To Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkelt,
Eighteenth Baron Dunsany
by H. P. Lovecraft
As when the sun above a dusky wold,
Springs into sight and turns the gloom to gold,
Lights with his magic beams the dew-deck'd bow'r,
And wakes to life the gay responsive flow'r;
So now o'er realms where dark'ning dulness lies,
In solar state see shining PLUNKETT rise!
Monarch of Fancy! whose ethereal mind
Mounts fairy peaks, and leaves the throng behind;
Whose soul untainted bursts the bounds of space,
And leads to regions of supernal grace: Can any praise thee with too strong a tone, Who in this age of folly gleam'd alone? Thy quill, DUNSANY, with an art divine Recalls the gods to each deserted shrine; From mystic air a novel pantheon makes, And with new spirits fills the meads and brakes; With thee we wander thro' primeval bow'rs, For thou hast brought earth's childhood back, and ours! How leaps the soul, with sudden bliss increas'd, When led by thee to lands beyond the East! Sick of this sphere, in crime and conflict old, We yearn for wonders distant and untold;

Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett
A complex and fascinating character, and an important contributor to literature, Lord Dunsany was a versatile and creative writer, with works including fantasy, drama, poetry, science fiction, prose, autobiography ... He was familiar with many other key Irish literary figures (Yeats even issued a "Selection from the Writings of Lord Dunsany") and was also, among other things :
  • - a champion at chess (Irish national champion) and shooting
  • - an artist (drawings and figurines)
  • - a keen hunter
  • - reputedly, "the worst-dressed man in Ireland"
and a devoted family man and heir to a great old family tradition with a keen sense of heritage and duty.
Property in his care included Dunsany Castle (begun c. 1180 and seen by the family as part of the national heritage, to be maintained despite the many challenges which saw so many fine old buildings abandoned across Ireland and the U.K. in Lord Dunsany's lifetime), and its Estate, Dunstall Priory and Ivy Cottage in Shoreham, Kent, and Trim Castle, Ireland's largest castle (now in the care of the State and open to visit).
The Writer Lord
Lord Dunsany is cited as a major influence by many writers and artists and as an important figure in the development of fantastic literature by editors, academics and critics. His work formed part of the foundation of fantasy, along with that of Poe and Rider Haggard, and fed into later work such as that of Tolkien, Lewis and Lovecraft. The reference

Dunsany, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett 18th Baron (1878-1957) The ornate fantasy of Lord Dunsany (otherwise known as Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett; he was the eighteenth Baron Dunsany) was the product of a writing career of astonishing longevity, extending from the first decade of this century through 1948; he died in 1957. His literary works are highly poetic and imaginative. They began in 1905 with the mythological novel The Gods of Pegana. At Yeats's invitation he wrote many plays for the Abbey Theatre, including The Glittering Gate (1909) and The Laughter of the Gods (1919). His verse is contained in Fifty Poems (1930) and Mirage Water (1939). He also wrote an autobiographical series: Patches of Sunlight (1938), While the Sirens Slept (1944), The Sirens Wake (1945) and To Awaken Pegasus (1949). He achieved enormous popularity with his stories, novels, and plays (he was also an accomplished dramatist, perhaps the only major one in the literature of fantasy); this bejeweled style was of a piece with all the exotica of the East being discovered by the pre-World War I Intellectuals through the Ballets Russes and the ever-growing importing of art and ideas from India and the Moslem world. There are innumerable short stories, all the very essence of concise elegance. Typical are "The Hoard of the Gibbelins," in which it is told how the Gibbelins, who eat, "as is well known, nothing less good than man," protected their hoard of wealth from an epitomal Hero (and oh, what a devestating last sentence that story has!), and "The Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller, and the Doom Than Befell Him" (whose title alone should intrigue), the hero of which has an encounter with Hlo-hlo, the spider idol.

    Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett (1878 - 1957) arly in 1912, Ledwidge sent his principal notebook of poems to Lord Dunsany, by that time a leading author and playwriter who also influenced the young H.P. Lovecraft. Dunsany responded with an encouraging letter and invited the young poet. He became Ledwidge's mentor and showed how he could improve his poetry, teaching him all he knew about technique. Ledwidge was also givven the freedom of the castle's library, and spend several afternoons at Dunsany Castle. Dunsany wrote many letters in an effort to widen the market for his verse. In a letter he described how astonished he was "by the brillance of Ledwidge's eye that had looked at the fields of Meath and seen there all the simple birds and flowers, with a vividness that made those pages like a magnifying glass, through which one looked at familiar things seen thus for the first time." he illustrious man who introduced F.E.Ledwidge to the literary circle in Dublin and who became the poet's mentor, was Lord Dunsany, the 18th baron Dunsany. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was born on July 24, 1878 at Dunsany Castle, County Meath, Ireland. His uncle was Sir Horace Plunkett, the statesman who first proposed the Dominion structure for the creation of the Irish Free State. Lord Dunsany spent a great part of his youth at his mother's ancestral estate, Dunstall Priory, in Shoreham, Kent. He studied in the private schools Cheam School and Eton and finished his education at the military college at Sandhurst. Dunsany acceeded to his title of Baron in 1899 and married Lady Beatrice Villiers, youngest daughter of the 7th Earl of Jersey, in 1904. Their only son, Randal Plunkett was born in 1906.

    A variant created by Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, the 18th Baron Dunsany, whose family seat is in County Meath, northwest of Dublin. He fought in the Boer War and was wounded in WWI. An excellent chess player, Lord Dunsany was the Irish champion and held the great Capablanca to a draw in a simultaneous exhibition in London; his story, Three Sailors' Gambit, is considered one of the best chess stories ever written.
    In this variant, Black defends against a horde of White Pawns. White wins by checkmating, Black wins by capturing all of White's Pawns. White is slightly stronger, especially when pawn promotion becomes the goal: two Queens behind Black's lines and the game changes very quickly.
    What seems to be a bit of chess fun, quickly turns into a strategic nightmare. Black will start feeling lucky anytime he / she can maneuver a draw by blocking White's forward movement.

    BIO Lord Dunsany by Donald Clarke
    One of the members asked if we could give a little background on this author who so influenced young Howard P. Lovecraft. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany, was born on July 24, 1878 at Dunsany Castle, County Meath, Ireland. His uncle was the statesman Sir Horace Plunkett who first proposed the Dominion structure for the creation of the Irish Free State. Dunsany's youth was spent with his mother's ancestral estate, Dunstall Priory, Shoreham, Kent, England. He attended private schools: Cheam School and Eton and completed his education at the military college at Sandhurst. When the Boer War broke out in 1899, Dunsany fought in the Coldstream guards. That same year he acceded to his title of Baron. In 1904 Dunsany married Lady Beatrice Villiers, youngest daughter of the 7th Earl of Jersey, and has one son, the Hon. Randal Plunkett, born in 1906. When World War I broke out, Dunsany was a Captain of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. At a very tall six feet, four inches, he remarked that: "Our trenches were only six feet deep. I shall never fear 'publicity' again." He was wounded April 25, 1916 but survived the war to continue his illustrious career. With Dunsany's death in 1957, his son Randal became the 19th Baron Dunsany. In 1909, Dunsany wrote his first play, The Glittering Gate, at the request of W. B. Yeats. Its success at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin prompted Dunsany to produce a long list of plays which were successfully staged from Moscow and the United States. While his chief interests were in writing of plays and tales, he managed to add the 1929 Fifty Poems to his bibliography.
