Aboard the mystery train
Greil Marcus on the masks of Dylan and Harvey
BY JASON ANDERSON
Greil Marcus has always tried to find the big picture in rock 'n' roll. His career as a writer on music and American culture dates back to the early days of Rolling Stone . He has columns in Interview and Artforum , teaches at Berkeley and has written several books, including Mystery Train Lipstick Traces Dead Elvis and Invisible Republic Marcus explores his subjects as if they were detective stories. In his view, every significant cultural event contains a series of clues that depending on how you approach them suggest different motives, different conditions, different voices. But no matter what happens, the story stays in the dark. As an elder statesman of rock discourse, Marcus' first lecture in Toronto is a big event for wannabe scholars. The subject is a 1996 biennale in Florence in which the city's spaces were given a makeover by fashion designers, creating a unique collision of art and history. He also speaks on a panel called "Folk and Popular Culture: The Case of Dylan," with Rob Bowman, Kathleen Pirrie Adams and Bart Testa. Though Marcus' Invisible Republic , published last year, is primarily concerned with Dylan and his year in Woodstock, N.Y., with the Band making what became known as "the basement tapes," he's no authority. "I don't feel I'm any kind of expert on Bob Dylan," says Marcus in a recent phone interview. "I'm a fan, I'm fascinated by his work. I'm not interested in his private life. And a lot goes right by me. If a new Bob Dylan album comes out and I don't like it, I don't devote two weeks to studying it so I will understand it. If I don't like it, I don't listen to it.

[In which I introduce the Beatles to both Bob Dylan and the evil weed, something that makes me believe THE '60S WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THE SAME WITHOUT ME.] I. It's my experience that to smoke marijuana for the first time is to explore the limits of hilarity only to find that there are no limits. You laugh so hard that you get addicted to it. You want to laugh that hard again, so you smoke marijuana again. And again and again and again and again. I'm told that few ever really succeed in laughing that hard a second time, but I did. The two biggest laughs of my life were the first time I smoked marijuana and the first time the Beatles smoked it. In the Hotel Delmonico lobby, cops blocked our access to the elevators until No. 2 Beatles road manager Malcolm Evans, who was by that time getting to be a buddy of mine, descended to the lobby to escort us through the police lines. When we got to the floor of the Beatles' suite, the elevator doors opened on a hotel corridor crawling with still more cops plus there was an overflow from the suite next door to the Beatles. This overflow included reporters and photographers and radio and recording and TV personalities the likes of Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio, all of whom were being charmed by Beatles press officer Derek Taylor while awaiting their turns to meet the Beatles in the suite next door. I doubt the Beatles ever got around to meeting any of them on that particular night.

91. The Bob Dylan Biography Site - A Complete Biography Of The Founder Of Rock, Bob
A complete biography with discography.
http://indigo.ie/~ernie/
Welcome to the Bob Dylan Biography Site. Bob Dylan is one of my favourite artists, and I also have an interest in the internet so I decided to make a web site devoted to him. To try and sum up the career and achievements of a man like Bob Dylan within a few sentences is like trying to name all the session musicians Steely Dan went through during their career; impossible. Not only was he a man with a god-given talent for music and poetry, who was able to capture the mood of a particular era perfectly onto record, but he was the undoubted founder of rock and the pinnacle by which all other bands would and will forever attempt to climb. Born Robert Zimmerman, Bob Dylan arrived in New York city, fresh faced and ready to replicate his hero, Woody Guthrie. From these early country beginnings, he carved a path within music which took him to the bewildering heights of idol for a whole generation, speaking with that one, rasping, guttural voice the words for every teenager and youth of the times. As the mood in society and music changed, Dylan altered his perceptions of who he was and what he wanted to say, climbing majestically into the shoes of electrically charged travelling sage, bursting out songs of electrified anger one minute, and then murmuring quiet and haunting acoustic love songs the next. His work still continues to move and delight, as it has done for over thirty five years and will continue to do so until man finally turns music off for good.

  • "It was probably the most powerful time I've ever been on a live stage with anybody." (Jim Keltner)

But above all, there is the unquestionable talent of a naive and wise, young and old, insecure and determined song writer. Oxford town is the story of what Dylan saw when marching for civil rights in the south.
