Umberto Eco's Multiple Name
[ The Pamphlet. The Conspiracy. The On-line Mystery. ] Is A Cult Of The Pendulum Born?
I s it licit to blame Umberto Eco if a group of young people has drawn inspiration from one of his novels, fostering chaos in the media and promoting blasphemous cults? Imagine that the things depicted in Foucault's Pendulum escape from literary fiction and infect sick brains. Fictional strategies continue working and mix reality and fantasy in an amoral disorder. In Italy and the rest of Europe, an obscure and delirious Internet youth movement called Luther Blissett are increasing their influence; they seem to have turned Foucault's Pendulum and Eco's philosophy into the Holy Writings of a "pop" "subversive" anti-media religion, a life-size role play with the tradition of hesoterism.. An anonymous pamphlet titled Umberto Eco's multiple name started to circulate recently. It aims at exposing the underhand dealings and connections with Italy's left-wing milieux which shaped the project, revealing the likely involvement of Eco himself in the scam and calling him a "master of deception", accomplice of the Intelligentia's hesoteric-gnostic activities. .

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Umberto Eco (1932-) - Pseudonym: Dedalus Italian literary critic, novelist, semiotician, who gained international fame with his intellectual detective story IL NOME DELLA ROSA (1980, The Name of the Rose), a book about books. It extended the use of semiotics to fiction, and combined various genres, literary theory, mediaeval studies, mystery, and biblical exegesis. As a semiotician Eco is known for his contribution to the theoretical study of signs encompassing all cultural phenomena. Much of his study, including A Theory of Semiotics (1976), has been on the development of a methodology of communication. (from Il nome della rosa Umberto Eco was born in Alessandria. He received a doctoral degree from the University of Turin in 1954 at the age of 22. His thesis dealt with the early philosopher and religious thinker St. Thomas Aquinas. From 1954 to 1959 he worked in Milan as a cultural editor for RAI, Italian Radio-Television, also lecturing at the University of Turin (1956-64). In 1958-59 Eco served in the army. He was a university teacher in Milan (1964-65) and Florence (1965-69). From 1969 to 1971 he was a teacher at Milan Polytechnic. At the early age of 39 Eco was appointed professor of semiotics at Bologna University in the north of Italy.

Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco is known to a world-wide audience for his two novels, The Name of the Rose , and Foucault's Pendulum . Both works allude to aspects of past and present theories of signs, as well as to a vast array of scholarly (those of the Middle Ages in particular) and other texts (Sherlock Holmes in the Name of the Rose , and the Corpus Hermeticum in Foucault's Pendulum Eco was born in 1932 in Piedmont, Italy. Before becoming a semiotician, he studied philosophy specialising in the philosophical and aesthetic theories of the Middle Ages. His thesis at the University of Turin on the aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas was published in 1956 when he was 24. Three years later, Eco contributed a chapter called 'Sviluppo dell'estetica medievale' ('The development of Medieval aesthetics') to a four-volume handbook on the history of aesthetics. In 1986, the lengthy chapter came in an English translation under the title of Art and Beauty in the Middle Ages . This erudition, we have noted, has been put to good effect in Eco's fiction, but does , it have any real connection with his work in semiotics? One can answer in the affirmative here for two reasons. First, as Todorov and others have shown, the age of Thomas Aquinas is also a chapter in the history of sign theory. The Aristotle who so influenced the 'Angelic Doctor' has also left his mark, Eco recognises, on more contemporary semiotics - such as in the theory of metaphor .3 Second, as a medievalist, Eco became fascinated by the writings of James Joyce where one finds liberal references to Aquinas, Aristotle, Dante, Medieval bestiaries, and rhetoric.

UMBERTO ECO
Semiotician and artist
by
Sia C. Durocher "I am what the anthropologists call a polychronic personality. If I don't have many things to do, I am lost. Every day I do the less urgent task this gives me a sense of adultery." Read this before citing this article! Back to biography list The year 1932 was a turbulent time for Italians and Europe overall. Mussolini had a stranglehold on Italian society while Hitler and Franco reigned in Germany and Spain. Italian artists were careful not to write or create anything subversive and workers struggled in spite of the meager assistance from the fascist cooperatives created to protect their rights. On January 5 Umberto Eco took his first breaths of Italian air. He was born in the small town of Alessandria in the province of Piedmont; a town involved in the manufacturing business dominated by the Borsalino hat company. Piedmont is a mountainous area that has had more influence from the French culture than that of Italy. Regarding this cultural influence on his writing and his perspective on the Piedmont area Eco states the following: The Piedmontese are the least Italian of the Italians not passionate, not excited, no fire. There is a strong French influence, a mountain culture. Remember that Piedmont is the only part of Italy that remained independent for the last 1,000 years. Certain elements remain as the basis of my world vision: a skepticism and an aversion to rhetoric. Never to exaggerate, never to make bombastic assertions. (Eberstadt)
