62. Echegaray Y Eizaguirre, José
echegaray y eizaguirre, José April 19, 1832, Madrid, Spaind. Sept. 4, 1916, Madrid), mathematician, statesman, and the leading Spanish dramatist of the last quarter of the 19th century.

, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904. His first play, El libro talonario ("The Checkbook"), was not produced until 1874, when he was 42; but he had a prolific career, producing an average of two plays a year for the rest of his life. His early work is almost wholly Romantic, but, under the influence of Henrik Ibsen and others, he turned to thesis drama in his later work. He often displayed his thesis by use of a satiric reversal; in O locura o santidad Madman or Saint ), he showed that honesty is condemned as madness by society. In all his plays his manner is melodramatic. Though forgotten now, he achieved tremendous popularity in his day because of his fertile imagination, which he almost invariably used to compensate for his lack of dramatic force. His use of skillfully contrived stage effects, although disastrous in much of his own work, did much to revolutionize the scope of the Spanish theatre.

Benavente, Jacinto To Top
In addition to his plays, Benavente was an active journalist from 1908 to 1912, writing a weekly column for El Imparcial and also founded the Teatro de los Ni os (Children's theatre) in 1909. In 1912, Benavente was elected a member of the Real Academia Espa ñola. In World War I, he sided with the Germans and his plays became increasingly conservative which drew the ire and criticism of many of his literary contemporaries. Benavente withdrew from writing in response to the attacks from 1920-24, but resumed his trade upon the receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. Wizened by the prior experiences resulting from his unpopular views, Benavente intentionally withdrew from the public eye during the Civil War to Valencia where he quietly sustained his prolific literary pace. By his death in 1954, Benavente released an incredible 172 plays of somewhat uneven quality. His most popular works include the feminist Cartas de Mujeres (The Letters of Women, 1893), Nido Ajeno (Other Birds Nests, 1894), La Gobernadora (The Governor's Wife, 1901), Noche de Sabado (Saturday Night, 1903), Rosas de Oto

It is, certainly, a compendium of many arts, but all are sustained by the two primary ones - text and music.
Miguel Echegaray Eizaguirre An analysis of the relative weight and importance of one against the other would lead to a long debate, without any certainty of arriving at a definite conclusion. Many think that the music should be ranked above the text, and fewer would hold the contrary view. It is useful that each faction has brought its own criteria to bear, and we may hope that having read this article, we may have a little more data to enable us to clarify our ideas.
Let us first air some questions, that will help us reflect and focus on the topic:
Is it easier to recall a tune or a word? Is it easier to reflect a spiritual state or feeling through the music or the text? Are we conscious of the text attached to the melodies? Which were the librettists to hold and delight our forebears? Let these and other questions hang in the air and serve as points of reflection on the subject.
But what is the libretto? Putting it as simply and clearly as possible, it consists of a bundle of concepts, including the original idea, the plot, the narrative thread, the dialogue, the versification -and all this not just in the spoken but also in the sung part. What would the confrontation between Felipe and Mari Pepa in

The world's most distinguished - and sometimes controversial - prize for writers, the Nobel, is announced this month. James Campbell looks at its founder, a 'dynamite king' with a secret passion for poetry
    Saturday October 6, 2001
    The Guardian

Alfred Nobel left a cross-eyed legacy: he gave the world dynamite and he founded the Nobel Prizes. Nobel's talent for explosives combined smoothly with a head for business - by the year of his death, 1896, he had 93 dynamite factories - but the greater his success, the more it rankled his altruism. One commentator remarked that the clause concerning the peace prizes in Nobel's will, "challenged the humanitarian liberals among his personal friends to solve the problems his discoveries had created". Nobel was a melancholic, discontented man, with problems of his own. He never married or had successful relations with women. To a request in 1887 from his brother Ludwig for a contribution to a family history, he responded ironically: "Greatest sin: Does not worship Mammon. Important events in his life: None." As a postcript, Nobel suggested that he "should have been strangled by a humanitarian doctor when he made his screeching entrance into the world", an event which took place in Stockholm, in 1833.
