83. Alexandre Dumas: One For All
Brief overview of his life.
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian/issues96/jul96/dumas.html
The life and resurrection of Alexandre Dumas
The grandson of a Haitian slave, he became the most famous author in France; now, his rousing Romantic novels are enjoying renewed popularity
The action-packed novels of 19th-century French author Alexandre Dumas continue to intrigue millions of readers around the world, 150 years after their creation. The stories have been translated into almost a hundred languages, and the most famous, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo , have inspired more than 100 of the 200 films based on Dumas's works. Few people know, however, that the author was the grandson of a Haitian slave, or that Dumas's mulatto father rose rapidly through the ranks of the French Army to become a legendary general by the age of 31. Though the general died young, leaving his son without an inheritance, Dumas overcame poverty, the lack of formal education, and the constant wear and tear of 19th-century racism to become one of the world's most popular writers. By the time Dumas was 35, he had laid the foundations of bourgeois drama, helped stage a Romantic revolution in theater, and helped create a new kind of Romantic novel. Dumas's life sometimes seemed as action-packed as his novels; he participated in three revolutions, courted countless women and dueled when his honor was insulted. Luckily for his fans, the lavish chateau he built outside Paris, always open to starving artists, the families of mistresses, and even strangers, has recently been restored and opened to the public.

Alexandre Dumas' The D'Artagnan Romances
Set in 17th century France, Dumas portrays the life of a clever and courageous chevalier. Duels, enemies, kings, wars, politics, and assassins are only some of the many perils that await the daring Gascon and his friends on their journeys. But beyond this, the books are a piece of art reflecting the change in one's self through the generations, the search for honour while serving ambition, and the healing of painful wounds. More it shows the conflicts of everyday life: The mistakes, the consequences, the fears, and the hopes. Of all the books I have read, none has shown human nature in such an awe-inspiring life-like portrait. These books are a true masterpiece.

At last I finally have access to edit this website again! I am surprised at the many responses people have emailed me and I will soon start a FAQ as my own response. If you have come to this site for the first time, be my guest to look around. Alexandre Dumas was a writer who has enchanted readers through many centuries.
