Abstract
Clyde Edgerton, writer and educator of Durham County, N.C. Literary material includes annotated and revised drafts, galleys, notes, and correspondence relating to Edgerton's novels Raney Walking Across Egypt The Floatplane Notebooks Killer Diller In Memory of Junior Redeye: A Western , and Where Trouble Sleeps , and his short stories and essays, as well as his notebooks and journals. Personal material includes correspondence with family members, friends, and military personnel during Edgerton's service, 1966-1971, as an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam War. There are also a few letters from his uncle Clem R. Warren as a soldier in World War I. Also included is correspondence with Edgerton's publisher Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, his editor Shannon Ravenel, agents, other literary figures, and fans. Among Edgerton's literary correspondents are Rick Bass, Allan Gurganus, Michael McFee, Lee Smith, Louis Rubin, and Doug Marlette. Also included are materials relating to the controversy surrounding Edgerton's departure from the teaching staff of Campbell University over objections to the portrayal of Free Will Baptists in

Der erste Test von Alberts Flugzeug ist eine Katastrophe. Ein Motor fällt aus, das Seitenruder klemmt, die Maschine rast außer Kontrolle in Kreisen über den See und bohrt sich schließlich in die Uferböschung. Albert trägt ein: «Alle Komponenten arbeiten zufriedenstellend.»

I was looking for Edgerton's book Walking Across Egypt when I ran across Raney and decided to give it a try. I read it one Sunday afternoon, and chuckled over it all the next day. I think I quoted half the book to my sister Lori. (And then she read it and quoted it back to me!) It's the story of a "modern" Southern woman who is a member of the Free Will Baptist church and her marriage to a liberal well educated, Episcopalian man named Charles. After their marriage they reside in Listre, NC not too far from her parents. (Many of Edgerton's books take place in Listre.) Between the comic scenes, Edgerton makes the point that marriages are marriages of two families and not just two people and he succeeds marvelously in showing the compromises. I have a really hard time believing that this book was written by a man, Raney's voice just seems too true. Reviewed

Humped way over and all fell in the way she is, and weighing less than ninety pounds, her arms look longer than a broom. To see where she's going she has to look up through her eyebrows. "Is that my car?" she says. "Yes ma'am. I washed it." "Well, it looks good." She's wearing a striped jacked, Hawaiian shirt, tan slacks, gold slippers, silver wig, and a couple of pounds of make-up. "I'll let you try to drive it after we eat," I tell her, knowing damn well she ain't able to drive. I've been putting it offletting her practice her driving, that isby driving my truck when I take her to lunch instead of her car. She keeps asking me when she can practice her driving and I keep putting it off. Because for one thing, as far as when she's going to get out of this place, I don't think it's going to happen. And she won't be able to drive again in any case, and it's my job to tell her. I'm it. It's one of the most worrisome things in my life because I'm about all she's got left, as far as people. Everything is pretty much up to me. But today we've got her car, and after I let her try to drive after lunch, in the mall parking lot there at Pickadilly's, for just a minute or two, I'm going to tell her she can't drive any more. It's past time to just break the news.

Burgess, Anthony A DEAD MAN IN DEPTFORD
The late Burgess goes out like Ted Williams with a homer in his last at-bat in this wonderful novel centered in the glorious, vicious, tawdry Elizabethan world (and, mostly, underworld). The dead man in question is, of course, Christopher Marlowe. For background reading and an excellent non-fiction treatment of the suspicious life and death of the brilliant playwright, see last year's The Reckoning , by Charles Nicholl.
