread Award and a CBE. She is also highly regarded by her peers: 'Carol Ann Duffy is one of the freshest and bravest talents to emerge in British poetry - any poetry - for years', writes Eavan Boland. As Boland notes, it is not simply the technical and lyrical qualities of Duffy's work that make it so innovative and influential; it is the courage in breaking taboos and traditions that mark out Duffy as one of the strongest voices in contemporary poetry. This courage is manifest in her complete rejection of traditional discourses and her ability and desire to revise masculinist representations of female identity. The notion of female identity as a construct created by masculine discourses, but accepted by all, is a recurring theme in Duffy's poetry.
