HELL OF A GOOD NIGHT
By Mark Campbell
Published in The News and Star on 13/03/2003

STEPHEN Dunn is the devil . Of the Tasmanian variety, you understand. No horns or forked tail here, just a whirlwind of enthusiasm that whips all around him into a storm. There's a sense that the Carlisle music scene has finally found the size 12 boot it needed to give it a good kick into gear. Dunno is the star turn of Moment 99 , a company set up by city businessman and music fan Mike Lightfoot to give a helping hand to new talent in Cumbria and further afield. Last week's launch at Mood was testament to the impressively professional way the company is being run - the crowd for the night was more than treble the usual Wednesday night intake. Moment 99 are serious about what they are doing, and that has to be good news for Cumbrian wannabes. The line-up on launch night did little to hint at the potential to come - karaoke-style acts Phil Pawley and Carlisle duo So What paving the way for headliner Stephen Dunn But the place was buzzing with excitement at the potential of this brave new venture. The fact that Dunno has been reborn Kylie-style so long after his debut on the scene has given fresh hope to everyone.

Photo by Bernard C. Meyers Stephen Dunn:
Waking Up Poetry
by Mahlon Coop The standard formula for poetic greatness: Sometime in your late teens, you are struck by the muse and infused with auditory imagination beyond any right you should have to make sense at that young age. You start penning poems furiously. You are Shelley, publishing "Queen Mab" in your twenty-first year of life. You are T.S. Eliot, writing "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock," also at age twenty-one. You are Keats, producing "Ode to a Grecian Urn" at twenty-four, and the entire poetic canon that places you in every anthology of poetry is accomplished upon your death at a tender twenty-five years old. Or perhaps you are Stephen Dunn, not quite of the mold. In fact, Keats would have been dead and buried for two years before Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Dunn picked up a pen to begin, what is now, a long and distinguished career as one of America's foremost poets. "I started writing poetry seriously when I was around twenty-seven," he admits, placing him more in the Wallace Stevens-first-published-at-forty-four school of American poets.

Local Visitations by Stephen Dunn Published by WW Norton 80 pages, 2003 Celebration, Not Despair Reviewed by Gianmarc Manzione Opening with a playful and vivid poem, "Bowl Of Fruit" that, as always with Dunn, weaves its way confidently from bananas and oranges to yet another poignant and sincere statement on desire, Dunn's 12th book of poems revises familiar themes with an eye more towards celebration than despair. Dunn hints of a Blake gone fiendish in lines such as "But surely by now you've come to realize/there is no worm, only this bowl of fruit/made of words, only these seductions." For a second, at least, the famed "invisible worm" of Blake's "The Sick Rose" is kept at bay in favor of the world's fleeting but "seductive" pleasures; a rather drastic change of tone from the almost ceaseless morbidity that characterized Dunn's previous volume, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Different Hours.

Oscar Wilde Interview with Stephen Dunn
by Nat Hardy

Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Stephen Dunn is the author of eleven collections of poetry. His awards and grants include finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, Academy Award in Literature, and the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, and, most recently, the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his collection Different Hours . As part of LSU's Readers and Writers Program, Professor Dunn visited the LSU campus in November for a reading. At that time, I was fortunate to interview Stephen Dunn. The following interview is the result of our meeting.
Hardy: You have received a variety of literary prizes, most recently the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. What do awards and accolades mean to you, and do these honors inspire you to work harder?
Dunn: When you're young, awards may give you a sense of belonging in the larger community of poets. I think that the small ones I now and then received did that for me. The Pulitzer, of course, is another matter, a bigger matter. But awards never had anything to do with my work habits, and never motivated a single poem.

> Where I work
I'm studying for a DPhil in Biology at the Center For Computational Neuroscience and Robotics (CCNR). The CCNR is a joint venture between School of Biological Sciences and the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences and a development of the work of the Sussex Centre for Neuroscience, which is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
> Current Project
My DPhil (PhD) is in the area of computational neuroscience. I'm studying the rhythmic motor-pattern generating circuit underlying feeding behaviour in the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis , with prof. Paul Benjamin. More info here
> Academic Interests
I'm interested in the mechanisms involved in rhythmic pattern generation by neuronal circuits in simpler nervous systems, in particular in invertebrates. Like many others, I believe that these systems can only be understood when we take into account the combination of synaptic and intrinsic neuronal properties.

Three Poems Excerpted from Different Hours
Stephen Dunn Poet Stephen Dunn's most recent book, Different Hours (Norton, November, 2000), largely written at Yaddo, earned him the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and wide praise from critics as a "sensitive" and "graceful" writer. Different Hours is Mr. Dunn's eleventh collection of poetry. The poems in the book find their inspiration in the details of everyday life and often are set in southern New Jersey, where he makes his home. His subjects are found in daily life set against a dark emotional landscape. Previous collections include Loosestrife , a National Book Critics Circle finalist in 1996; New and Selected Poems, 1974-1994 Landscape at the End of the Century ; and Between Angels . He also is the author of Riffs and Reciprocities: Prose Pairs and Walking Light: Essays and Memoirs Mr. Dunn, who wrote "at least half of the poems in the book" at Yaddo, said

Title : Named Poet : Stephen Dunn Date : 23 Jun 2002 He'd spent his life ... Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq ssirugur@ Named Stephen Dunn I heard about Dunn through a friend and searched the Internet for some represenative poetry. I found two pieces, this and http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~richie/poetry/html/auth125.html and though the latter is definitely the better poem, this had some neat phrases ("whispers in the peripheries of your presence") that I liked more. I analysed this poem by removing the spacing and making a paragraph out of it. The abrupt breaks that verse-form allows ("oh the unfair and the accurate...") get laid out in starker relief that way and you wonder what value came out of calling this poetry, except the license to insert those choppy sentences. Or was the power of the important lines ("you've collected forever into a few small words") only apparent because I had seen it the proper format first? Still, Dunn's never been submitted to Minstrels and the writing is good enough that this merits as an unfair omission. The poem's quiet anguish for a sense of proper identity is a very fashionable question, especially in America, which is Dunn's provenance. I itch to dismiss this sentiment as trite but Dunn's artful arrangement of words stays my tongue. Sam.
