    Order Form "Angels" They have little use. They are best as objects of torment.
    No government cares what you do with them.
    Like birds, and yet so human . . .
    They mate by briefly looking at the other.
    Their eggs are like white jellybeans.
    Sometimes they have been said to inspire a man
    to do more with his life than he might have.
    But what is there for a man to do with his life? . . . They burn beautifully with a blue flame. When they cry out it is like the screech of a tiny hinge;
    the cry of a bat. No one hears it . . . The Tormented Mirror
    Russell Edson "[Edson's] prose poems are brief glimpses into a visionary world with haunting analogies to our own. The tone ranges from weird humor through the poignant and melancholy to the genuinely scary. The images are hard and clear." -Library Journal " The Tormented Mirror confirms Edson's artistry with the prose poem as a form; he continues to maintain a precarious balance between unfettered imagination and the observable world, both of which are often darker than they seem." -ForeWord "Edson is the godfather of the prose poem in America. His work sets a standard for prose poetry that few other practitioners can meet. An Edson prose poem proceeds like a joke, beginning with an odd situation . . . developing with skewed logic, and concluding with some kind of surprise. But Edson's jokes are dreamier than any stand-up comic's, full of sexual and scatological twists and weird metamorphoses. They can elicit laughter, disgust, or both simultaneously, and they defy easy interpretation, for they lack overt symbolism. They are disturbing but often, especially in this book, as dazzling as a good Dali or De Chirico painting."-

    Of course, with a magazine entitled Sycamore Review you're going to get a lot of "Good Doggie" poems. Also, poetry has long been "good doggie" stuff. It's an inbred style from the centuries. After all, a poem ain't no good unless it's pretty and calm and not very understandable. Poetry, they think, is supposed to be a quiet yawn. And it is. Nobody gets excited about poetry. Nobody can. Well.... sure, Charles Bukowski The titles in the index for this issue are hypertext links to the works themselves. The author names in the index and in the text are links to the contributor's note as it stood at the time of the issue's publication. Currently, we only plan to produce on-line editions of issues that go out of print.

    The Amalgamation of Locals 47 and 767
    by Marl Young
    (Reprinted from Article that appeared in The Overture in December 1988) In late 1950 while attending UCLA, I met a graduate student and professional singer by the name of Estelle Edson. The subject of her graduate thesis was "The Negro in Radio." Ironically, she discovered that there were scarcely any blacks working in the broadcast industry in any capacity. Because I was a musician, she felt that I would have some insight as to the role of the black musician in the broadcast industry. As far as I knew, there were no blacks working regularly in the industry, especially on the networks – ABC, CBS and NBC. She asked me if the fact that the Musicians Unions were segregated contributed to the scarcity of blacks in the industry. It certainly could have been a contributing factor in that all the contracts for employment of musicians in the broadcast and motion picture studios were negotiated by the then all-white union, Local 47. The black union, Local 767 merely adopted the scales negotiated by Local 47, if and when a black musician got a studio call. Prior to this, meetings of black and white musicians were held

    Fish out of Water
    Russell Edson and Ana Castillo triumphantly lift poetry out of its natural element. The Tunnel: Selected Poems , by Russell Edson (Oberlin College Press). Paper, $16.95. I Ask the Impossible , by Ana Castillo (Anchor Books). Paper, $12. There is a tiny window of time, on the river, dusk, at the end of the day, when both bird and fish go after the same fly. I could build this metaphor either way, but let's say the bird is a novelist, riding the currents of plot and scene as it spots and then swoops down upon its prey. Our fish, dear fish, will be a poetswimming the depths of lyric meditation, or confession, or even the depths of joy, whatever, then rising, rising, always hungry, intent on breaking the surface to have its way. The fly, of course, is what they want, what everyone wants: a human moment. I suppose there are other animals that want the fly alsodancers, sculptors, painters, composersbut that would make this all too complicated. Bird gets the fly in its bird way. Fish gets the fly in its fish way. Enough said, right? Maybe not. There's this fish: He wants the fly but he doesn't want it in the fish way. He throws himself into the air, shimmery and breathless, hovering above the only atmosphere he knows will love him, if only for the sheer, desperate, temporary thrill of freedom from the water's grasp, and in that weightless click of time between the rise and fall, the leap and heft and tumbling back, makes a place for himself in pearly light on the wrong side of the water line. This fish is pretty cool, right? Now imagine what would be possible if this fish could fly.
